BEIJING, March 7 (Xinhua) -- Drought had affected 61.31 million Mu (4.09 million hectares) of farmland in southwestern China as of March 5, according to the latest figure from the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA).About half of the affected, or 32.95 million Mu (2.20 million hectares), was seriously damaged, according to the MOA.The affected acreage was in Yunnan Province, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Guizhou Province, Sichuan Province and Chongqing Municipality.The areas contributed to about 16 percent of the country's annual grain output, and thus were important to the country's overall grain output, according to the MOA.

"The second plane, which was delayed due to limited capacity of the Haitian airport, will arrive on Jan. 26."Since Jan. 13, the 60-member emergency rescue team sent by the Chinese government has fully engaged in disaster relief in the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince, he said. "The team has carried out effective search and rescue operations at the headquarters of MINUSTAH (the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti), the prime minister's palace and other places, with a number of bodies found, including those of Special Representative Hedi Annabi of MINUSTAH and other UN staff.""The medical team of the Chinese rescue team are providing medical support for several hundred local people everyday," he said. BEIJING, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- China denied on Thursday that its economic and trade exchanges with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) has violated a United Nations (UN) resolution.At a regular press conference, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang was asked to comment on a report by Yonhap news of the Republic of Korea quoted by China Daily saying Pyongyang announced two islets adjacent to China's northernmost port city Dandong would be developed by Chinese enterprises as a free trade area."This project is purely normal economic and trade contact between the two countries. It does not go against the UN relevant resolution of sanction on the DPRK," he said.The UN Security Council last June adopted a resolution imposing tougher sanctions on the DPRK, including a tighter arms embargo and new financial restrictions, after the DPRK announced a successful nuclear test on May 25, the second since 2006.The resolution also underlined that "measures imposed by this resolution are not intended to have adverse humanitarian consequences for the civilian population of the DPRK."
