BEIJING, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao held talks last Friday with top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Kim Jong Il in Changchun, capital city of northeast China' s Jilin Province.Kim, general secretary of the Worker' s Party of Korea (WPK) and chairman of the DPRK National Defense Commission, paid an unofficial visit to China from August 26 to 30 at the invitation of Hu, also general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC).Hu said that at present, China and the DPRK are increasing vigorous exchange and cooperation in various fields, among various departments and between provinces along the borders. The two sides have maintained close communication and coordination on issues of the Korean Peninsula and the region.Hu said China is ready to work with the DPRK to carefully safeguard and develop friendly and cooperative relations between the two countries.During the talks, Hu put forward three proposals for further strengthening relations between the CPC and the WPK and between the two countries.Firstly, the two sides should maintain high-level contact, which is of great significance to continuously pushing forward the development of the China-DPRK links. Leaders of the two sides should continue to maintain regular communication in various forms.Secondly, the two sides should advance trade and economic cooperation. Expanding and deepening mutually beneficial and win-win trade and economic cooperation is in the basic interests of the two peoples. China is ready to grow trade and economic cooperation on the principles of government guidance with enterprises playing a major role, market operation, and mutual benefits for win-win results.Thirdly, the two sides should strengthen strategic communication. MANILA, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- The Philippine government will provide the Chinese government a copy of the final report on the Aug. 23 hostage-taking incident before it divulges the findings to the public, the presidential palace said on Friday night.Secretary Ricky Carandang of the Presidential Communications Development and Strategic Planning Office made the statement after President Aquino met with the Incident Investigation and Review Committee (IIRC) led by Justice Secretary Leila de Lima, following the submission of the final report on the incident that killed eight Hong Kong nationals."We have to communicate this to Beijing first before we make it public," Carandang said, adding that the presidential palace only "wants to be careful" in handling the sensitive matter.He said that the high-level Philippine delegation will still go to Beijing and Hong Kong to formally present the report to their leaders but this will have to be done after the President's working visit to the United States.The President and his delegation to the United States will depart on Monday night and will return on Sept. 28.

BEIJING, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- China and South Africa pledged Friday to step up legislative cooperation to cement the bilateral strategic partnership.The pledge came out of the meeting between Chinese President Hu Jintao and Speaker of the National Assembly of South Africa Max Sisulu in Beijing.Hu said growing China-South Africa relations require stronger collaboration between the legislatures of the two countries.Hu hoped the two legislatures could launch their regular exchange mechanism at an appropriate time and work to improve such mechanism.Sisulu said the the National Assembly of South Africa hoped to make a new contribution to boosting cooperation between the two countries.On China-South Africa relations, Hu said bilateral relations have "reaped good harvests" since the two countries forged diplomatic ties in 1998.Sisulu agreed with Hu's comments, saying China's remarkable progress contributes to world peace and development and inspires South Africa and other African countries.Also Friday, Wu Bangguo, chairman of China's National People's Congress(NPC) Standing Committee, held hour-long talks with Sisulu at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.Wu said the NPC and the National Assembly of South Africa have a good foundation for cooperation, and urged the two legislatures to maintain exchanges at a high level.While calling for the two legislatures to work more closely in regional and international legislative organizations, Wu said a regular exchange mechanism should be launched as early as possible so as to improve ties between the legislatures of the two countries.Sisulu said the National Assembly of South Africa and the NPC of China should strengthen bilateral exchanges and seek closer cooperation in multilateral legislative organizations.As South Africa is a big country in Africa and an important emerging economy, China hopes to communicate more and coordinate with South Africa over Sino-African cooperation so as to advance China-Africa relations and South-South cooperation, Wu said.The visit to China was Sisulu's first since he was elected to the position of speaker of the National Assembly of South Africa in May 2009.Apart from Beijing, Sisulu will also visit the Three Gorges Dam, the world's largest water control project, on the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, China's longest.

GUANGZHOU, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) - Flooding has killed at least 13 people and left 34 missing in south China's Guangdong Province on Tuesday, local authorities said.Heavy rains caused by typhoon Fanabi battered many parts of Guangdong Tuesday.Further, a dam at the Xinyi Yinyan Tin Mine, owned by Zijin Mining Group Co. in Qianbai Township of Xinyi City, collapsed after being hit by a landslide, leaving five dead, six missing and seven injured, Xinxi city government officials said.Landslides and floods also killed three, buried 12 and left three others missing in Rupingtang Township, it said.The disasters toppled 346 houses and also has caused economic losses of 460 million yuan (68.5 million U.S. dollars) in Xinyi.In Yangchun City, flooding is reported to have killed three, left eight missing and forced the evacuation of 18,930 villagers. .Shuangjiao Township in Yangchun received 548.5 mm of rainfall in seven hours through 8 a.m. Tuesday, the largest rainfall in 58 years, according to authorities.Flood also killed two people and left five missing in Gaozhou City.
