The cost of education can last a lifetime, as many people into their 50s and 60s are finding out.According to Federal Reserve, 2.8 million people in the U.S. over the age of 60 are sitting on some amount of student debt, a number that quadrupled from 700,000 in 2005 and continues to grow.“This is really a sledgehammer against the older generation in more ways than one,” says Alan Collinge, creator of online advocacy group for borrowers Student Loan Justice.Collinge has been campaigning for change surrounding laws for student loans since 2005, after trying to figure out a way to pay off his own crippling college costs.“It’s a really devastating phenomenon, and I’m seeing it destroy, literally wreck, families across the country,” Collinge says. In 2018, Americans over the age of 50 owed more than 0 billion in student loans, up from billion in 2004, according to the Federal Reserve. And most can’t afford to pay, forcing retirees to continue to work well past retirement age.“The problem has become exponentially worse since we began this fight 13 years ago,” he says.In Collinge’s group, he hears stories from people ages 18 to 80 years old, who can hardly afford to live, let alone retire.“The federal government can and does garnish Social Security from seniors as a result of their student loans, so we’re hearing stories from people who at the end of the month they’re unable to buy medicine even unable to pay their rent,” Collinge says, “What kind of country does this to their senior people?”On top of that, Collinge says more people in their 50s and 60s are taking out Parent Plus loans to help their children and grandchildren pay for college, which adds to the financial burden.“This is a nationally threatening phenomenon,” he said. Through his advocacy group, he tries to offer help and resources to folks who are struggling. He’s currently on a road tour talking to legislators around the country, encouraging them to reform borrower laws, expand their rights and get colleges to crack down on sky-high tuition costs.“Student loans are the only loans in the country not subject to bankruptcy, why is that? The numbers are just getting so astonishing now, I can only hope that the new Congress puts this issue front and center and doesn’t get distracted by the palace intrigue because this is a problem affecting real people it just won’t wait any longer.” 2413

The first person known to be cured of HIV infection, Timothy Ray Brown, has died. He was 54.Brown was long known as “the Berlin patient” for where his historic treatment took place. He died Tuesday at his home in Palm Springs, California, according to his partner. The cause was a return of the cancer that originally prompted the unusual bone marrow and cell transplants Brown received in 2007 and 2008, which for years seemed to have eliminated both his leukemia and HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.His case inspired more research toward a cure, something that many scientists had thought impossible until his example proved that it was. 645

The criminal justice system across the United States has a backlog of cases because of the pandemic. In the meantime, the victims' families wait anxiously for justice.Arnulfo Ochoa cannot control his tears as he looks at a picture of his late daughter Marlen Ochoa-Lopez, who would have celebrated her 21st birthday this month. The suspects, Clarissa Figueroa, and her daughter, Desiree, lured the victim to a house with the promise of free baby clothes. They then allegedly strangled Marlen, before taking the baby from her womb. The Figueroas face first-degree murder charges.Ochoa says he is frustrated because COVID-19 has forced the courts to reschedule the hearings over and over. The National District Attorneys Association says there are backlogs of criminal cases in every state, and daily court dockets have fewer cases because of the social-distancing restrictions. In many cases, trials and hearings are done remotely. 935

The Catholic Diocese of Youngstown released a list of names Tuesday of clergy personnel credibly accused of sexual abuse of a minor and who were reported to authorities. After a thorough investigation, Bishop George V. Murray, S.J., accepted the accusations as credible, according to the news release sent by the diocese.“I am very sorry that the Church has failed to act aggressively to eliminate this evil.  I humbly ask forgiveness from the victims and their families for the grave mistakes the Church has made," said Bishop Murray in the release.Through the investigation, Bishop Murray said, “that as painful as the process of voluntary disclosure of names is for parishioners where these men served, this is one way that we can offer support and dignity to the survivors of clergy sexual abuse and their families.”The following is a list of clergy members who had credible, substantiated allegations of sexual abuse of a minor made against them, according to the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown: 1022

The freewheeling entrepreneur who built Tower Records into a global business and pioneered a new way to sell music has died at 92.Russ Solomon, who started selling records at his father's pharmacy in the 1950s, passed away on Sunday at his home near Sacramento, California. The founder of Tower Records died while watching the Academy Awards, his son Michael Solomon told the Sacramento Bee."He was giving his opinion of what someone was wearing that he thought was ugly, then asked [his wife] Patti to refill his whiskey," Michael Solomon told the newspaper.Solomon had passed away by the time his wife returned. The first Tower Records opened in Sacramento in 1960, and by 1968 the company had expanded to San Francisco. Its iconic yellow and red signs would later be seen as far away as London and Tokyo.Fans flocked to the stores, attracted by a relaxed atmosphere where it was easy to bond with other music aficionados. Solomon did not have a dress code for employees, who mixed easily with customers."If you came into town, you went into Tower Records," Bruce Springsteen said in a documentary about the company called "All Things Must Pass."Solomon told Billboard Magazine in 2015 that his favorite regular was Elton John."He probably was the best customer we ever had," Solomon said of the pop star. "He was in one of our stores every week, literally, wherever he was -- in L.A., in Atlanta when he lived in Atlanta, and in New York."The chain thrived on massive demand for physical music -- first records and then CDs. Solomon built sprawling mega stores where fans could find everything from pop hits to obscure albums. But the retailer was soon undermined by dramatic changes in the music industry. The rise of music sharing sites such as Napster put it under pressure, and the company's debt ballooned. Tower declared bankruptcy in 2004, and was liquidated in 2006."The banks said 'we don't need a visionary,'" Solomon lamented in "All Things Must Pass," which was directed by Colin Hanks."When we met Russ," Hanks told Billboard in 2015, "it took less than a second to realize this guy is a great character and one of the most humble people I had ever met."  2180
