Nitro is coming to a Starbucks near you.Every company-operated US Starbucks location will offer the nitrogen-infused cold brew coffee, which comes out of a tap, by the end of next year to meet customer demand, the company said on Thursday. The expansion is part of Starbucks' plan to sell more products next year — especially as Frappucino sales slip.Frappuccinos used to help drive sales for Starbucks. But in recent years, increasingly health-conscious customers have turned on the sugary blended beverages.Cold drinks like iced espresso, cold brew and Refresher juice drinks have driven more than 80% of Starbucks' beverage growth over the last two years, said Roz Brewer, chief operating officer for Starbucks, during the company's investor day presentation."As you know, our primary softness has been centered around Frappuccino," Brewer said on Thursday.Frappuccino drinkers tend to treat the drink as a one-off purchase, she noted. But customers are more loyal to cold brews and iced coffees. "These categories are more habitual and create more brand affinity," she said. The company is not moving away from Frappuccinos, Brewer noted. Starbucks is just offering new options for the blended drinks and expanding its cold drink portfolio.Starbucks started selling Nitro in its Roastery and Tasting Room in Seattle. The brew was such a hit that Starbucks expanded it to 500 Starbucks stores later that year.Right now, 2,500 out of 8,500 US company-operated stores serve Nitro cold brew. The expansion is "pretty substantial for us," Brewer told CNN Business.Nitro-serving taps will be added to all Starbucks stores, Brewer added. "That equipment is coming in around the country now."Brewer said she especially likes how Nitro looks when it's being poured into a glass. That "little bit of theater," she said, adds a visual element to the drink. The company also plans to expand its blended coffee offerings next year."We've got some new things coming ... that will allow us to use Nitro technology plus cold foam," Brewer said. Starbucks introduced cold foam, which tops some of the company's iced drinks, this year. To improve sales at Starbucks (SBUX) stores, the company is also investing in developing digital relationships with customers and making its stores more efficient to allow baristas to spend more time with customers. The company also plans to expand its partnership with Uber Eats to nearly a quarter of company-operated US stores early next year. The Starbucks Delivers pilot program ran in Miami this year. And it's continuing its aggressive Chinese growth strategy with a new virtual store, which allows customers to buy Starbucks gift cards and order merchandise through an integrated app. 2718

NEW YORK CITY, NY -- New York Police Department Deputy Inspector Stewart Loo says he's going to do something about hate crimes targeting Asian Americans in the city.He says it's close to his heart."This hit home for me because I have friends, families who are legitimately afraid to go outside because they have feared for their safety.”The new task force was introduced Tuesday by Chief of Detectives Rodney Harrison."This task force has been built and will continue to build trust and understanding between the NYPD and Asian New Yorkers,” he said. The task force was put together in response to a rise in hate crime attacks on the Asian community amid the coronavirus pandemic. A result of the harsh rhetoric surrounding the virus, which is believed to have originated in Wuhan, China, before spreading around the globe. Some Asian New Yorkers bore the violent backlash of rhetoric gone wrong. There have been 21 attacks in the city since March."Asian New Yorkers were attacked on trans, buses, [in] parks, restaurants and walking in their own neighborhoods,” said Harrison. He praised the hate crimes task force for clearing about 17 arrests but admitted the reluctance on the part of some victims to follow up with the active investigations due to language barriers, cultural differences, or even fear of the police. This story was first reported by Craig Treadway at WPIX in New York. 1395

Newly released emails cast doubt on claims by Secretary Ben Carson and his spokesman that he had little or no involvement in the purchase of a ,000 furniture set for his Department of Housing and Urban Development dining room.Emails show Carson and his wife selected the furniture themselves. An August email from a career administration staffer, with the subject line "Secretary's dining room set needed," to Carson's assistant refers to "printouts of the furniture the Secretary and Mrs. Carson picked out." 519

NEWBURY PARK (KGTV) -- A wind-driven brush fire has erupted in Southern California, burning near structures in the Newbury Park area of Ventura County.Cal Fire says the Hill Fire has quickly grown to 5,000 to 7,000 acres, shutting down both directions of Highway 101, as of 4 p.m. More than 160 firefighters have been dispatched, and eight air tankers have been ordered. At a Thursday night news conference, Ventura County fire officials said they expect the blaze to burn all the way to the Pacific Ocean. Should winds pick up, the blaze could reach the ocean by Friday morning. According to firefighters, the fuel burning hasn't seen a wildfire in a long time, adding to the intensity of the fire. One firefighter did receive minor injuries fighting the blaze. The nature of the injury wasn't specified. The Hill Fire is about 5 miles from the site of a shooting Wednesday night at a bar in Thousand Oaks, California, in which 12 people were killed. It's the second brush fire in the area as another fire, dubbed the Woolsey Fire, had burned about 300 acres to the east in the Bell Canyon area as of 4 p.m.Gusty Santa Ana winds are blowing through Ventura and neighboring Los Angeles counties at about 25-30 miles per hour. Wind speeds are set to peak Friday morning. The fire's spread has prompted evacuations to the following areas: 1371

New research suggests the CDC’s eviction moratorium has helped reduce the spread of COVID by a considerable amount. One of the main ways state and local governments have tried to curb the growth in coronavirus cases have been through stay-at-home orders, but remaining at home can be close to impossible for the tens of thousands of Americans that have been evicted during the pandemic.“We start to see cases and deaths increase at significant levels about 7 to 10 weeks after the eviction moratorium lifts,” said Kathryn Leifheit, lead researcher of the study conducted at UCLA.The study is awaiting peer review, but it suggests that more than 10,000 COVID-19 deaths and 430,000 COVID-19 cases can be attributed to evictions that took place in 27 states across the country before the federal government enacted its eviction moratorium in September.“We had this hypothesis that evictions might lead people to move into households with their friends or family, or in a worst-case scenario move into homeless shelters,” said Leifheit. The study found the biggest number of cases happened in southern states where eviction moratoriums were lifted sooner. That includes Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, and South Carolina, which all saw at least 20,000 additional COVID cases and 600 deaths thought to be tied to evictions. The biggest jump, though, came in Texas where there were 148,000 additional COVID cases and more than 4,400 deaths.“In general, the folks that get evicted tend to be lower-income and people of color,” said Leifheit. “As we know, those are the people that are really bearing the brunt of the COVID pandemic.”If the recent 0 billion stimulus bill passed by Congress does not extend it, the CDC’s eviction moratorium will expire on Jan. 1.With the way the numbers and weather are trending now, Leifheit fears a confluence of events that could lead to massive growth in cases.“Transmission rates are soaring right now,” she said. “To take away housing, which may be a pretty fundamental protection people have against COVID right now, could be catastrophic.” 2083
