SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The South Park neighborhood has a new ornament for the holiday season, which residents hope will become a permanent addition. The South Park Business Group recently installed a new sign of the community's name on top of a building at the end of Fern Street."It gives people a little more of a talking point," says Tanya McAnear, who owns Bad Madge and Company nearby. "Having a branded neighborhood helps when you're on social media."The sign is part of this year's Holiday Walkabout Luminaria event on December 7. But people in the neighborhood hope the business group keeps it up as a permanent addition."I'd like to see it stay for a long time," says Wayne Prunkard, who has lived in South Park for 20 years. "It gives an atmosphere to the neighborhood, and I really like it."People in South Park have been clamoring for a sign like this for years, one that can help identify the area in the same way signs in University Heights, Normal Park, North Park, Hillcrest, Kensington, Barrio Logan, and Gaslamp do.The South Park Business Group paid for the sign. Organizers say they're looking into a way to make it permanent."It makes you stand out. It makes you unique," says Grace Gerber, the manager of Native Poppy. "It draws people's eyes in, and that would be huge for us."The lights on the sign will turn on for the first time at 5:30 pm on Saturday, December 7. 1392

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — This week, San Diego County will learn whether its coronavirus case rate forces the region to move into California's restrictive purple tier of reopening. If the county is forced to move into the most restrictive tier, several business types will have to enact more stringent capacity limits or move operations outdoors only:Retail stores at 25% capacity indoors,Restaurants can have outdoor dining only,Shopping centers at 25% capacity with closed common areas and a closed food court,Personal care businesses can have outdoor operations after working indoors with modifications.Museums, zoos, and aquariums can operate outdoors only,Places of worship and movie theaters can be outdoors only,Gyms and fitness centers can operate outdoors onlyLast month, California moved personal care services, like nail salons, tattoo parlors, and skin care services, into the same category as hair salons and barbershops. These businesses can operate indoors with modifications in any tier.RELATED:San Diego businesses feel the squeeze between coronavirus and winter weatherIf San Diego County falls to purple tier, some schools may delay reopeningMany San Diego business owners fear move to dreaded purple tierLast week, county public health officials reported an unadjusted case rate of 8.7 cases per 100,000 people, and an adjusted 7.4 case rate. County spokesman Michael Workman said if the region does fall into the purple tier, the new restrictions would take effect 12:01 a.m. Saturday. This time, however, they would not be accompanied by an additional round of federal stimulus money to help small businesses make it through. "It's sustainable for a few months at time, but if you start talking about 12 to 18 months of this you're going to see hundreds and hundreds of restaurants and bars go out of business," said Steve Billings, owner of North Park's Original 40 Brewing Company. Ben Clevenger, President of the San Diego County chapter of the California Restaurant Association, says they are writing a letter asking local and state officials for a one-week extension in hopes the COVID-19 metrics improve. As for their members, he says it's up for each restaurant owner to decide what to do."We keep advising them to do safe social distancing, safe operation practices," Clevenger said. "But at the end of the day, it's up to them, the individual businesses, whether to they're going to stay open or close and follow the guidelines. I think right now, there's a lot of restaurants in survival mode, and they don't have a choice but to stay open and hope for the best."The purple tier also requires a case rate of 7.0 or more and testing positivity of 8% or more. The county's testing positivity has largely sat at 3% to 3.5% for the last four weeks, which falls within the positivity metric for the orange tier of reopening. If the county falls into the purple tier, it will have to meet red tier criteria for two consecutive weeks before it can move forward, according to the state. 3008

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego Fertility Center will be the first in the nation to deploy new robotic technology that will help store, track and maintain frozen embryos for In-Vitro Fertilization. The TMRW Robot will be in use by next month at the center in Carmel Valley. It will take 17,000 measurements every day to make sure the embryos are kept in prime conditions. It also codes each embryo and egg with a specific Radio Frequency ID to make sure scientists can track each one."There needs to be this level of trust between the mother and father and the caretakers of their embryos," says Dr. Michael Kettel with the SDFC. "I think this goes one step further in building that trust."Since IVF treatment began, most of the storage and measurements taken on embryos has been done by hand, in tanks that hold up to 1,000 samples. The TMRW Robot will have room for nearly 20,000 embryos and make the process fully automatic. Doctors say that will remove any possibility of human error."We can't make a mistake," says SDFC Laboratory Director Bill Venier. "This machine will not let us make a mistake."IVF mistakes have been in the news recently as families have filed lawsuits over embryos being given to the wrong parents. Venier says the TMRW Robot will all but eliminate the chance of that happening."We'll have 24/7, 365 (monitoring of) 17,000 data points to let us know everything is safe and is not going to be affected whatsoever," he says. RELATED: Mother gives birth to other couples' babies because of IVF mix upThe technological leap forward was necessary as IVF pregnancies become more common. The CDC says 21 million people will use some kind of IVF method or storage by 2025. It also estimates that there will be 200-300 million babies born through IVF by the year 2100. RELATED: IVF births expected to skyrocket this century"I am certain you cannot go to a kindergarten class in San Diego where one of those children wasn't born through an IVF or some sort of fertility procedure," says Dr. Kettel. For the San Diego Fertility Center, the new robot means they'll be at the forefront of the future of the industry. 2138

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The twists and turns of the coronavirus pandemic have been especially hard on Little Italy's Civico 1845 restaurant."We're counting pennies every day," owner Dario Gallo says. Gallo couldn't get a stimulus Paycheck Protection Program loan and now, it's illegal for him to have guests eat indoors."There's been the moment, earlier in the previous month where things were changing day after day with new regulations," Gallo says. Like all restaurants in the county, Gallo had to figure out how to survive. To do that, he's making full use of the space outside his India Street restaurant, both in the piazza to the side of the building and on the street in what's called a Parklet. He's back up to 85% capacity."We are of course fighting, day after day after day," Gallo said. The city says it's doing all it can to make it easy for restaurants and businesses to move outside, even waving fees for a lot of temporary parklet permits and turning them fast. Still, there are more applications coming. The city said Thursday nearly 250 businesses have the green light to move outside, with another 33 permits in the queue.Marco Polo Cortes, a hospitality consultant who helps businesses apply, including Civico 1845, says he's never been busier."This is their lifeblood. They are either out on the parklet, on the sidewalk, or not open for business," Cortes says. Cortes says building parklets can cost a few hundred to a couple thousand, but he also says restaurants can earn ,000 to ,000 in revenue from them in a single day.The city says many permits are free of charge, however, more complicated proposals may require fees. 1653
