Former NFL quarterback Johnny Manziel is slated to take his talents north of the border, as Manziel announced on Saturday he has signed a contract with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the CFL. Manziel has faced challenges both on and off the football field since winning the 2012 Heisman Trophy. In 2016, Manziel was charged with domestic violence. Those charges were later dismissed. Also in 2016, Manziel was suspended for four games for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. After an impressive collegiate stint at Texas A&M, Manziel's football career quickly flamed out. Manziel hasn't played professional football since 2015, when he was a member of the Cleveland Browns. Over two seasons, Manziel played in 15 games, and threw seven touchdowns and seven interceptions. "I don't want to wait around any more," Manziel said on Saturday. "I want to get on the field and get in the locker room and get a chance to play ball again. This is the best opportunity for me." Manziel said he is grateful for a second chance at professional football. Manziel is expected not to start at quarterback Hamilton, coach June Jones said. He will compete for the backup job behind former Oregon star Jeremiah Masoli. "Johnny is going to be a competitive player in this league," Jones said. "I feel he'll compete and competition makes everyone better."Manziel said he is ready to move forward and has learned from past missteps. "I have learned a lot from the mistakes. I feel like I wouldn't be where I am today on a personal, on a football level, going back into a locker room, if I didn't go through what I went through," Manziel said. "I am back to a point in my life where I am not taking anything for granted."One name mentioned in Manziel's press conference in Hamilton was Doug Flutie. Both Flutie and Manziel won the Heisman Trophy and went to the CFL after initial struggles in the NFL out of college. Flutie revitalized his career in Canada winning three Grey Cups. When Flutie returned to the NFL, he became a Pro Bowler. While Manziel would like another chance at the NFL, he said he will be with Hamilton for the "long haul."  2253

For the first time, we are hearing from the accused Antioch church shooter. Emanuel Samson is charged with killing one and injuring six others. He's locked up, but makes calls from his cell and all of them are recorded. Nashville-based WTVF obtained an exclusive copy of those recorded calls. They provide a first look at the mindset of an accused murderer. The 25-year-old Samson is being held in the Davidson County Jail. He's said very little to police, but Samson does plenty of talking by phone."This honestly reminds me of our childhood, you know. You're locked in a room or a house. You're locked in a room. You're locked in your house," said Samson in one call, describing jail life.Samson's now spent the past month in the county jail – held without bond – and in this call he seems to be settling in."You know it's about meditating on the fact that I literally can't afford not to be strong. Period. By any means necessary," said Samson. He's made more than 140 calls in the past month, mostly collect to friends and family. It seems he's been warned by his attorney not to talk about his case, though he may at times, speaking in what sounds like his native Sudanese language. However, we did not hear Samson discuss the murder of Melanie Crow Smith or the other felony charges to come. In conversations – especially with a girlfriend – both she and Samson seem oblivious to the seriousness of the charges against him."Please dream about me baby. I dream about you every night," she said. "Aw, baby, we had so many plans for our future. You know?""And we still do. So many plans. Don't say we did because we still do," Samson told her. "I'm trying to keep my mind positive."There were reports that Samson was suicidal in the months before the shooting at Burnette Chapel Church of Christ. In one call, Samson talked about the gunshot wound he suffered to the leg during a scuffle with the church usher. There was a lot of blood. He thought he might die."When that happened? Did you think 'this is it… that I'm leaving,'" asked his girlfriend."Yeah," said Samson."Did it feel good," she asked. "Leaving?""I just think that you… yeah? Um, in a sense. In a way. In terms of pain," said Samson.Investigators have pointed to Samson's troubled past. Samson himself talked about something he called vibrating energies – referring to a depressing childhood."That's how we have these low vibrating energies within us now. The sad. The sorrow. Because we grew up in a very low vibrating household. Always drama," said Samson.Samson also talked about everything from his favorite video games to how a friend was doing in school. Not once do you hear him tell his family or friends he did not commit the crime. The case against Samson is in the hands of the Grand Jury. Federal prosecutors are also still investigating whether this is a hate crime. 2858

For students whose summer plans fell through, organizations across the country are working to make sure internships are still a possibility. The DeBruce Foundation is teaming up with partners to provide students a virtual head start in their careers. The national nonprofit foundation, based in Kansas City, Missouri, works to expand pathways to economic growth and opportunity. One of those ways is student success and internships. However, this summer, they had to pivot their summer plans due to COVID-19.According to Glassdoor, internship hiring fell 39 percent in April 2020 compared to the same time last year."We’re building talent and sometimes it’s talent for today, but sometimes it’s talent for tomorrow," The DeBruce Foundation Senior Director, Robin Smith said. "And so our work pipeline suffers if we don’t have those ways for people to gain work relevant skill. And so it functions on that level and then individuals' level of really connecting talent and opportunity."That's why the foundation is seeking out opportunities, not only to hire their own interns but partnering with area organizations that help students get internships."There are different partners that we work with that they wanted to test and try virtual internships," Smith said. "We were able to provide financial support for them and also different kinds of tools that we use."Hire KC, Startland Internship and Urban Leadership Fellowship are the partners the Foundation is working with and providing funding to allow more students the opportunity for a virtual internship.Alex Oleson, a rising senior at St. Louis University, is The DeBruce Foundation for this summer and says it's been a fairly smooth transition going into a virtual internship after completing online learning for the last three months."In some instances, it does give you a bit more flexibility," Oleson said. "It’s kind of like working from home but I like it and I like that there’s definitely an aspect of dependability."Oleson is studying political science with a minor in economics and urban poverty studies. He said he's been able to delve into various areas with the foundation, including strategic planning, media, marketing and communications and product development, where he's able to provide his insight. The foundation also has a product development lab. Some of their career corps. students participate in a paid, virtual experience to help the foundation with its professional development tools. This story was originally reported by Rae Daniel on kshb.com. 2532

For the second time in recent weeks, President Donald Trump sent well wishes to Ghislaine Maxwell — a known associate of Jeffrey Epstein, who is currently in jail awaiting trial on child sex trafficking charges. In an interview with Axios, which aired on Monday evening, Trump was asked by reporter Jonathan Swan to clarify comments he made during a July 21 press briefing in which he sent well wishes to Maxwell.Trump said he "didn't know" about Maxwell's charges. He added that "her friend or boyfriend" — Epstein — "was killed or committed suicide in jail.""She's now in jail. Yeah, I wish her well," Trump said. "I'd wish a lot of people well. Good luck. Let them prove somebody was guilty." 702

Firefighters in western Colorado hope a winter storm could spell relief from a rash of wildfires that have spread throughout the state this week. But between now and Saturday evening, firefighters will face more warm temperatures and gusty weather, which could fuel the spread of the six major wildfires.Between Wednesday evening and Thursday evening, the East Troublesome Fire exploded in size from 20,000 acres to 170,000 acres — the second-largest in state history.A cold front slowed the spread of that fire on Thursday evening, but hundreds of evacuations remain in place in Grand and Larimer Counties. Rocky Mountain National Park also remains closed due to its proximity to the fire.As of 10:30 a.m. ET, the fire was burning 170,163 acres and was only 5% contained. It's just the latest in a historic wildfire season in the state that has seen the state's four largest wildfires of all time. The East Troublesome Fire is confirmed to have caused "minor" injuries to one firefighter thus far. After a slight warmup early Saturday, another cold front will dip into Colorado that evening and into Sunday morning, bringing a projected five inches of snow to much of the Denver metro area and higher amounts to the west and northwest. While heavy snowfall in the north-central mountains isn't guaranteed to put an end to the East Troublesome, Cameron Peak, Calwood, Lefthand Canyon, Middle and Williams Fork fires, the precipitation will surely give firefighters a spell of relief and allow crews to fight the fires more directly. Before Saturday's cold front, though, crews face more warm, dry weather in the mountains and gusty conditions ahead of the front. Winds could gust up to 50-70 mph along the Berthoud Pass and 20-25 along mountain valleys, creating critical fire conditions again, according to the National Weather Service. The conditions could create rapid fire growth, though the relative humidity should be better Saturday than we've seen this week. When the snow begins Saturday night, up to a foot could fall in some areas of the mountains, and the snow should stick around into Monday, according to the weather service. This story was originally published by Ryan Osborne on KMGH in Denver. 2212
