(KGTV) -- The Oceanside Police Department told residents not to panic after the department received several calls about a strong smell.According to authorities, the smell is outgassing from the ocean and is non-toxic.Ocean outgassing happens when the ocean releases gasses that were trapped or dissolved.A similar incident was reported in La Jolla earlier this year. On Friday afternoon, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention expanded it's warning to consumers to cover all types of romaine lettuce, now including whole heads and hearts of romaine lettuce, in addition to chopped romaine and salads and salad mixes containing romaine.Romaine lettuce has been linked to the growing number of people hospitalized due to a multistate E. coli outbreak. 53 people have been infected with the outbreak strain of E. coli in 16 states since March 13, the CDC said. Thirty-one of those ill have been hospitalized. Five of them developed a type of kidney failure associated with an E. coli illness called hemolytic uremic syndrome, which can be life-threatening. No deaths have been reported.The following steps were suggested by the CDC Friday: 813

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - The City of Oceanside is taking control of its water destiny, investing in a facility to purify recycled water from homes.“It’s not being used, it’s really a waste. A lot of that water is going out to the ocean and it’s really a precious resource," said Cari Dale, Water Utilities Director for the city. This Fall they'll break ground on the Pure Water Oceanside facility, which will sit right next to the San Luis Rey Water Reclamation Facility.The process uses state-of-the-art water purification steps that replicate and accelerate nature's natural recycling process. The facility will create between 3 and 5 million gallons per day of high-quality drinking water for the Oceanside community.Currently, the city gets most of its water from outside sources, which is costly and subject to drought and environmental disasters.Pure Water Oceanside will be able to provide 30 percent of the city's water supply.“It’s important because it’s controlling our own destiny, we’re really reusing something that would otherwise would be thrown away, so really it’s being a good environmental steward," said Dale.Orange County has been using a similar system for years.Funding for the million project will come from the city, as well as federal and state grants. Dale says residents will also see small increases in their bills.They hope to have the new facility running by the end of 2021. OAKLAND, Calif. -- The United States Geological Survey is reporting that an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 3.5 has struck just outside of Oakland. The earthquake struck at 7:18 p.m. just two miles outside of Oakland Monday. No damage or injuries are being reported. The USGS originally reported that the earthquake was a 3.8 magnitude, then a 3.6. The quake was eventually downgraded to a 3.5.  439

On Monday, McDonald's announced that they are developing a new plant-based burger, which they've coined the McPlant.They also are launching a new Crispy Chicken Sandwich in early 2021.In a blog post, the company said it would be testing a meat-free burger in several markets next year. They tried the plant-based burger in select restaurants in Canada last year."There are other plant-based burgers out there, but the McPlant delivers our iconic taste in a sink-your-teeth-in (and wipe-your-mouth) kind of sandwich," the fast-food chain said in the blog post. "It's made with a juicy, plant-based patty and served on a warm, sesame seed bun with all the classic toppings."The new sandwich announcements come as part of the company's current growth strategy called "Accelerating the Arches," which is an effort to boost sales.The plan includes new packaging, a loyalty program called "MyMcDonald's," and providing a fast, comfortable experience for our customers with a "powerful digital experience."Through "MyMcDonald's," customers will receive special offers.
