The Senate has approved a ban on the sale of tobacco products to anyone under the age of 21 as part of a spending bill to keep the government funded. The measure had already been approved by the House. The restriction on tobacco sales has long been a push by a somewhat odd compilation of members, ranging from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell a Kentucky Republican, and Republican Sens. Mitt Romney of Utah and Todd Young of Indiana, and some of the chamber's top Democrats, including Sens. Richard Durbin of Illinois, Tim Kaine of Virginia and Brian Schatz of Hawaii. Those lawmakers have been looking for a means to get the prohibition across the finish line, and now they've found one by attaching it to a must-pass series of bills to avoid a government shutdown. The increased age restriction for tobacco purchases is one of several provisions outside the spending measures themselves that will be attached to the broader .4 trillion spending agreement and likely become federal law. 1005

he players has mild symptoms and is in isolation. "An Ottawa Senators player has tested positive for the COVID-19 virus," the team said in a statement. "The player has had mild symptoms and is in isolation."The Ottawa Senators are in the process of notifying anyone who has had known close contact with the athlete and are working with our team doctors and public health officials. As a result of this positive case, all members of the Ottawa Senators are requested to remain isolated, to monitor their health and seek advice from our team medical staff."The health of our players, fans, and community remains our highest priority. We will continue to do everything we can to help ensure our players, staff, fans and the greater community remain safe and healthy during this time of uncertainty due to the spread of the coronavirus."The NHL suspended operations last Thursday as leagues across North America canceled or postponed contests. The league sent out guidance on Monday saying it hopes to resume practice in early May and restart action in mid May. The Senators' announcement came on the same day the Brooklyn Nets of the NBA said that four of its players tested positive for the virus. The total number of NBA cases is at seven. 1440

This is the time for Mexico, with the help of the United States, to wage WAR on the drug cartels and wipe them off the face of the earth. We merely await a call from your great new president!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) November 5, 2019 256

The Trump administration on Monday said the entire Affordable Care Act should be struck down, in a dramatic reversal. In a filing with a federal appeals court, the Justice Department said it agreed with the ruling of a federal judge in Texas that invalidated the Obama-era health care law.In a letter Monday night, the administration said "it is not urging that any portion of the district court's judgment be reversed.""The Department of Justice has determined that the district court's comprehensive opinion came to the correct conclusion and will support it on appeal," said Kerri Kupec, spokesperson for the Justice Department. It's a major shift for the Justice Department from when Jeff Sessions was attorney general. At the time, the administration argued that the community rating rule and the guaranteed issue requirement -- protections for people with pre-existing conditions -- could not be defended but the rest of the law could stand. After the Justice Department took that position, federal District Judge Reed O'Connor struck down the entire law and the case is currently before a federal appeals court. The Trump administration would not defend the law in court so a coalition of 21 Democratic states led by California stepped in."This lawsuit is as dangerous as it is reckless. It threatens the healthcare of tens of millions of Americans across the country -- from California to Kentucky and all the way to Maine," said California Attorney General Xavier Becerra in a statement. "The Affordable Care Act is an integral part of our healthcare system. ... Because no American should fear losing healthcare, we will defend the ACA every step of the way." 1677
