A California man allegedly made a series of threats to Boston Globe employees in which he echoed President Trump's anti-press language.Robert D. Chain of Encino, California has been charged with one count of making threatening communications in interstate commerce, the US Attorney's Office for the District of Massachusetts said in a press release Thursday. Chain, 68, is due to appear in federal court in Los Angeles Thursday afternoon.The US Attorney's Office said Chain will be transferred to Boston "at a later date."Chain is accused of making several threatening phone calls to the Globe beginning almost immediately after the paper announced on August 10 that it was calling on newspapers across the country to publish editorials the following week standing up to Trump for referring to the press as "fake news" and "enemies of the people."According to court documents, on August 16, the day the editorial campaign was published in newspapers around the country, Chain made a call to the Globe's newsroom in which he said, "You're the enemy of the people, and we're going to kill every f***ing one of you. Hey, why don't you call the F, why don't you call Mueller, maybe he can help you out buddy. ... I'm going to shoot you in the f***ing head later today, at 4 o'clock."In another call allegedly made on August 22, Chain was asked why he was calling. According to court documents, he responded, "Because you are the enemy of the people, and I want you to go f*** yourself. As long as you keep attacking the President, the duly elected President of the United States, in the continuation of your treasonous and seditious acts, I will continue to threats, harass, and annoy the Boston Globe."More than 300 newspapers joined the Globe's initiative, with editorials running from coast-to-coast. In courting the other papers, the Globe proposed running the editorials to sound the alarm "on the dangers of the administration's assault on the press."Chain allegedly made at least 14 threatening phone calls to the Globe between August 10 and 22. A candidate for a seat in the House of Representatives in Maine has apologized after taking to Twitter to attack a student activist in Parkland.Leslie Gibson, a Republican, originally tweeted "There is nothing about this skinhead lesbian that impresses me and there is nothing that she has to say unless you're frothing at the mouth moonbat." Gibson wrote this about 18-year-old Emma Gonzalez.Gonzalez has been at the forefront of those speaking out following a shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on Feb. 14, 2018 in Parkland, Florida. She is leading the fight to make assault rifles harder to obtain.The candidate's attack tweets were deleted, and Gibson tweeted an apology, saying, "You are doing work that is important to you. I would like to extend my hand in friendship and to understand you."Gibson had been running unopposed for the seat in the 57th District in Maine. A gathering of supporters of President Donald Trump once again clashed with counter-protesters in Oregon on Monday, as the state continues to deal with political and civil unrest ahead of November's general election.Two people were arrested following Monday's skirmish. According to KGW-TV, Trump supporters initially gathered at Clackamas Community College in Oregon City for the "Oregon for Trump Labor Day Cruise Rally." Supporters of the President adorned their cars with campaign flags and made the short drive to Salem, Oregon. The Associated Press also noted that some participants displayed signs in support of the QAnon conspiracy theory.The vehicle parade made about an hour-long trip from Oregon City to Salem. The AP reports that most vehicles split from the group before arriving in Salem.In Salem, KGW reports that the group of about 150 was met by a group of about 50 Black Lives Matter protesters. At one point, the AP says the right-wing crowd "rushed" the Black Lives Matter protesters and fired paint pellets at them. The BLM protesters dispersed from the scene before police arrived to break up the rally.ABC News reports that among those Trump supporters who traveled to Salem were members of the Proud Boys, a right-wing group known for political violence.Monday's rally bore similarities to an Aug. 29 pro-Trump vehicle rally in Portland. During that rally, Trump supporters were seen on video spraying paint pellets and tear gas at peaceful protesters. Later, one Trump supporter, Aaron "Jay" Danielson, was shot dead by a left-wing counter-protester. The suspect in that shooting, Michael Forest Reinoehl, was shot and killed in Washington state Friday as U.S. Marshals attempted to take him into custody. 1738
