CANBERRA, May 15 (Xinhua) -- Visiting General Guo Boxiong, vice-chairman of China's Central Military Commission, and Australian Minister for Defense John Faulkner have vowed to strengthen exchanges between the armed forces of China and Australia.China and Australia shared common interests and desire in ensuring the peace, stability and development of the Asia-Pacific region, said a joint statement released by Guo and Faulkner Friday.The two sides hailed the development of their military-to-military relationship in recent years and said positive outcomes had been achieved through senior visits and exchanges in education, training and technical areas.Both sides agreed that strengthening open dialogue on defense and security issues between Australia and China was conducive to promoting bilateral relations.The statement said China and Australia were both pleased with the outcomes of the current visit and the opportunity it provided to further strengthen bilateral ties and military exchanges.The Sino-Australia defense relationship was an important part of bilateral ties and both sides would work concertedly to sustain sound and stable development in this regard, it said.Both countries should respect and take into full consideration each other's core interests and major concerns, and develop ties on the basis of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit, the statement said. It said the two sides had also agreed to carry out more top-level visits to further promote mutual trust and discuss ways to boost the transparency of defence policies.Both sides said maritime security was crucial in keeping maritime trade routes open, and agreed to organize a joint maritime exercises with naval ship visits in the future and to continue exchanges on humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.The two countries agreed to enhance exchanges between the two armies and to push ahead exchanges of mid-level and junior officers in such areas as information sharing, peace-keeping, medical treatment and sports.Guo arrived in Australia on Tuesday for a four-day official goodwill visit at the invitation of Faulkner. SHENZHEN, May 22 (Xinhua) -- Preliminary investigation shows that factors including failed romance, unrestrained gambling could be the reasons behind suicide of a Foxconn Technology Group employee Friday, said police authorities in south China's Shenzhen City.Nan Gang, 21, climbed to the top of a factory building in Foxconn's industrial complex in Longhua Township and fell to his death at 4:37 a.m., said Huang Jianwei, a spokesman of the Bao'an Police Station, of the Shenzhen Public Security Bureau.Nan's suspected suicide was the 10th of the kind ever happening at the Foxconn's Shenzhen plant since the beginning of the year.Police said they learned from investigations that Nan Gang's parents were divorced and Nan was the only child of the family. Nan's ex-girlfriend got married this year in February, and his new girlfriend also deserted him early this month.Nan was said to be ill tempered and fond of gambling, and was thus in deep debts before his death.According to the police, not long ago, Nan had fights with his co-workers, so he employed others to beat the co-workers, but was later blackmailed by the same group of people.Nan allegedly had said he would take revenge and even showed his intent to commit suicide before he fell off the building Friday.Police have already captured the suspects for blackmailing Nan pending further investigation.Shenzhen-based Foxconn's company profile on its website says it's the world's top electronics manufacturer with more than 600,000 employees and ranked 109 among the Fortune 500 companies in 2009. It is linked to Taiwan electronics giant Hon Hai Group.

UNITED NATIONS, April 14 (Xinhua) -- Representatives from UN Security Council members and other countries on Wednesday sent their deep condolences to the Chinese government and people for a strong earthquake that hit the northwestern part of the country and killed at least 589 people.The diplomats from nearly 40 countries and the European Union offered their condolences to China when they were taking the floor at an open Council debate on the situation in the Middle East, which kicked off here Wednesday morning. The representatives were from the only countries which inscribed to speak at the open debate.Representatives from Austria, Bosnia, Brazil, Britain, France, Gabon, Japan, Lebanon, Nigeria, Russia and the United States offered their condolences to the Chinese delegation for the 7.1-magnitude earthquake, which struck northwest China's Qinghai Province early Wednesday.Condolences were also from such countries as Afghanistan, Argentina, Botswana, Cuba, Egypt, Iran, Kenya, Kuwait, Nicaragua, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Syria, Tunisia and Venezuela.Earlier, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and president of the UN General Assembly Ali Treki also sent their deep condolences to China over the strong earthquake.At least 589 people have reportedly died and 10,000 others were injured in the wake of the deadly earthquake, local authorities said.
