OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) -- An Army veteran sprang into action when he witnessed a man attacking another man at an Oceanside transit station.Oceanside police said the incident happened Tuesday at around 9:30 a.m. on the Amtrak platform at the transit station on 195 S Tremont St.Police said Craig Chaviez allegedly attacked and stabbed a 30-year-old man. When another man -- identified as 40-year-old Andrew Reinicke, tried to intervene, police alleged Chaviez punched him in the ribs and stabbed him in the head area.Reinicke was ready to take a train to culinary school in Pasadena when the incident occurred. The Army veteran told ABC 10News’ Michael Chen that he was dressed in his "chef whites" and reading some notes just before the attack.“A guy rushed up, jumped on top of him and started wailing on him,” Reinicke said of the victim.Reinicke said as the fight escalated, that’s when he decided to get involved.“You see someone who needs defending and you do it. You don’t necessarily choose to do it, you just do it,” said Reinicke.After jumping into the fray and tussling with the attacker, Reinicke said the man pulled out a small knife.“He was punching me in the eye, the ribs, and the face. He comes at me again, throws me to the ground and tries to stab me as often as he can. He ends up getting me right in the head,” Reinicke said.Reinicke told ABC 10News that the knife “did pierce the skull” and he suffered a “little bit of bleeding on the brain.” He said his adrenaline was pumping so he did not feel any pain initially.According to Reinicke, the attacker then accused him and the first victim of robbing him before walking towards buses.Witnesses said Chaviez tried to flee from the scene, but he was arrested a short time later.Oceanside police said the 25-year-old Chaviez, who is from Inglewood, was a fugitive wanted in Los Angeles County over an aggravated assault and assault with a deadly weapon case. OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) — 79 years after the surprise attack at Pearl Harbor that brought the United States into World War Two, there are few survivors remaining. However, the memories of that day are crystal clear for 101-year-old Oceanside resident George Coburn.“One of the things I’ll always remember is the time I spent swimming after the Oklahoma turned over," Coburn said during an interview with ABC 10News. "I thought about a lot of things when I was in the water there.”Coburn was aboard the battleship USS Oklahoma on December 7th, 1941. He was working to prepare for a major inspection that was scheduled for the following day. Rumors began circulating belowdecks that the base was under attack. The rumor was confirmed just a few minutes later. "“I still remember the announcement. It was was rather unique. 'Real planes. Real bombs. No [expletive]'The Oklahoma took several hits from Japanese torpedoes. As the battleship began to sink, hundreds of sailors were trapped, including Coburn. He managed to wedge himself out through a porthole. "If I had been a little bit bigger, it would have been a hell of a tough job.”Coburn plummeted several feet into the water below. He found himself surrounded by burning shrapnel. However, he says the most terrifying danger was the continuous fire from Japanese fighters. “I could see the little geysers of machine gun bullets hitting the water.”After a few minutes in the water, Coburn managed to find the rope tying the Oklahoma to the neighboring USS Maryland. He climbed the rope aboard the Maryland and survived the remainder of the attack.Coburn went on to serve in many of the biggest naval actions of the war. He was awarded the Purple Heart after being struck by several pieces of shrapnel during the Battle of Okinawa. Do to a Navy paperwork error, Coburn was never given eight other medals from his service. He finally received the medals in 2019, after a campaign by a Palomar College historian and the intervention of Congressman Mike Levin. Coburn said it did not bother him that it took so long. “I knew what I’d done and where I’d been. The medals didn’t change that a particle.” 2158

OCILLA, Ga. — A nurse at an immigration detention center in Georgia says authorities performed questionable hysterectomies, refused to test detainees for COVID-19 and shredded medical records.Advocacy group Project South has filed a complaint with the Homeland Security Department's internal watchdog that relies heavily on the nurse's words.That nurse, Dawn Wooten, worked at the Irwin County Detention Center in southern Georgia. In addition to holding detainees for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, it also serves those arrested by the U.S. Marshals and the Irwin County Sheriff's Department.In her complaint, Wooten called a gynecologist who works outside the facility, "the uterus collector." She claimed that nearly every inmate who saw the doctor received a hysterectomy and claimed the doctor removed the "wrong ovary" on at least one patient.Wooten said it was unclear if the patients — particularly immigrant women — knowingly agreed to the procedure, which would prevent them from having children in the future.She says she saw a sick-call nurse shred a box of detainee complaints without looking at them.Wooten claimed she was eventually fired from the facility for raising concerns about COVID-19. She said she was demoted after she missed time for presenting symptoms of the virus.She claims that inmates were likely infected with the virus at a rate much higher than reported because the facility declined to use two rapid-testing COVID-19 machines.
