Two teenagers have been charged in connection with the death of a man found injured at the Great Frederick Fair in Maryland. The Frederick County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of an assault Friday near the midway area of the fairgrounds and found the 59-year-old victim unconscious, a news release from the agency said. The man was flown to the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore for further treatment; he died Saturday, the release said. He was identified on Monday as John Marvin Weed, of Mount Airy, Maryland.Witnesses told investigators the man was the victim of an unprovoked attack, and two juvenile suspects were identified and located by deputies, the sheriff's office said.No weapons were used in the attack, the news release said. The teens, a 15-year-old male and a 16-year old male, are in the custody of the Department of Juvenile Services awaiting a hearing. They have both been charged, with the 15-year-old facing charges of reckless endangerment and first- and second-degree assault. The 16-year-old was charged with one count of second-degree assault, the news release said. The sheriff's office said it is working with prosecutors on possible additional charges. The victim's body has been sent to the state medical examiner's office for an autopsy and the sheriff's office is consulting with the state attorney's office to determine whether the teens will face additional charges, the sheriff's office said.Neither the teens nor the victim have been publicly identified. 1519

When Jill Lorentz was in her 20s, she said her mother started showing signs of forgetfulness. “As we got a little bit older, she started having mild memory loss and we didn’t think anything of it really," she recalled. "We just thought it comes with age.” However, she later learned her mother had Alzheimer’s Disease, a form of dementia.“She would ask you the same question that you had just answered,” Lorentz explained.Dementia causes a decline in memory, language, and problem solving.“The disease takes them in a place in the progression where they start losing the ability to go A to Z on any action,” Lorentz said. Lorentz saw this happen to her mom over the years, and eventually, to other members of her family, too. “We have had eight people in our family with some type of dementia,” she said.Every 65 seconds, someone in the U.S. develops Alzheimer’s Disease. Nearly six million people in the U.S. over the age of 65 are living with it, according to 2020 stats from the Alzheimer’s Association. “A lot of the focus is on today, what do we do now that we don’t have a cure and every little in the way of a treatment,” Amelia Schafer, the executive director of Alzheimer’s Association Colorado Chapter, said. “We now have more people living with Alzheimer’s and dementia than ever in our country and when we look at the trajectory we know it’s not slowing down.”One of the biggest risk factors is age.“Age is the number one risk factor so as we are aging as a population here in the U.S. it’s possible we’re more at risk,” said JJ Jordan, the Community Chair for Dementia Friendly Denver, a nonprofit that educates communities about dementia. As more people enter the later years of their life, with more awareness and more knowledge of the warning signs, different types of dementia are able to be diagnosed easier today than before.“I get about 90, 95 percent of my diagnosis from talking to them, getting to know them,” Dr. Samantha Holden, a behavioral neurologist with University of Colorado Health, said. “Even though we can’t cure these things, we can definitely manage them and make sure we’re improving people’s quality of life.”That’s where caregivers like Lorentz play an important role in the life of someone who has been diagnosed. After learning lessons taking car of her mom, she is now a caregiver to her sister, Judy, who also has dementia and lives in another state.“The one thing that I’ve done with my sister is having really open and honest conversations with her and having a safe place for her to come,” Lorentz said. 2561

Two officers in Honolulu have been shot and killed Sunday, Hawai'i Gov. David Ige confirmed. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports that officers were responding to an assault call near the base of Diamond Head when they encountered a male with a firearm, who then opened fire, striking two officers. The neighborhood where the shooting occurred is at the far end of the Waikiki Beach between the Honolulu Zoo and the famed Diamond Head State Monument. The area would be packed with tourists and locals, especially on a weekend. A home the suspected gunman was believed to be inside has been engulfed by flames. "As we express our condolences to their families, friends and colleagues, let us also come together to help and support those who have been forever changed by this tragedy," Ige said.Footage from news cameras show that multiple homes were on fire. The Star-Advertiser reported that 12 homes were affected by the fire, five of them destroyed. The Star-Advertiser reported that the sounds of live ammunition exploding from the fire could be heard near the scene.Honolulu's Mayor Kirk Caldwell issued a statement. "I would like to express my deepest condolences to the family and friends of the two officers as well as the entire Honolulu Police Department. This is an unprecedented tragedy for not only the City and County of Honolulu but the entire state of Hawai’i," Caldwell said. "Our office is in communication with the Honolulu Police Department as more details about the circumstances around this horrific event come to light. Our hearts go out to the first responders who are on the scene as this event unfolds." 1640
