(KGTV) - Suspected drug smugglers were rescued by U.S. Coast Guard crews this month after their vessel erupted into flames before sinking.Crews from the Coast Guard, Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations (AMO), the U.S. Navy ship USS Zephyr, and the Colombian Navy ship ARC "07 de Agosto" detected the high-speed vessel on April 7 in the eastern Pacific Ocean.As crews prepared to intercept the vessel, the suspected smugglers allegedly began abandoning their cargo and jumped from the boat as it caught fire.RELATED: Canadian who posted drug smuggling trip on Instagram sentenced to prisonCrews rescued four suspected smugglers and spent 90 minutes extinguishing the flames."There was no doubt in our minds what needed to be done to salvage the evidence needed for a successful prosecution even if it meant laying Zephyr alongside a burning hull, with the intense heat and acrid smoke hindering our 90-minute firefight," Lt. Cmdr. Grant Greenwell, the commanding officer of the Zephyr, said.After putting out the fire, crews say they recovered about 1,080 pounds of cocaine. A "very bizarre" car crash in Canada resulted in the arrests of five people who were found naked after the collision.On Monday, officers with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police were called to the scene of a crash involving a car and pickup truck in Nisku, Alberta, according to CBC News.At the scene, officers arrested three adults and two "youths." All five were naked when police caught them, according to the Edmonton Journal.The crash apparently happened after police said the suspects kidnapped three people — a man, a woman and an infant — from a home and forced them into the car. The man, who was apparently locked in the car's trunk, managed to escape the moving vehicle and flag down a man driving a pickup truck.CBC reported that the passerby managed to get all three kidnapping victims into his truck and was driving them away when he was rammed by the suspects, which forced his truck into a ditch.None of the victims were injured in the ordeal.The kidnapping suspects have not been named and it's unclear why they were naked at the scene of the crash. A Royal Canadian Mounted Police investigator described the incident as "very bizarre" to The Guardian.The two underage suspects were released without charges. (KGTV) -- While COVID-19 has taken the lives of thousands across the country, one couple has come up with a way for their memories to live on. Rebecca Heiss and Dermot Jevens, from South Carolina, came up with the idea to create a site to honor those who lost their battles to the virus. “This is going to be an entire community built memorial,” says Jevens.“It was frustrating and sad and scary, and realizing that these were people,” says Heiss. “They weren’t just numbers.”“Mourning America” launched in late March. So far, there are 4,500 names posted. The couple has received nearly 100 submissions from families all over the U.S., with the picture and story of their loved one. The couple says some families haven’t been able to give their loved ones a proper memorial. “This lady’s mom passed away in a nursing home. She wasn’t able to be there with her,” says Jevens. “She wasn’t able to go to the funeral. You can feel that pain and almost that release as she was writing and sending in the story.”The couple has not received any submissions from San Diego yet, but they say their mission is to honor each person who has passed from the virus.
