BEIJING, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- People's Daily, the official newspaper of the Communist Party of China, said in an editorial that the Shanghai World Expo provided the world with an opportunity to weigh the future at a time when mankind is faced with serious challenges.The editorial, to be carried by the newspaper on Monday, bid farewell to the the 184-day Expo which lowered the curtain on Sunday.The editorial reads, industrial civilization is a double-edged sword, enriching modern lives and bringing challenges at the same time, such as environmental degradation and rapid urbanization, and the Shanghai World Expo made people stop and think about the future.The Shanghai Expo made history, registering over 73 million visitors and 246 participating countries, regions and international organizations, the editorial says.The editorial reads, the Shanghai World Expo is the first exhibition whose theme focused on the city. Though the expo is ending, people's hopes and expectations, pinned on cities, will endure, as will the efforts the international community makes in reaching common ground in a diversified world amidst the concept of sustainable and low-carbon development.

LISBON, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao concluded his state visit to Portugal on Sunday and has left the Portuguese capital of Lisbon for home.The president arrived in Lisbon on Saturday after a three-day state visit to France that began on Thursday.In Lisbon, Hu had talks with Portuguese President Anibal Cavaco Silva and met other Portuguese leaders, exchanging views on how to deepen bilateral pragmatic cooperation. In France, Hu and his French counterpart Nicolas Sarkozy met for talks and agreed to make joint efforts to boost bilateral cooperation.Hu said in the talks that since diplomatic ties were forged 46 years ago, the China-France relationship has been characterized by its strategic and global nature and its ability to move with the times.The Chinese president called on both sides to continuously deepen mutual understanding by carrying out high-level visits and exchanges between governments, legislatures, political parties and regions.Both countries should advance with the times, be creative in practical cooperation, expand trade and try to double their trade volume by 2015, he said.During Hu's visit, China and France signed a host of cooperation agreements covering a wide range of areas, including nuclear energy, aviation, finance, energy efficiency, and environmental protection.On Thursday, China and France issued a joint statement on strengthening their comprehensive strategic partnership.The statement said the two countries should make a major contribution to peace, stability and development of the world, conform to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, promote multilateralism and respect the independent and sovereign choice for the development of each country.Analysts said that the Chinese president's state visits to France and Portugal have promoted not only bilateral cooperation, but also the development of China-Europe ties.

BEIJING, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese leaders have called for harsh punishments and effective precautions to be taken against public officials' dereliction of duty.Both punishment and precautionary measures were important in promoting social harmony and stability, and should be paid equal attention, they stressed.Wu Bangguo, He Guoqiang and Zhou Yongkang, who are members of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks during their visit on Sunday to an exhibition on China's procuratorates' work to fight against crimes of malfeasance and rights infringement.The fight against such crimes was also part of the country's anti-corruption campaign, they said.The leaders also called on government officials and Party cadres to take the lead in upholding China's Constitution and laws and make further efforts to improve their awareness of the rule of law.When dealing with cases of officials' negligent conduct, procuratorial agencies should diligently practice their duty of supervision and strictly enforce the laws for the interest of the people, the leaders said.

  

BEIJING, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Defense Minister Liang Guanglie returned to Beijing Wednesday afternoon after a four-day visit to Vietnam.During his stay in Hanoi, Liang attended the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Defense Ministers' Meeting Plus, where he elaborated on China's defense policy and proposals on regional security cooperation.On the sidelines of the meeting, Liang met with defense chiefs from several countries.During the visit to Vietnam, Liang met with General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee Nong Duc Manh and Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung,respectively.Liang also held talks with Vietnamese Defense Minister Phung Quang Thanh.Liang's entourage also came back to Beijing.
