A Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper was terminated after being caught on video pulling a mask off of a protester's face.Trooper Harvey Briggs was terminated Friday for "unprofessional conduct."A video surfaced of him interacting with protester, Andrew Golden, on the State Capitol grounds. Golden was recording a traffic stop of a woman near the Capitol, during which the protester claims Briggs ripped the protester's face mask off and threw it on the ground.The Tennessee Highway Patrol released the following statement:Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security Commissioner Jeff Long and Tennessee Highway Patrol Colonel Dereck Stewart today announced that a trooper in the Capitol Protection Unit has been terminated following an internal investigation into department policy violations.Trooper Harvey Briggs, a 22-year veteran of the department was served a termination notice on Friday, August 14, 2020 for unprofessional conduct. The department placed Trooper Briggs on discretionary leave with pay on August 12, after the department opened an investigation into reported policy violations on August 11.It is the Department of Safety and Homeland Security’s policy to warn, suspend, demote or dismiss any employee whenever just or legal cause exists. Two Miami (Ohio) University students filed a federal lawsuit on Monday claiming the university relied on "erroneous" information when it suspended them for violating Miami's student code of conduct related to COVID-19. Miami suspended the students, identified as Jane Roe and Jane Doe, based on an Oxford police investigation. The party was held Aug. 22 at the off-campus home Doe and Roe shared with eight other students, according to the lawsuit. An Oxford police officer cited Roe and Doe, both juniors, for violating city ordinances that limited noise and mass gatherings, according to records filed by their attorneys. The Oxford City Council passed the "emergency" mass gatherings ordinance in response to concerns about COVID-19. The ordinance limits social events to 10 individuals at the same time. Court records show Miami's administrative hearing officer determined that Roe and Doe violated the university's code of conduct and may have placed students at risk of contracting COVID-19. "I was not found responsible for hosting, planning, inviting, nor even being outside when the “mass gathering” was occurring," wrote Roe in her appeal letter. "I only came outside pursuant to a request from an Oxford police officer to speak with a resident regarding noise."Roe wrote that she took a leadership position by "stepping up" to comply with the officer's request."Now I am the one suspended from my school," she wrote. Doe echoed Roe's comments in her appeal letter."Perhaps most importantly, the timing of this incident is paramount to the case, as the date in question was Aug. 22, 2020, the first week of classes at Miami," Doe wrote. "Students were receiving limited clarifying information as to the exact expectations of the university."Clarifying guidance for Miami's policy on mass gatherings was provided five days after the Aug. 22 party, according to the lawsuit.Roe and Doe both lost their appeals, according to Miami records filed in the lawsuit.The Appeals Board agreed with the hearing officer's finding that there was "reasonable fear" that the party during a pandemic "may have endangered many people," according to Gerald Granderson, chair of the appeals board. According to the lawsuit filed on Monday, Miami suspended Roe and Doe for the fall semester and will not allow them to be on campus until January 1, 2021, according to the lawsuit. At the Denver Public Library, story time is one of the most popular programs. They're interacting with me, they're responding to questions, they're rhyming,” says children’s librarian Warren Shanks. But in the age of social media, a principal in Texas is offering children a more modern option: a digital version of story time. Principal Dr. Belinda George hosts the story hour called "Tucked in Tuesday" on Facebook Live. “You can't just stay stagnant. You'll lose the kids,” Dr. George says. “You got to meet them where they are.” The principal says she got the idea before Christmas break. “I knew I would miss my scholars,” she says. So, she decided to read them a story, while in her pajamas, from her living room. She decided to keep reading, with the goal of bridging the gap between home and school.What started with 35 students from her Texas elementary school, has grown to hundreds of kids and parents around the world. The response has been overwhelming. “In my head, I'm doing something that I love and I’m doing something for kids, and so the attention that I’m getting is kind of like I don't know the big deal yet,” Dr. George says. Now, authors are sending in books for her to read, and some are even joining her during story time. But Dr. George says what's most important is that her students are learning.“They're learning to read with expression,” she says. “They're learning that the principal cares.” 1438
For Tammi Fitzgerald, being a flight attendant was an adventure. So much so, she thought she’d never want to retire from American Airlines. "I don't think there's a flight attendant out there that doesn't have a love affair with what they are doing," Fitzgerald says.But things took a turn after a strange incident in 2010. While on one flight, Fitzgerald says she smelled an unusual odor that made her sick. "My eyes were watering,” she describes. “I had a headache that was like on the front of my head, and it was just a bass drum and my nose started dripping." Fitzgerald compared the smell to the odor of moldy socks. Since then, Fitzgerald says she experienced several of what the airline industry calls "fume events.” "It's like kind of sticking and exhaust pipe out your car into your cabin and not doing anything about it," says Dr. Susan Michaelis, an aviation health and safety consultant. Michaelis, a former pilot, has a PHD in safety science. Some of her research on fume events has been published by the World Health Organization. Some experts say fume events happen because part of the air passengers breathe is pulled through the jet's engine. If it mixes with oils and chemicals and then goes into the cabin, they say it can make people sick. According to research done at Kansas State University, there are on average five fume events a day in the U.S. Judith Anderson with the Association of Flight Attendants worries it's a larger problem. "Because airlines are not required to report what are called fume events when they happen on the ground, that estimate of five or so per day is an underestimate of what's actually happening," Anderson says. Boeing disputes this, saying “cabin air is safe to breathe" and "exposure to trace levels of organophosphate contamination" is not harmful. "The initial symptoms can be flu-like symptoms, stomach cramping so you might think, ‘I’m coming down with something,’” Anderson says. “Many people report symptoms consistent with exposure to carbon monoxide gas, like headache, dizziness, fainting, disorientation, those sorts of symptoms." American Airlines told us they train crews to report fume events. Southwest says they use the modern Boeing 737, which has systems to keep the cabin safe. JetBlue didn't have an answer to our questions. Several airlines didn't respond at all. As for Fitzgerald, she says she had to take leave from her job because of fume events, and she eventually retired. Medical records show she was suffering from inhalation irritation. New transportation options are showing up in cities across the country, including shareable bikes, electric scooters, and now mopeds are even starting to compete for street space.However, with all these new electronic transportation options there are safety concerns. Starting this weekend, 400 electric mopeds will be hitting the streets of Washington, D.C. One thousand of the mopeds are already available for rent in New York City. The company behind these electric mopeds, Revel, plans to expand to other cities. “The benefit is really simple. The way you have to think about it: this is almost always at least half the cost of Uber and Lyft and twice as much fun,” says Paul Suhey with Revel. They're part of a growing number of transportation options people can rent by using their cell phone app. Most major cities already have electric scooters and bicycles. Last year in the U.S., people took 84 million trips on bikes and scooters, according to National Association of City Transportation officials. However, the influx of rides is causing safety concerns, with some concerned the vehicles will add to the congestion on the road. “If you're having to be aware of either a cyclist, a scooter rider, now a moped rider, who may go in between cars, you have to be careful and watch out for each other as you're using these different modes of operations,” says Jeanette Tejeda de Gomez with AAA. She says research shows moped riders are more likely to be injured or die than those walking, biking or driving a car. However, Revel says helmets are included with each rental, riders have to be at least 21, have a driver's license and they screen the rider's driving record. “From our first couple months operating in New York, in over 300,000 rides, 99.99 percent have happened without incident, and we understand that safety record doesn't happen by accident,” Suhey says.
