SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The ride-hailing company Lyft announced an expansion Wednesday of its pilot program at Camp Pendleton that streamlines access to the U.S. Marine Corps base for military members, their families and civilians who work at the military installation.Lyft launched the pilot program in collaboration with Marine Corps Community Services last year to make it easier for people living on the base to book a ride with a company like Lyft or Uber, which previously required security clearance to enter the base. The ``Base Mode'' feature is now integrated into the app, automatically matching base residents with eligible drivers.In addition, a new state law allows active-duty military members and their families to drive for companies like Uber or Lyft in California with a valid driver's license from any U.S. state. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt will change its home port from San Diego to Bremerton, Washington, ahead of scheduled maintenance slated for next summer, the Navy announced Wednesday.The ship, which is currently deployed in the Western Pacific, will enter Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for scheduled maintenance known as docking planned incremental availability, or DPIA.Lt. Travis Callaghan said the maintenance required to maintain the Nimitz-class carrier's service life is more involved than what can be done pier- side in San Diego. DPIA involves putting the ship in drydock and will require facilities, equipment and personnel available in Bremerton, Callaghan said.The carrier recently resumed its scheduled deployment in the Indo- Pacific after spending months docked in Guam due to the widespread COVID-19 outbreak aboard the ship.The ship originally departed San Diego on Jan. 17 for a deployment, but was diverted to Guam on March 27 when the outbreak took hold, ultimately infecting more than 1,100 sailors, and killing one, Chief Aviation Ordnanceman Charles Thacker, 41.Navy officials said the carrier now operates with a new COVID-19 standard operating procedure, which modifies how crew members move through the ship, expands meal hours and establishes new social distancing procedures. 1337

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Prior to today's San Diego County Credit Union Holiday Bowl, the Port of San Diego will host the annual Solar Turbines 5K run/walk and the Holiday Bowl Parade along Harbor Drive.The Port will host the 24th annual Solar Turbines 5K run and walk at 9:45 a.m. and the parade at 10 a.m. Participants in the 5K will run and walk from the corner of Harbor Drive and Ash Street to Ruocco Park. The parade will begin in front of the County Administration Building and process south down Harbor Drive to its intersection with Pacific Highway.According to Port officials, the parade will include 29 giant balloons, 10 marching bands and multiple floats and drill teams. The marching bands from Northwestern University and the University of Utah, the two teams playing in the Holiday Bowl, will perform during the parade."The Port of San Diego Holiday Bowl Parade is one of the Port's signature events, bringing approximately 100,000 spectators, including many from out of state, to the beautiful San Diego bayfront," said Board of Port Commissioners Chairman Rafael Castellanos. "Let's not forget we opened an unused county building for a shelter because immigration authorities were releasing asylum- seeking families on our streets without providing them any resources. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego chapter of the Surfrider Foundation announced Tuesday that it sent more than 2,200 letters from county residents to federal, state and local leaders calling for the prioritization of addressing toxic waste and pollution in the Tijuana River and coastal waters in south county.The organization said it sent letters to, among other people, President Donald Trump, Gov. Gavin Newsom, senators Kamala Harris and Dianne Feinstein, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Office of International and Tribal Affairs Assistant Administrator William Charles "Chad" McIntosh, the county Board of Supervisors and the entirety of San Diego County's congressional delegation.The letters include a call to clean up contaminated water in the Tijuana River and near the U.S.-Mexico border that has resulted in closure of the Tijuana Slough and Imperial Beach shorelines for 190 days and 50 days, respectively, so far this year. Those numbers are likely to increase as rainfall later in the year typically exacerbates any contamination.The organization and the letters also call on the federal government to include Clean Water Act provisions in the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, a replacement trade deal for the North American Free Trade Agreement that went into effect in 1994."During the month of September there have been four transboundary flow reports issued by the International Boundary and Water Commission, totaling about 120 million gallons of treated and untreated wastewater that funneled into the Tijuana River and into the Pacific Ocean," the organization said in a statement.Transborder pollution from the Tijuana River has contaminated U.S. waters and coastlines for decades, forcing the county to regularly close beach access near the border. During that time, local and state officials and environmental activists have called for federal assistance to protect the health of the environment and residents near the border.In July, Reps. Juan Vargas, D-San Diego; Scott Peters, D-San Diego; and Mike Levin, D-Oceanside, introduced legislation to increase funding for Tijuana River clean-up efforts and prevention of future pollution. In April, Harris and Feinstein submitted a jointly written letter to multiple federal agencies requesting they address sewage runoff in the river.Surfrider and the city of San Diego have also filed lawsuits against the U.S. section of the International Boundary and Water Commission, which oversees waterways that traverse the border. The lawsuits argue that the UBWC has neglected pollution in the river and its effect on the environment."Now is the time to continue to elevate this dire issue," said Bethany Case, co-lead of the organization's Clean Border Water Now campaign.
