SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- All evacuation orders and warnings have been lifted following a brush fire that erupted in San Diego's Talmadge neighborhood Tuesday afternoon. The fire started after 1 p.m. on Fairmont Avenue and Aldine Drive near Central Elementary School. The fire could be seen burning up a canyon in the area as smoke billowed into nearby neighborhoods. At times, flames came within 200 feet of homes. Evacuations were briefly ordered for Norma Drive, Constance Drive and Natalie Drive. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A woman was killed and two men were injured following a shooting at a Church's Chicken in Otay Mesa West Wednesday night. According to San Diego Police, the shooting of the three employees was reported at the restaurant in the 3700 block of Del Sol Boulevard just after 5:30 p.m. Police say a man in his 30s walked into the restaurant early in the evening. "The suspect got into a verbal argument with employees and left the restaurant. Surveillance video from a business across the street shows the suspect parking and re-parking his car several times between 4:40 p.m. and 5:22 p.m. At 4:53 p.m., video shows the suspect walking into the establishment before going back to his car at 5:08 p.m. The man re-parked his car at 5:22 p.m. before walking into the restaurant a final time at 5:27, when the shooting took place. At 5: 30 p.m., video shows the suspect walking to his car before driving away with his lights off. Minutes later, at 5:34 p.m., a San Diego Police vehicle arrived at the Church's Chicken. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego sailor is on a mission to keep homeless veterans from going cold this winter.U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer Gregory Ellis hopes to raise ,500 for winter jackets that convert into both sleeping bags and over-the-shoulder bags during the off-season.The jackets are made by the Detroit-based nonprofit The Empowerment Plan, which hires single parents from homeless shelters to sew the jackets. “Our homeless veteran community, many of them are very proud and don’t want to be a burden on anybody,” said Ellis.He plans to deliver the jackets to veterans staying at the Veterans Village of San Diego temporary bridge shelter, which houses nearly 200 homeless veterans. “A jacket that actually converts into a sleeping bag, that actually converts to an over-the-shoulder bag, it’s three times beneficial for them, so at least they’ll have something warm to put over their shoulders and keep them out of the elements.”Ellis says he wants veterans to know the community cares about them and is grateful for their service.You can donate to the fundraising effort here. 1099

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — After receiving criticism from the Chicano Federation, UCSD Health officials met with the group Friday to review plans to recruit volunteers for a COVID-19 vaccine clinical trial.The Chicano Federations sent the following statement Thursday after hearing about UCSD’s plans to enroll approximately 1,600 volunteers to participate in the AstraZeneca COVIS-19 Phase 3 clinical trial:“Once again, the burden of COVID-19 is falling on communities of color. It is unfair that underserved communities who have the least access to information are now being targeted to participate in an experimental vaccine. This tactic, unfortunately, does not come as a surprise given that this country has a history of using people of color for experimental medical treatments. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A stretch of Harbor Drive near San Diego International Airport was shut down after a deadly crash Wednesday morning.The single-vehicle crash was reported just after 11 a.m. on northbound Harbor Drive, about a mile from the airport’s Terminal 1.ABC 10News learned a blue car traveling at a high rate of speed on the southbound side struck an object, lost control and then crossed the median onto the northbound lanes before coming to rest.The driver was declared dead at the scene.Due to the wreck, authorities were forced to close off at least one lane on northbound Harbor Drive, creating a lengthy backup for motorists heading towards the airport. 676
