We have consistently through Democratic and Republican administrations understood those agreements and principles be the foundation of building an ever stronger relationship (with China)," Steinberg said."So there is no change. It's a commitment that we understand be the bedrock of the foundation of the relationship between the two countries," he added.The deputy secretary appeared to be quite positive about U.S.- China relationship despite recent troubles between the two countries caused by the announcement of new U.S. arms sales to Taiwan in January and President Barack Obama's meeting with the ** Lama in February."I think it is fair to say for the first 15 months of the new administration here, U.S.-China relations have been extremely constructive," Steinberg said in his opening remarks at the briefing."I think we avoided the dangers of transition that often happen in our relations with China and were able to start a very stable and promising course on our relationships, beginning with a phone call between (Chinese) President Hu (Jintao) and President Obama in February of last year, their meeting in London at the G-20 in April and culminating in President Obama's visit to China last fall," he said.At the levels of the Cabinet, he said, the two sides have seen the deepening of bilateral ties through the creation of the Strategic and Economic Dialogue (S&ED), which really reflects both the breadth and the depth of U.S.-China relationship.Steinberg said he knew that in recent months there's been speculation about whether there's been a change in U.S.-China relationship because of differences between the two sides on issues related to Taiwan, Tibet, as well as economic and trade policy.He said his trip to China early this month, along with National Security Council Senior Director for Asian Affairs Jeffrey Bader, provided a chance for both sides to discuss how to build on strong bilateral dialogue to seize the opportunities in the relationship and the need for the two countries to work together, as well as to manage their differences.During the trip, Steinberg said, the U.S. side had made clear that it does not support "Taiwan independence," welcomes recent improvements in cross-strait relations and hopes that the improvements will continue and expand.He added that the U.S. side had also reaffirmed its position that it does consider Tibet to be a part of China and does not support "Tibet independence."Steinberg said the two sides also discussed issues in economics and trade as well as security issues, such as the nuclear issues of the Korean Peninsula and Iran.

This macroeconomic control policy is an action taken to fight against a crisis," he said.Tang believed that whether or not the policies are successful should be judged from the macro perspective instead of a micro perspective."China was able to resume its rapid growth first when the global economy was still going downhill," Tang said, "China also successfully kept the confidence of its people and enterprises, which is more important than anything else. Therefore, the government's macro control is very successful."

CHANGSHA, May 13 (Xinhua) -- The body of an elderly man has been recovered from the debris of a landslide, bringing the death toll from rainstorms in central China's Hunan Province to 12, the Hunan flood-control and drought relief headquarters said Thursday.About 42,000 people were relocated to safe areas over the past day as the rainstorms lashed more than 280 townships in Hunan from 2 p.m. Wednesday, said a statement from the headquarters.The latest victim was a 72-year-old man who died in a rain-triggered landslide in Xupu County of Huaihua City, where four bridges collapsed and 68 roads were cut by flooding, said Zhou Shengqi, publicity officer of Xupu.  A strawberry field in Loudi, Central China's Hunan province is flooded on May 13, 2010. BEIJING, April 3 (Xinhua) -- China will launch a two-month campaign to inspect work safety nationwide on April 5, according to the work safety commission of the State Council, or the Cabinet.Serious accidents took place in succession in some areas and industries recently, which shows negligence and loopholes in work safety management and serious violations to laws and regulations, said a circular issued by the commission.The inspection would focus on work safety in mines, the chemical industry, transportation and fire-works mills, among others.The campaign would include self-examination by enterprises, government inspection and public supervision.Enterprises are required to complete self-examination in April and local governments to conduct inspection in May, while the commission would dispatch supervision teams to check their work.The nationwide campaign comes days after 153 coal miners were trapped in a flooded coal mine in north China's Shanxi Province, which will be China's worst mining disaster in more than two years if the miners cannot be saved.

BEIJING, May 6 (Xinhua) -- Malta President George Abela missed the spectacular opening ceremony of the World Expo in Shanghai because of a leg injury, but he felt something that he said he would remember forever during the special Chinese tour.In the morning of April 30, twelve hours before the opening ceremony of the World Expo, Abela's leg was hurt in an accident.
