Four people have died after they were swallowed up by a massive sinkhole in a Chinese city, despite desperate rescue efforts to save them.According to state media, the sinkhole opened up around 2:30 p.m. Sunday in Dazhou, Sichuan province. Dramatic video from the scene showed people suddenly plunging through the pavement as it collapsed beneath them.Two victims died after being pulled from the pit and rushed to a hospital, state media said. Former prisoners are helping former prisoners break in to college courses.  The Urban Scholars Union is a relatively new organization created by ex-cons for ex-cons looking to better themselves through education. USU’s President Cesar Garcia said they started 18 months ago at San Diego City College to help “justice impacted” students succeed. “[We want to] empower them and motivate them to be productive members of society,” said Garcia. “We’re not monsters that they make us out to feel and make us out to be,” said San Diego City College student Ryan Rising. “We’re humans that made poor choices.” Rising spent 15 years behind bars for carjacking and attempted extortion but will matriculate to Cal Berkley on a scholarship after earning his Associate’s at City.“I’m super proud of myself,” he said. Garcia, who served seven years for a list of crimes, said the USU provides a space for former prisoners to get help, guidance, and support. The organization recently expanded to Southwestern College and is working on helping students at Mesa and Grossmont Colleges. USU also recently received its largest donation to date.  Current prisoners at Donovan Correctional in Otay Mesa donated ,000 to USU for scholarships and grants for former prisoners. “It just goes to show you how we do look out for each other,” said Garcia. “We just need go out and advocate to erase all these stigmas,” said Rising. 1470

FORT MITCHELL, Ala. – A 5-year-old boy was struck and killed by a vehicle on a busy Alabama highway Sunday night after reportedly being forced out of a car as punishment.Russell County Sheriff Heath Taylor told WTVM that the boy, Austin Birdseye, was riding in the car with his mother’s boyfriend, 35-year-old Bryan Starr, when the child began “being unruly.”Taylor told CBS News that Starr had taken the boy on a drive that night to “calm him down” after he acted up at home.During the drive, Taylor says Starr pulled over, told Birdseye to get out of the vehicle and then lost sight of him in the rain. The boy ended up wandering onto Highway 165 in Fort Mitchell, where he was fatally hit, according to the sheriff.Starr was arrested on a murder charge, but he has since bonded out of jail, CBS reports. If convicted, he could reportedly face 20 years to life in prison.Taylor believes Starr made a horrible decision. He said he understands trying to discipline the child, but the way Starr did it was “mind-boggling.” He told CBS that it serves as a lesson to parents.“There's way to discipline your child, but we have to do it the right way and we can't do it in a way that's going to potentially bring harm," Taylor said.Starr is in the military, stationed at Fort Benning. FORT MYERS, Fla. -- A driver narrowly missed hitting a deputy on a traffic stop Tuesday, instead rolling over their vehicle in an effort to avoid hitting him.The whole crash was caught on dash cam video.On Tuesday afternoon, Eddy Ramos was driving when the rollover happened in front of him.His video shows an SUV in the northbound lanes swerve past the deputy who was stopped on the right shoulder.  The SUV veered left and rolled over across the median, coming to a stop upside down in the southbound lanes.Thankfully the SUV's driver appeared to be uninjured as she climbed out the driver side window.No word on whether any charges were filed. 659
