GREELEY, Colorado — Authorities released Monday the autopsy reports of Shanann Watts, 34; Bella Watts, 4; and Celeste Watts, 3. The reports concluded that all three victims died of asphyxiation — Shanann was strangled while the two girls were smothered, according to the reports. The reports had been sealed until the outcome of the trial. However, Chris Watts — Shanann’s husband and father of Bella and Celeste — pleaded guilty to their murders earlier this month and was sentenced Monday to life in prison without the possibility of parole.All three victims were pronounced deceased on Aug. 16. The girls' bodies were found submerged in an oil tank on property owned by the company Watts worked for. His wife's body was found in a shallow grave nearby.The autopsy reports state that Shanann Watts was found in a purple T-shirt and underwear. She had patterned abrasions on her neck and the left side of her face when her body was found. Weld County District Attorney Michael Rourke said during sentencing Monday that the lack of significant injuries to Shanann Watts suggested that her death came slowly.The coroner noted in the report that Shanann had been in the second trimester of pregnancy at the time of her murder. Family members had called the unborn child “Nico.” Chris Watts was convicted of unlawful termination of a pregnancy. Bella’s report indicates she had a pink pajama-type top with images of hearts and butterflies and underwear on when her body was found. The coroner found blunt force trauma on Bella’s jaw and lacerations and contusions in her mouth. Her left shoulder was discolored, and teeth impressions and superficial bite marks were found on the surface of Bella’s tongue — signs, Rourke said, Bella "fought for her life." Celeste was found in a pink and black T-shirt. The 3-year-old was wearing a diaper and underwear. Celeste had no visible injuries.Prosecutors said Chris Watts was having an affair and making plans for a new life. Rourke said Watts talked with a real estate agent about selling the family's home, looked up secluded vacation spots and didn't seem interested in the self-help books his wife provided.A friend asked police to check on Shanann Watts on Aug. 13 after not being able to reach her and grew concerned that the expectant mother had missed a doctor's appointment. Watts spoke to Denver7 from the front porch of the family's home in Frederick, pleading for his family’s safe return. Half of the coral populations in the Great Barrier Reef off Australia’s coast have been killed off because of warming ocean waters, a new study says.Between 25-30 percent of all marine species rely on coral reefs at some point in their life cycle. The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest coral reef, covering nearly 133,000 square miles.It has more than 411 species of hard corals documented, as well as 1,500 species of fish and other animals.Researchers looking at coral populations over 30 years starting in 1995 found there was decline in both shallow and deeper water, and across different species. They said two in particular, branching and table-shaped corals, were especially hard hit in 2016 and 2017 because of record-breaking temperatures.The study finds climate change to be a key driver in reef disturbances that disrupt recovery.“The potential for recovery of older fecund corals is uncertain given the increasing frequency and intensity of disturbance events. The systematic decline in smaller colonies across regions, habitats and taxa, suggests that a decline in recruitment has further eroded the recovery potential and resilience of coral populations,” the researchers note.They also say the coral that spawn the larvae that makes more coral have declined dramatically over large stretches of the reef.“Corals are tremendously resilient because of their capacity to produce millions of babies but they/we desperately need a break from disturbances,” Andreas Dietzel, a professor at the ARC Center and a co-author of the paper, said in an email to the Washington Post. 1600

HARPERS FERRY, W.V. – For more than 2,000 miles, the Appalachian Trail winds its way through more than a dozen states.It’s so-called “psychological midpoint” is the town of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia.“This community represents all the communities up and down the trail,” said Sandy Marra, who heads up the Appalachian Trail Conservancy.Ever since the pandemic began, she said there’s been a noticeable increase in people hiking the trail.“On any given weekday, even in the dead of summer, typically you wouldn't see anyone out on our trails,” Marra said. “And during the week now, you could see dozens and dozens of people just hiking.”That’s something other public lands across the country are seeing, too, in the time of COVID-19 and social distancing.Deborah Williams is with the Outdoor Industry Association, based in Colorado.“We did see a trend of more people exploring the outdoors in March and April and then that really did continue into May and June,” Williams said. “And what we initially saw is a little bit of escapism, in the first few weeks, actually continued.”That outdoor recreation can have a big impact on the economy.In West Virginia, for example, the outdoor industry is responsible for more than 91,000 direct jobs, 0 million in local and state tax revenue and billion in consumer spending.Across the country, it all adds up to 7 billion in consumer spending, supporting 7.6 million jobs.Williams said there’s the potential for that to grow even more in every state across America, in part, because of federal funding from the new “Great American Outdoors Act,” which was just passed by Congress and signed into law by the president.“It will fully fund the land and water conservation fund to the tune of 0 million,” Williams said. “So, this is our country's really flagship mechanism for funding conservation and maintenance of our public lands and waters.”Back at the Appalachian Trail, Sandy Marra hopes people now rediscovering the outdoors take care to protect it, as well.“Because of the pandemic and so many people wanting to get outside, the resource was being overwhelmed,” she said. “This is a great chance for us to reach a whole new audience of people. This is their park, right?
