The storm’s worst damage was felt about 100 miles north of Margate where the boardwalk was ripped up and homes were left without power for days, and in some cases, weeks.“After Sandy, it was very easy to compare the areas that had beach replenishments and dunes to those that did not,” said Rosenblatt.But Margate is just an example of several coastal cities around the country that are doing things differently.“As the sea level rises, most people are more worried about what’s going to be underwater. That’s not as important as the flood plane is expanding,” said Galen Newman, associate professor of Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning at Texas A&M. “I think there are many cities exploring options.”After Hurricane Harvey, Houston built more greenspace in its downtown area so water could better drain. On the Texas coast, near Galveston, engineers have been considering a dike to stop flooding. After Hurricane Ike in 2008, the area withstood billions in damages, and experts worry the next strong storm to target the area could cause catastrophic effects to the economy as the area is America's leading producer of petroleum.Furthermore, in parts of Florida, new building codes now mandate buildings withstand winds of up to 130 MPH,, a low-end Category 4 hurricane. They were hoping to see Georgia swing blue by a landslide, but instead were left with sharply divided results for days."You could see it as division, but you can also see it as growth. I see an opportunity for a new nation, a new look, a new energy, the spirit behind the people of this nation, so I see it as opportunity," said Elmore.Elmore and Combs teamed up this year to build that opportunity for change."We have registered thousands, and hundreds of thousands, of new voters that have activated their voices, and to see Georgia be purple, I'm not surprised. I am just excited," said Combs.Tocarro said the excitement after this election is so different from four years ago. "The day after Election Day in 2016, I woke up and I was horrified. I didn't know, especially as a Black woman in this country, what it looked like for me under an administration that was opposite of my values, and I refused to wake up feeling that way this time around, no matter how the results came out," said Combs.This election saw record turnout for African American voters in Georgia, a success Elmore and Combs believe started from the ground up."We have good community leaders that are fighting hard daily, often to make sure that everyone has a fair opportunity. Yes, suppression is still real. It's still prevalent, it still exists, but I am proud to see that there's starting to be some balance, some awareness, being brought to it, and at this point, I could see the light at the end of the tunnel," said Elmore.The slow and steady fight to get people involved in elections exploded this year, a change Elmore is grateful to be part of."I've noticed people more in tune to politics, people that never cared before, so I think it's brought an awakening to the community."It’s these conversations, and the neighborhood movements, energizing communities of color to fight beyond party lines, beyond state lines, for a country where all voices are heard."It's my hope that change is now, and is happening, and is forever going to keep progressing," said Elmore."Together we are the United States of America, does not matter who you voted for. As the NHL went into what it calls “Phase 2” of its plans to resume the 2019-20 season, the league announced that 23 players tested positive for the coronavirus.The 23 players who tested positive is in addition to 12 players who previously tested positive in early June when the league began “Phase 1” of its reopening plan. All told, the league has had 35 players test positive.So far, the league has administered a total of 2,900 tests, with 396 having been tested so far. ASHEVILLE, N.C. – A North Carolina city council unanimously approved a reparations resolution for its Black residents Tuesday.The Asheville City Council voted 7-0 to approve the resolution that formally apologizes for the city’s participation and enforcement of slavery. It also offers an apology for carrying out an urban renewal program that destroyed multiple, successful Black communities.While the resolution provides reparations to the city’s Black residents, it does not mandate direct payments. Instead, the legislation calls for investments in areas where Black citizens face disparities.The resolution, obtained by the Asheville Citizen Times and WHNS, calls for “forming policy and programs that will establish the creation of generational wealth and address reparations due in the black community…” It also encourages state and federal leaders to do the same.The resolution says the resulting budgetary and programmatic priorities may include, “increasing minority home ownership and access to other affordable housing, increasing minority business ownership and career opportunities, strategies to grow equity and generational wealth, closing the gaps in health care, education, employment and pay, neighborhood safety and fairness within criminal justice.”Councilman Keith Young, who spearheaded the initiative, told ABC News that the council was looking to “embed systemic resolutions.” As for a timeline, he said the council "will have some steps to report on within six months and every six months after that.” He added that the work does not end, and it will be adaptive.The Black community makes up about 12% of the city of Asheville, while 83% of residents are white, according to census data. 1721
