BEIJING, April 23 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government is "trying its best" to look for families for orphans in the Qinghai quake zone while trying to give them special care, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs."Among all people in the quake-hit areas, children whose parents were killed during the quake are in the most difficult situation and need special care," said an unnamed official with the ministry Friday.Government organizations and social groups would work together to care for the orphans.The ministry said it would seek adoptions for all orphans in the quake zone as soon as possible, and would "fully respect" the children's preferences and the traditions and habits of ethnic children.Six children were reportedly injured in the quake when a four-story orphan school collapsed. A total of 220 students are living in tents.The total number of orphans in the quake zone is not available.According to the ministry, social welfare organizations in Xining, capital of northwest China's Qinghai Province, have set aside more than 300 beds for orphans and children whose parents or other family members have not been contactable since a 7.1-magnitude quake hit Yushu, Qinghai, on April 14.The ministry also planned to mobilize help from other regions if Qinghai had difficulty settling the orphans.Previous reports said SOS Children's Villages in Chengdu, Urumqi, Beijing and Tianjin would contact with the civil affairs department in Yushu and prepare for the arrival of orphans.The central government and Qinghai authorities would jointly provide each orphan with a monthly financial support of 1,000 yuan (146 U.S. dollars) for three months from April.In addition, figures from the ministry show that a total of 56,000 tents had reached the quake zone as of Friday evening, along with 117,000 coats and 208,000 quilts among other daily necessities and relief materials.The quake in Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu has left 2,187 people dead and 80 missing. BEIJING, June 2 (Xinhua) -- China's vegetable prices will fall further with increasing supplies as temperatures continue to climb, the National Development and Reform Commission, the country's top economic planner, said Wednesday.Average retail prices for 15 kinds of vegetables, including tomatoes, cucumbers and eggplants, dropped by 10.15 percent in May from April, the NDRC said.Prices for some vegetables fell drastically when the peak supply season came by the end of May, it said.NDRC monitoring showed prices of cucumbers on May 26 averaged 4.04 yuan (59 U.S. cents) per kg, 22 percent down from a month earlier while green rape dropped 20.1 percent in price month on month to 7.82 yuan per kg.In China, food prices account for a third of the weighting in the consumer price index (CPI), a main gauge of the country's inflation.China's CPI picked up in April, rising 2.8 percent year on year because of lower comparison base last year and rising food prices because of adverse weather.The government set a target to keep the full-year growth in the CPI at about 3 percent this year.

BEIJING, April 13 (Xinhua) -- China's drought relief authorities said Tuesday heavy rains had eased the drought in southwest China's Sichuan Province, but dry weather and high temperatures continued in other affected regions.Compared with data collected last Sunday, people and livestock facing shortage of drinking water in Sichuan had decreased by 500,000 and 560,000 respectively by Tuesday, said the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters (SFDH).Heavy rains also reduced the area of affected arable land in Sichuan by 2.33 million mu (155,333 hectares) by Tuesday, according to the SFDH.However, drought still persisted in other areas, including the provinces of Yunnan and Guizhou and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region as rain in these regions was far from adequate.As of Tuesday, drought had left 24.62 million people and 18.08 million livestock short of drinking water, said the statement.
