SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Two San Diego families were devastated when their dogs disappeared. After days of searching, they found out their dogs were adopted by other families at local shelters. “I would give anything to have him back,” says Valeria Mega?a. The Spring Valley family’s poodle mix, Cookie, has been missing since Halloween. “It’s been really hard. Life is not the same without him.”After searching day and night, the family got word Cookie was placed at the El Cajon Animal Shelter. When Mega?a checked, she was told Cookie had already been adopted. A similar situation happened to a family in City Heights. Nora Avila says she was out of town when her dog Mocha, who was staying with a neighbor, got out. By the time she made it to the San Diego Humane Society, he had already been adopted. “We pleaded with them to let the family know… that we loved him. He was never abandoned,” says Avila. The El Cajon Animal Shelter and the San Diego Humane Society have holding periods of four days for animals with no identification. Cookie and Mocha were not microchipped. “One in three pets in their lifetime is missing at some point. That’s why for us again, it is so important that people microchip their pets,” says Jennifer Brehler, with the San Diego Humane Society. Both shelters told 10News they notified the adopters but the new families have decided to not return the animals. SAN DIEO (KGTV) - Parole agents checked on child sex offenders Thursday night to ensure they were in compliance, as part of the 26th Annual Operation Boo.10News rode along with California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation Agents who went knocking on 7 doors Halloween night."The gates were closed, the lights were turned off, they kind of know what is expected of them," Parole Agent Matthew Holmes said.Some of the stops took us to National City, City Heights, even a marina where a house boat was docked."Most of the time they're compliant, occasionally somebody has to go back to jail, but we just try to hold them accountable for their conditions," Holmes said.That means no alcohol, drugs, weapons, or pornography.Thursday night everyone checked out.One parolee told 10News he's excited to take the next step after his release, "I feel fantastic, the program is great, State Parole is great. It's definitely worth it. I think all this tax payers expense, they're getting their money's worth, I'll tell you that."Operation Boo is just a small part of agents' role of checking in on parolees. Wednesday five parolees were arrested for being out of compliance. 1181

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A California state audit found that the University of California wrongly admitted at least 64 wealthy students over the past six years as "favors to donors, family, and friends."California State Auditor Elaine Howle also found in the audit released Tuesday that campus staff falsely designated 22 of the applicants as student-athlete recruits because of donations from or as favors to well-connected families.The University of California, Berkeley, admitted 42 less-qualified applicants based on connections to staff, leadership, and donors.The audit was conducted in response to the national college admissions scandal that embroiled prestigious universities around the country, athletic coaches and dozens of wealthy parents. 756

SAN DIEGO COUNTY (KGTV)-- County supervisors announced that we are just days away until San Diegans can finally relax on the beach.But some are jumping the gun.It was the announcement San Diegans were waiting for."On Tuesday, June 2, passive activities will be allowed on beaches, so long as groups stay within their household units, social distance from other non-family members, and facial coverings," San Diego County Supervisor, Greg Cox announced on Thursday.Supervisors said sitting on the sand, towels, and chairs will be allowed. But sports such as football and volleyball will continue to be prohibited. Parking lots and piers will also remain closed. However, many people seemed to forget about the start date: Tuesday, June 2.On the evening of the County announcement, a 10News viewer witnessed a graduation party in Oceanside. The photos showed a mass gathering with many people sitting on the sand, with almost no one practicing social distancing or wearing masks. "I'm sure everybody is anxious to get out with their family, sit on the beach and enjoy the nice weather," Solana Beach visitor, Labib Samarrai said. But on Saturday, most people seemed to be following the rules at Solana Beach."I think everybody is now maybe over-educated, but it's all good," Samarrai said. Lifeguards at Solana Beach and Pacific Beach say they are still focused on educating the public, instead of actively ticketing visitors who disregard the County Public Health order. "They're only telling people that are not where they want them," Pacific Beach surfer Jake Curran said. For Curran, the passive activity phase does not make much of a difference in his usual routine. But for his girlfriend, June 2 can't come soon enough. "She has been visiting for the past month, trying to find activities for her and I to do while she is in town," Curran said. "But it will be nice on Tuesday for her to come out, come lay out, take some pictures, and watch the sunset and whatnot."While the County allowed passive activities to begin on June 2, they say it is ultimately up to each jurisdiction if they want to adopt the new phase on that day. 2143

SAN DIEGO -- A 9-year-old San Diego girl is using her cookie business to help support other businesses.The 9-year-old, named Daniele, wrote a letter to Kenny Chen, the owner of Onyx Moto in Kearny Mesa, proposing a way to increase business.Daniele is proposing that Chen use Girl Scout Cookies to sell more motorcycles.RELATED: Girl Scout sells more than 300 boxes of cookies at San Diego marijuana dispensary“You can give customers a box (of girl scout cookies) while they sign all those papers. They may even buy the second warranty,” the three-page letter reads.“You have customers and they get hungry.
