KENOSHA, Wis. — The father of Jacob Blake says his son was left paralyzed from the waist down after he was shot by a Kenosha police officer Sunday.Blake’s father told the Chicago Sun-Times that he was told his son was shot eight times during the Sunday evening confrontation with police, which was captured on cellphone video and led to two nights of unrest in the city that's along Lake Michigan between Milwaukee and Chicago.The father, who is also named Jacob Blake, said he was driving from Charlotte, North Carolina, to Kenosha to be with his son.He said his son has “eight holes” in his body and that doctors don’t know if the paralysis will be permanent.Protests in Blake's honor happened across the country Monday night, including in Portland, San Diego, New York, Minneapolis, and Denver.Police declared a riot in Portland after fires were set outside of the offices of the police association. In San Diego, at least three protesters were arrested.Locally, anger over Blake's shooting spilled into the streets of Kenosha for a second night Monday. Police again fired tear gas at hundreds of protesters who defied a curfew, threw bottles and shot fireworks at law enforcement guarding the courthouse.Wisconsin Democratic Gov. Tony Evers activated 125 members of the National Guard to assist local law enforcement Monday. Police fired the tear gas about 30 minutes after an 8 p.m. curfew took effect, but many protesters remained out hours later.Blake was shot by Kenosha police just after 5 p.m. Sunday. Matt Bevin on April 26 signed House Bill 528, which makes Kentucky the first state in the country to establish a blanket presumption "that joint custody and equally shared parenting time is in the best interest of the child" in every divorce case."This should lead to less fighting between parents because we're not pitting parents against parents anymore in a winner-take-all situation," National Parents Organization Kentucky chairman Matt Hale said. "We think that'll lead to less parenting conflict and better outcomes for children."The law includes provisions to disqualify unfit parents based on histories of domestic violence or significant mental health problems as well as physical distance that would make co-parenting impractical.In general, Hale said, the new law will ensure children don't automatically "lose" a parent to divorce and parents' relationships after divorce don't have to become hostile over custody issues."What kid wouldn't want both of their parents in their life?" divorced mother Alexandra Beckman said. KANSAS CITY, Missouri — Jeff Henry, one of the men charged in the death of 10-year-old Caleb Schwab at Schlitterbahn water park, did not appear with his attorney in court Thursday, Dec. 13.His attorney stated Henry is at an inpatient facility in Houston, Texas. He asked the judge to stay his bench warrant until Jan. 24, 2019 when Henry returns for his other case.The attorney said Henry, a co-owner of Schlitterbahn, will begin an intensive outpatient program while in Houston. Henry is accused of allegedly arranging for a human trafficker to bring a woman to him at a hotel room in July 2018, a day after he was in court for the Schlitterbahn case.Part of the payment to the trafficker included passes to the water park, documents say.The state told the judge they were fine with the suggestion from Henry's attorney to stay his bench warrant since they have been in touch with authorities there and they say they have had no issues with Henry.Henry has a ,000 cash and surety bond and is under house arrest.Schwab died Aug. 6, 2016 from a neck injury sustained while he was on the 17-story Verrückt water slide with two other park goers. KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A mother is outraged after seeing a photo of her 7-month-old son tied up in a sleep sack at day care.Tanya, who asked her last name not be used because of her job with the government, said she got phone call from the Kansas Department of Children and Families (DCF) in late March. The department told her it was investigating a report involving a photo of her son at Miss Anne's Daycare in Leavenworth, Kansas.The DCF worker couldn’t send her the photo, so Tanya drove directly to the DCF offices in Leavenworth.“It was a picture of him in a sleep sack with his arms bound down and the sleeves of the sleep sack tied to the back with a ponytail holder, and he was laid face down with his face pretty much in the corner,” she said, shaking. Tayna drove directly from the DCF office that day to the day care, picked up her son, and he hasn’t been back.Tanya said she’s not really an emotional person, but the situation has been difficult.“You know, I was in the military for 22 years. I don’t shake easily…” she said. “This shook me to my core.”She wasn’t the only person to get a phone call.Deirdre Engle said she got a call, too. Someone had reported her daughter, Elora, being put down the same way — in a sleep sack, face down, with the sack pulled tight with a hair band. Engle said DCF had a photo and was investigating. “First, I thought there's no way that's my baby, she looks so small! She's laying on her tummy like she always does, but she looks uncomfortable. She's tied up. My baby is tied up," Engle said in a phone call. "She can't roll over, she can't sit up, if she were to cough up any of her formula, she'd choke. I got scared for her. She's been at this day care since she was 5 weeks old. I've trusted these people for her entire life and I was wrong,” wrote Engle.Engle pulled her daughter from the day care March 27. She has not taken her child back to the facility.Another mother, Jennifer New, also got a call from DCF in late March.
