UNITED NATIONS, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) -- China on Tuesday urged the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to further strengthen its leading role in enhancing global nuclear safety and promoting relevant international cooperation.Wang Min, Chinese deputy representative to the United Nations, made the remarks at an open meeting of the 66th session of UN General Assembly on the IAEA report.IAEA shoulders important responsibilities in promoting peaceful uses of nuclear energy and preventing nuclear proliferation, Wang said, adding that it needs to further summarize experiences and lessons of the Fukushima nuclear accident, assisting member states to enhance nuclear safety and emergency response capabilities.Wang urged the IAEA to "increase technical assistance to developing countries, improve newcomer's national nuclear infrastructure and promote the safe, secure and sustainable development of nuclear energy."The IAEA was also asked to strengthen nuclear safeguards regime, effectively prevent nuclear proliferation, and maintain an objective and impartial stand on sensitive and hot nuclear issues.China has always adhered to the principle of "safety first", he said. "China has established a rather comprehensive legal and standards system on nuclear safety, put in place an independent and effective supervision and regulatory framework, set up a comprehensive emergency response mechanism, and keep a good safety record in general."China has decided to contribute 200,000 U.S. dollars to the Nuclear Security Fund of the IAEA for the purpose of enhancing nuclear security capability of the Asia-Pacific Region, Wang added.

BEIJING, Oct. 10 (Xinhuanet) -- China's small businesses turned to be the first to ring the alarm as the country is walking a fine line between fighting inflation and maintaining growth.Some entrepreneurs have disappeared and others have jumped off buildings almost every week since April in Wenzhou City, an entrepreneurial capital in eastern China's Zhejiang province, Xinhua reported.The sudden disappearance of the business owners has revealed a surprisingly gloomy picture for the small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in China.RUNAWAY BOSSESAccording to a Xinhua investigation, at least 80 cash-strapped businesspeople in Wenzhou have skipped town or declared bankruptcy to invalidate more than 10 billion yuan (1.6 billion U.S. dollars) in debt.Just last month, two local entrepreneurs in Wenzhou killed themselves by jumping off the buildings and another broke his leg in a similar suicide attempt.The tragedies in Wenzhou are extreme cases of private SMEs struggling to survive a liquidity crunch amid the country's macro control policies set to curb inflation and cool down the over-heated property market.In Wenzhou, one-fifth of the 360,000 small and mid-sized businesses have stopped operating due to cash shortages, according to the city's council for small and medium-sized enterprises.Of the 855 companies surveyed by the Wenzhou Economic and Information Commission, more than 76 percent said they are almost out of money and are struggling to continue production.But many cash-strapped firms are unable to borrow money from banks, and some have turned to China's underground lending market to pool money from individuals and firms.The steep rates of the informal loans pushed some businesses to the brink of collapse.

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- Logitech, a provider of personal peripherals for computers and other digital platforms, said its production of Google TV was a "big mistake," giving a major blow to Google's aspiration to change the traditional TV experience, U.S. media reported on Friday.According to technology news site The Verge, at a recent analyst and investor meeting, Logitech chief executive officer Guerrino De Luca said the launch of Logitech Revue (with Google TV set-top box) last year was "a mistake of implementation of a gigantic nature."The project cost the company more than 100 million U.S. dollars in operating profit.He said the company had "brought closure to the Logitech Revue saga" and has "no plans to introduce another box to replace Revue" after the inventory runs out this quarter.The CEO also predicted that Google TV will have a chance sometime in the future, but it would be a "grandchild of Google TV " that would do it. Logitech has no plans to help make that happen.Launched during the holiday shopping season last year, the Logitech Revue with Google TV system was criticized for being pricey and unpolished although it gives consumers a streamlined experience of traditional TV content and online media. SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- Hewlett-Packard (HP) on Friday announced that it is keeping the webOS software alive by contributing it to the open source community.The company said it will make the underlying code of webOS available under an open source license and will engage the open source community to help define the charter of the open source project."WebOS is the only platform designed from the ground up to be mobile, cloud-connected and scalable," Meg Whitman, HP's chief executive officer, said in a statement."By contributing this innovation, HP unleashes the creativity of the open source community to advance a new generation of applications and devices," she added.HP said it will remain active in the development and support of webOS, while the source code will be available for use and improvement by anyone choosing to download it, which means other hardware manufacturers can also use the software.With the help of the open source community, HP can save development and other costs and the new announcement is expected to result in more layoffs from its webOS team, some analysts noted.The webOS is a mobile operating system initially developed by Palm which was acquired by HP last April for 1.2 billion U.S. dollars.In February this year, HP released TouchPad, its first tablet computer which runs the webOS operating system. BEIJING, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- China will launch its first-ever high-resolution geological mapping satellite for civil purposes next January, according to official sources.The Ziyuan III satellite will be launched aboard a Long March 4B carrier rocket from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in northern China's Shanxi province, according to a conference held on Monday for the directors of surveying, mapping and geoinformation administrations across the nation.The Ziyuan III's surveying covers the entire area between 84 degrees north latitude and 84 degrees south latitude.The satellite will be used to conduct geological mapping, carry out surveys on land resources, help with natural disaster-reduction and prevention, and lend assistance to farming, water conservation, urban planning and other sectors.The Ziyuan III satellite project was inaugurated on March 2008, and also includes gravity satellites, radar satellites and follow-up satellites for the Ziyuan III, so as to obtain geoinformation under all kinds of meteorological conditions.
