As baby boomers age, experts expect a major one in three will experience vision loss, a condition linked to depression. It’s a tough transition leaving many in despair. In recent years, Illinois resident Richard Englund’s vision began fading. “It's a whole new world. You know that you're dealing with something you've never dealt with before,” said Englund. Diagnosed with macular degeneration at 47, the world he knew lost focus. He is now legally blind. “The worst thing that you've finally come to terms with is you can't drive anymore,” said Englund. For Angie, a retired nurse, a third failed corneal transplant meant losing her sight but not her sense of humor. “Not being able to see faces. I mean right now all you guys look like Brad Pitt,” said Angie. But it took time for her to come to terms with it. “I felt like I was walking dead,” said Angie. “Somebody hit me in the stomach and it just was wrong.” Loss of mobility and independence is difficult and statistically, people with visual impairment or blindness have a 200 percent increase in the risk of clinical depression. As baby boomers age, the number of Americans with low vision is expected to skyrocket from 2.9 million in 2010 to 5 million in 2030. The key, say public health officials, is to reach out for help early. For the last century, Hadley, a non-profit organization has assisted with the scary transition of losing sight. “We basically teach people how to continue to live their lives,” said Julie Tye, Hadley’s executive director. Hadley is providing online resources, support and in-person consultation. All of it is free of cost. “Maybe it's something as simple as contrast, maybe it's something as simple as using their smartphone to magnify what they're reading,” said Tye. Englund says relearning independence is tough at any age, but not impossible. “I am not going to let the fact that I can't see keep me from doing anything. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is being flooded with a record number of people asking for help. The hotline, which operates 24 hours a day, took in more than 570,000 calls, texts and online chats last year, a jump of more than 30 percent from the year prior. The increase has put a strain on the organization.“When we see spikes like we did last year, we're just not prepared to respond to that kind of growth,” says National Domestic Violence Hotline CEO Katie Ray-Jones. Ray-Jones believes there are a couple reasons for the spike, including the #MeToo Movement, as well as high-profile domestic violence cases like the one involving R&B singer R. Kelly and former White House aide Rob Porter. “We know that people see threads of themselves in that story and it prompts them to either one, recognize ‘I don't want my current situation to turn out like that, so let me reach out for help’ or they're recognizing ‘Gosh, this is really serious and I need to connect to someone right now for help.’” Ray-Jones says the hotline is on track to set another record. A driver who ignored barricades on a Pawnee County Road was hospitalized after his vehicle was swallowed by a sinkhole, authorities say.Four county deputy units and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol responded to the wreck on County Road 5715 just outside the Arkansas River community of Blackburn before 11 p.m. on Wednesday. According to investigators, the man drove around multiple ODOT barricades. A fisherman reportedly witnessed it. The road has broken apart in pieces in recent days, with entire portions of it missing due to massive flooding.The vehicle had to be left in the sinkhole overnight because crews were unable to recover it. They are expected to remove it today.Mercy EMS transported the man, who has not yet been identified, to a Tulsa hospital so he could be treated for head trauma, officials say. According to locals, he had a dog with him, which was not injured.We’re told ODOT immediately was dispatched to place added barricades around the area, which deputies say clearly was blocked when the driver bypassed them.
