ESCONDIDO, CA (KGTV) — As we continue to live life in these pandemic times, people are eating most of their meals at home. And as the trend continues, Hawthorne Country Store in Escondido has seen a resurgence in homesteading."Homesteading is a little bit like the original McGuyvering," says managing partner Heather Thelen. She says it's a lifestyle about being self-sufficient when it comes to food and agriculture."Anything from gardening, food collection, hunting, preserving cheese, and using animals for food or for other uses," Thelen said. And because of the current pandemic, everything from chickens to pickling has become very common and popular. "To think that this is something we've been reminded about with COVID. When our supply chains got interrupted, and there wasn't availability of some of the things like meats or products, we just couldn't get because we couldn't go out," says Thelen. And at Hawthorne Country Store, they are offering and education is homesteading. And how in 2020, living off the land, can be quite simple and fun. "We're doing a few classes online, as well as YouTube videos to help people," Thelen said. "We want people to have access to local help, because the videos and the television shows that are out there, are in the Midwest. Even though that is fantastic information, it might not be the right information for Southern California."Thelen says it's a good reminder that if you can't buy it, make it."People are re-remembering that there were ways to do it, other than wrapped in plastic from a grocery store," she added. 1577

ESCONDIDO, Calif (KGTV) - An albino red-tailed boa constrictor named "Lemony Snicket" is back home.A man wearing a hood and backpack returned the snake on May 16 to the EcoVivarium children's museum in Escondido. Museum officials believe Lemony disappeared on April 29. The snake was dehydrated and had not been fed. It was also full of mites. Lemony will undergo a 30-day quarantine.RELATED: Snake named 'Lemony Snicket' missing after unfortunate events at Escondido museumThe boa disappeared after a series of — ahem, "unfortunate" — events during a tour at the children's museum. Lemony was taken out of its cage for guests, before being locked back up.During the tour, however, museum officials said a man in his 20s excused himself from the group never to return. Later in the day, they said the boa was missing.A security camera facing Lemony's enclosure was also inoperable. Earlier the same day, the camera broke. A security expert said it appeared the camera was knocked out by some type of electrical charge. The museum said it would not press any charges against the person they believe to have taken the snake. 1144

ESTERO, Fla. — A Florida man saved his dog from certain death after he wrestled an alligator that snatched the puppy and dragged the pooch into a pond."He just came out like a missile," 74-year-old Richard Wilbanks of Estero said of the gator that attacked Gunner, his cavalier King Charles spaniel.Wilbanks jumped into the water, pried open the gator's mouth and freed Gunner from the gator's jaws. The rescue was caught on camera by the Florida Wildlife Federation.Wilbanks told CNN that his hands were "just chewed up," but Gunner is doing OK."We live on a shared landscape," Florida Wildlife Federation spokeswoman Meredith Budd told WINK-TV in Fort Myers. "We don't just want to tolerate wildlife, but, rather, we want to thrive with wildlife on a shared landscape."Gunner now takes walks on a leash and away from the water's edge. This story was originally published by Peter Burke on WPTV in West Palm Beach, Florida 929

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV)- While many business owners were forced to make the painful decision to shut down during the pandemic, some still took the risk of opening for the first time.Samantha and Weston Nawrocki weren’t going to let the COVID-19 pandemic stop their goal of opening a new café locally.“For coffee, the great thing is most people treat it even non-pandemic as a to go item,” said Weston Nawrocki. The couple has a coffee shop and roasting location in Rancho Bernardo, but their new business is up and running in their own city, Escondido, just six blocks away from their home.Manzanita Roasting Company opened Friday inside The Grand, which is home to the historic Ritz Theater, now newly renovated.“I’ve been a resident since I was a kid,” said Samantha Nawrocki. “I always drove by and said ‘I wish something would go in there’ and now we’re in there.”The City of Escondido shut down a couple of lanes on Grand Avenue and helped businesses transition to provide outdoor services under the current COVID-19 restrictions. Now, more new businesses are opening on busy Grand Avenue.“We have Daydream, which is a lovely gift store, we also have Off The Grid Surplus, let’s say you’re an off-road enthusiast of the jeep crowd, that’s definitely going to be your place,” said Amber Tarrac, the Deputy Director of Economic Development for the City of Escondido. “We also have Good Omen Mead, a meadery which is amazing stuff to try.”Tony Pepperoni Pizzeria and Barrel republic are currently still under construction, but Tarrac said they should be opening on Grand Avenue sometime soon, although a specific date is not clear.“We’re really excited about them, they’ve been under construction for a while,” she said.Tarrac said it’s not just Grand Avenue doing well with new businesses; from March 1st through November 23rd, Tarrac said hundreds of new businesses opened across the city.“We’ve had 696 new businesses; these are new permanent, in city businesses,” she said. “The bulk of those businesses are actually home occupations, so we’ve had quite a few folks that have decided to become entrepreneurs and start different businesses out of their home. We also had a number of retailers and restaurants open up.”The Nawrocki’s say they were able to hire ten new employees right before the holidays. For them, it’s the positivity, help from the city, outpouring of local support, and the love of coffee that’s gotten them through this year.“I feel like there’s more people kind of walking around and excited to support small business,” said Samantha Nawrocki. “We come down here to grand avenue and support local businesses, so it’s really great to be a part of that.”Businesses in historic downtown Escondido will be participating in Small Business Saturday on the 28th, in an effort to get more people to shop local.Discounts and bonuses may be offered at some locations. The City of Escondido is helping small businesses with outdoor moves; to find out more, click here.Complimentary fencing is also available for businesses that want to move services outdoors. Tarrac said business owners can submit an order for a limited supply of fencing by emailing Business@Escondido.org 3195

Fat Bear Week is back, and voting is now open. The event is hosted by Katmai National Park and features a dozen brown bears preparing for hibernation. It’s an annual tournament comparing chubby bears and it’s getting renewed attention in 2020 as pandemic-weary Americans search for reasons to smile and look at adorable wildlife.Katmai National Park selects 12 bears preparing for the winter, some have names like “Holly,” who was 2019’s winner, “Grazer,” “Chunk,” “Otis,” and “Walker,” while others are identified by number. They then offer images of the bears from early this summer to images taken in the last few weeks to show how the animals are growing.Voting starts Wednesday and the head-to-head match-ups continue through October 6. Watch the animals on Katmai’s BearCam and vote daily on who is getting to be the fattest.A brown bear eats a year’s worth of food in just six months to help them survive through the winter, when they slow down and hibernate in their dens. The tournament is a way to celebrate the success of healthy bears doing what bears do. 1073
