SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diegans could soon be using just their faces to board a plane, a cruise ship or get into a rock concert.It's because more companies are testing, or rolling out, the controversial facial recognition technology. "Facial recognition is great if it works. If it doesn't, it produces problems," said Stephen Cobb, senior security researcher at ESET. A Ticketmaster-owned company will soon test facial recognition to get people into events faster. In other words, a person could theoretically upload an image of their face onto an app, and then go right into the event without stopping for a ticket scan or, potentially, a security check.Jet Blue rolled out the facial recognition technology last year, and Royal Caribbean cruises is starting to do the same. "It sounds alright but it also sounds kind of weird to have your face in there," said Kathy Nagy, who used a mobile ticket to get into Wednesday's Padres game. "I think that having a ticket on your phone is just as fast as showing your face."Cobb said there are many concerns over how companies will maintain and protect people's data, including even whether they have the capabilities to avoid breaches."I don't see any commercial roll out of facial recognition which is purely around efficiency," he said. "Frankly, I have doubts around efficiency of the technology at this point."U.S. Customs and Border Protection is already using facial recognition technology at Lindbergh Field to scan international arrivals. The San Diego Police Department uses a mobile facial recognition device to confirm identities during certain arrests, such as when suspects won't provide their identity, or provide a false one. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego and National City Police detained three people and sought a fourth Friday at a South Bay home where a neighbor said shots were fired.The incident started Friday about 5 p.m. at Alpha and 47th streets in National City. A woman who lives near the home told 10News she heard gunfire. A 10News crew on the scene saw a man and woman leave the home with their hands raised. Police said three people were detained for questioning. Officers were searching for a fourth person in relation to the incident.There were no reports of injuries. 10News is monitoring breaking developments. 611

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County reported 284 new coronavirus cases on Thursday, 69 of those cases connected to San Diego State University.Thursday's reported cases bring the region's total to 41,608 cases.Since the fall semester started on Aug. 24, San Diego State has reported 509 confirmed COVID-19 cases and four probable cases. Greeters, or wellness ambassadors, are also on campus to remind students of COVID-19 policies.Violation of the policies can result in suspension or in extreme cases, expulsion.Thursday, the California State University system, which includes SDSU, announced that course would continue to be held mostly online in Spring 2021, with certain limited instances for in-person classes."We have learned from experience that announcing this decision now will allow faculty and staff to continue or start professional development to be even more effective in the virtual space. We also know that deciding now will allow our students and their families time to plan appropriately. This decision is the only responsible one available to us at this time," says CSU Chancellor Timothy White. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego may soon have more living spaces in commercial zones, due to ease of regulations approved by the San Diego City Council Tuesday.The amendments to the Live/Work Quarters rules allow for smaller living space in a place of business, add more business types that can include living areas, and authorize additional locations where Live/Work Quarters are allowed.The changes reduce the required minimum floor area from 750 square feet to 500 square feet, and eliminate the requirement for additional parking.RELATED: San Diego housing report focuses on region's needsTuesday’s amendments were part of Mayor Kevin Faulconer’s Housing SD reforms.“This is going to put underutilized commercial and industrial spaces to work in tackling San Diego’s housing crisis,” Mayor Faulconer said. “Lifting restrictions on housing will bring new life to old buildings and allow businesses owners to live where they work. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County's economy is estimated to lose about .4 billion this year due to the pandemic.The new estimates according to SANDAG say the region saw about .8 billion in estimated wages in the first six months of the pandemic. About 176,000 workers were left unemployed because of COVID-19.Of those who lost their job, one in five female employees who lost their job worked in the education sector, and two in three workers ages 16 to 24 who list their jobs were in the tourism sector.About 50% of Hispanic workers who have lost their job worked in the tourism sector, as well. The tourism sector has been hit especially hard by pandemic-related closures, with many of San Diego's hotels and attractions closed much of the summer.But tourism is just one of the industries suffering during the pandemic. SANDAG says about 80% of job loss due to COVID-19 was either in the tourism, retail, or education industries.Ray Major, Chief Economist for SANDAG, said people from neighboring cities are still coming to the area for short trips, but the loss of large conventions and weddings is the aspect of tourism that has the most detrimental impact."You have people flying in from all over the world to go to conventions and they spend a lot of money here in the region at our local restaurants, at our local attractions and that has almost completely dried up," said Major.Major added that even when the economy does recover, conventions may never look the same."The technology is such that it has enabled these conventions to go virtual and they’re doing a pretty good job. So now you really have to question is a business going to undertake the expense of sending their people across the country," said Major.Before COVID-19, SANDAG estimated the region's economy to grow about 2% higher than 2019's Gross Regional Product. Now, the agency estimates the economy to contract about 4.7%, or .4 billion.SANDAG estimated that the economy may grow by about 4.2% in 2021, which could bring the economy back up to 2019 levels. Major said predictions are showing a slower complete recovery, adding it could take until 2023 or 2024 for a full economic recovery, assuming a vaccine is available around early 2021.Major also said some of the industries that aren't hurting as badly are innovation, government and construction. He said the focus moving forward should be on helping people in failing industries shift to jobs that are more successful."What we’re going to have to do is really find those and focus on re-training programs to help people change careers. It’s not that easy for people to switch from one industry to another," said Major. 2671
