As the debate rages nationwide over what to do over a plethora of Confederate monuments, new concern is mounting over a Confederate rally planned for Richmond, Virginia, on Saturday.At the center of the debate is Richmond’s “Monument Avenue,” a collection of statues of Confederate leaders in the former Confederate capital. Back in May, the city’s mayor Levar Stoney said that while he personally believes the monuments are an “endorsement of a shameful past,” he didn’t believe there should be a rush to remove them. He had hoped for a dialogue to take place, and even floated the idea of adding plaques to the statues for more accurate historical context."I think we have an opportunity here in the city to actually be a hub for reconciliation."He created the “Monument Avenue Commission” and even solicited public input in the form of open public meetings. Richmond residents were not shy voicing their opinions.Rita Willis, a former teacher, attended the Aug. 9 public forum to say they are a part of Virginia’s history, whether some like it or not. However she emphasized that if they stay, other statues should be erected that highlight people of other races and ethnicities.George Knight, on the other hand, stood in the auditorium and gave city officials a tongue lashing.“Now is the time to finally get rid of the monuments and replace them with people who actually fought for freedom who actually stood for justice,” Knight said, his voice raising as officials urged him to keep calm. “You lost! Get over it already! Get rid of your participation trophies on monument avenue, get rid of it.”He was met with a spattering of boos as well as cheers.But some attitudes regarding the statues changed following the white nationalist rally last month in Charlottesville, Virginia, which culminated in counter-protestor Heather Heyer losing her life. Stoney is one who’s taken a slightly different position since Charlottesville and believes that perhaps they should now consider taking them down. He wrote in a statement that it had become clear that the statues were being used as a “rallying point for division and intolerance and violence.”The group rallying support around the Robert E. Lee statue on Saturday is a relatively small group out of Tennessee known as “CSA II: The New Confederate States of America.” The group’s president said they were “standing up for their proud heritage” in a nonviolent manner and that any white nationalists or racists who show up to rally with them will not be accepted.He said his message to Richmonders on edge regarding the weekend’s rally is simple: “We are here for peaceful purposes only.”“We will not stand for any violence in Richmond, Virginia.”But the city says they are taking protective measures to be safe. The mayor and police chief announced this week that any objects that can be used as weapons will be prohibited. One type of weapon that won’t be prohibited, however, are guns, as Virginia is an open-carry state.“If you do not respect our city,” Stoney warned, “law enforcement will lock you up."  3084

John McCain, Arizona Republicans are holding a Senate primary Tuesday in which one of the candidates suggested the announcement that McCain was stopping medical treatment was timed to hurt her campaign.Kelli Ward, a former state senator who has courted the far-right during her campaign, suggested on Facebook Saturday that McCain's family released its statement saying the senator was ending medical treatment for brain cancer was timed to hurt her chances of winning Tuesday's primary.Ward staffer Jonathan Williams posted that he wondered whether McCain's statement was released "to take media attention off" Ward's campaign, which was beginning a statewide bus tour. "I'm not saying it was on purpose but it's quite interesting," Williams wrote."I think they wanted to have a particular narrative that they hope is negative to me," Ward responded, according to a screenshot posted by the The Arizona Republic.The news broke that McCain had died hours after Ward's comment. Authorities in Costa Rica say that a body has been found on the Airbnb property where missing Florida woman, 36-year-old Carla Stefaniak, was staying.Costa Rica's Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ) tells WFTS that the body was buried in a mountainous area located in the back of the property, less than 200 feet away from where Stefaniak had been staying. OIJ agents had been searching the area with specialized dogs. At this time, authorities have not been able to confirm that the body is Stefaniak.In Spanish, Walter Espinoza, the director general of the OIJ said, “the body was in a state of decomposition but the preliminary observation does verify the body is a woman.”In a press conference on Monday, Espinoza said that biological fluids consistent with blood were discovered inside the Airbnb property. The blood has been sent to labs for testing.The body cannot be positively identified by officials until an autopsy is performed.Stefaniak hasn't been seen or heard from since Tuesday, November 27. She traveled to Costa Rica with her sister-in-law, April Burton, on November 22 to celebrate her birthday. Burton flew back on November 27. Stefaniak had plans to return to the United States on November 28, bound for Florida, but never arrived for her flight. She checked into her Airbnb, located at Calle Hoja Blanca in San Antonio de Escazú, for one night on November 27. According to Burton, the last thing they knew about Stefaniak was that she was inside that Airbnb on the night of November 27. The last time Burton spoke to Stefaniak, she told her that it was raining crazy and the power went out. She continued with, "it's pretty sketchy here," according to Burton.The final photograph Stefaniak sent family members was from inside the Airbnb. Family members shared the image with WFTS, seen below.</p><p>"The guards (at the apartment complex that housed the Airbnb) told us that she left at 5 in the morning with all of her bags and got into an Uber. AZUSA (CNS) - A homeless man suspected of intentionally starting the Ranch 2 Fire in Azusa surrendered to authorities Sunday, while firefighters endured another day battling the blaze amid scorching temperatures.The fire, which grew to 2,256 acres overnight, was just 7% contained Sunday.The man suspected of intentionally starting the fire, 36-year-old Osmin Palencia, was in custody at the Azusa Police Department jail. Police did not release further information except to say that the investigation was still active, and urged anyone with information about the fire's origin to call 626- 812-3200.On Saturday, police said Palencia was believed to have a connection to the Monrovia area and possibly a woman known as "Madonna Ortiz." They added he is violent and has multiple active arrest warrants.Palencia also had four misdemeanor arrests over the last two years, three by Azusa police and one by sheriff's deputies, according to jail records.Palencia's last known residence is an encampment in the Azusa Canyon Riverbed, police said.A witness who lives in a riverbed near Mountain Cove told NBC4 an argument between two homeless men sparked the fire."There were two gentlemen in the back (of a homeless encampment) fighting and they were arguing over a bike and one guy said he'd burn the other guy out, and things got escalated to where the fire started," evacuee Jimmy Pockets told the station.
