Commercial real estate leader Steve Schwab is looking to sign tenants to leases at a new development in downtown Denver but he’s running into troubles linked to the pandemic.“COVID has a had a major effect, probably the most major effect in the sales business,” he said.Schwab, a managing principal at Cushman & Wakefield, says COVID-19 has had a major impact on commercial real estate in a short amount of time.“Between the first quarter and the second quarter, we saw office investments sales decrease by about 72%,” he said.Schwab says unemployment, more people working from home and social distancing are impacting commercial real estate sectors like shopping centers, hotels, retail and office spaces.He says that the road to recovery will be very challenging, something other industry experts agree with.“The restaurants, the gyms, the bowling alleys, those are going to struggle over the next 12-18 months until we get back to full physical occupancy,” said Spencer Levy, chairman at CBRE.Levy says high inventory combined with low interest rates could attract foreign investors to American commercial real estate, something he welcomes with open arms.“Foreign money isn’t just cash. It brings everything with it. It brings jobs, it brings foreign students, it brings people that buy retail,” he said.But will foreign investment bring more people back inside massive buildings?Levy compares what today's commercial real estate industry needs to rebound to that of 9/11.“We had a period of time where people were tragically afraid to be back in the cities, afraid to go back into tall buildings. But that passed after people had better security in those buildings,” he said. “We are going to see exactly the same thing today from a wellness prospective.”With many major retailers already moving out of brick and mortar buildings, and millions of square feet available across the country, Levy says the commercial real estate industry needs more government assistance on the road to recovery. 2005

CORONADO, Calif., (KGTV) — Despite recent shark sighting, thousands of people headed to the beach for the pre-holiday weekend. But instead of sharks, dozens of people left the beach after being stung by stingrays.Beautiful Coronado is home to majestic creatures, including great white sharks. "We do think that the great white shark populations are increasing," Heidi Dewar, research biologist at the Southwest Fisheries Science Center said. She believes the population increase is linked to the implementation of fishing regulations in the 1990s. "In 1994, California pushed all the net-based fisheries outside of state water, which is three nautical miles out. And what that did was that basically protected most of the nursery habitat of the juvenile sharks on the coast," Dewar said. "About the same time, the UN banned these high seas directed at fisheries, which were killing some adult white sharks."Last week, two juvenile white sharks were spotted about a half a mile offshore from the Coronado coast. There were no shark attacks like the one last year in Encinitas, where a 13-year-old boy was bitten in the shoulder while lobster spearfishing. Still, the city officials in Coronado notified beachgoers to be on the lookout. That did not stop 11-year-old Tobias Appel from diving in." We just came here to boogie board and have a bunch of fun," Tobias said. He and his family from Phoenix are vacationing in Coronado. They were having a great time until Tobias was stung by a stingray."Today is not my lucky day," Tobias said. This was his first time getting stung by a ray. We met him as he was sticking his foot into a hot water bath at the lifeguard station. "It is under. Right there," he said. In the hour Tobias was at the lifeguard station neutralizing the venom, we saw several others being carried in for emergency treatment. Lifeguards said warm water, low tide, and a packed beach is the perfect formula for a stingray warning. "One of the most amazing things about the ocean is that right there we have wilderness," Dewar said. "And with the wilderness, we have wild animals. So that's definitely a side of the ocean that people need to keep in mind when they go swimming or surfing."Biologists say remember, this summer when you are going to the beach, you are stepping into the animals' homes. So do not forget to be respectful and careful, while you are having fun. Meanwhile, Tobias has one more day in Coronado before he leaves for Phoenix. He hopes to enjoy what he can. (KGTV) -- Dozens of sailors are set to return to North Island Sunday morning following a months-long deployment.Six helicopters and 40 to 50 pilots, aircrew and maintainers from Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 6 will arrive at the Naval Air Station North Island after a six-month deployment.The squadron is part of the San Diego-based Third Fleet and supports aircraft carrier operations with the Fifth Fleet in the Persian Gulf and Seventh Fleet in Japan.Also returning this week in the USS Theodore Roosevelt which will arrive Monday.The aircraft carrier departed in October and made port calls in the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Singapore and the Philippines.   696

(KGTV) -- The City of Coronado has completed a bridge study in an effort prevent suicides on the Coronado Bay Bridge.The study, conducted by Caltrans, shows that two-thirds of those surveyed say they are in favor of adding a physical barrier on the bridge.The study showcases a number of options for adding a barrier, though there are several popular options.RELATED: Caltrans reveals possible suicide barriers for Coronado Bridge?Among the most popular options is a wire mesh fence that would cost up to million. COLLIER COUNTY, Fla — Deputies say a trip to the ice cream store ended with a man getting scooped up by police for DUI.Deputies say 23-year-old Josh Verrot faces several charges, including DUI, battery on a first-responder and fraud. According to a Collier County Sheriff's arrest report, he was arrested Sunday evening outside the Royal Scoop ice cream shop on 8th street in the Vanderbilt Lakes community.Witnesses say that Verrot was driving recklessly in a car with two flat front tires when he pulled into the ice cream shop parking lot and went inside.  As he came out with ice cream, he heard approaching sirens and fled on foot.Deputies located him behind the store and say he refused to do sobriety tests. On the way to the hospital he reportedly bit a firefighter's finger, repeatedly spit toward authorities and yelled “blah-blah-blah” while authorities communicated with him.He also provided his brother's name when asked to identify himself.He's due in court at the end of the month. 1024
