SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — According to the San Diego Council on Literacy, 560,000 adults in the county read at a fourth grade level or less. Individuals with limited reading skills will have a hard time finding employment and suffer even more financially. That's why leaders in literacy are trying to encourage children to develop a love for reading before the age of 8, and before it's too late. Amelia Sandoval is a prime example of how things can spiral out of control without the ability to read. "I didn't read, not at all," says Sandoval talking about her childhood. There were problems at home. She was never read to, and school was never a priority. "We learned to ditch the cops." By the time she was 18, Amelia was in the state prison for women in Chowchilla, where she spent five years. Her inability to read was her shame, and a secret she kept to herself."Just as good as I was at stealing stuff, I was good at hiding this," says Sandoval wiping away tears. "I had to protect the secret. It was the best secret I kept from everybody."But experts claim Amelia's path in life is one that's completely avoidable."60 percent of low-income children have no books at home," says Jose Cruz. He's desperate to get books in the hands of children. "We're focusing on ages 0 to 8 or 9 because we know that that's the best place for us to make an investment," adds Cruz. Cruz and the Council on Literacy are encouraging children to read at least 20 minutes a night at home. And here's an example they like to share. "Student A" who reads just 20 minutes a day will read the equivalent of 1.8 million words in a school year, building an extensive vocabulary. But "Student B" who reads only five minutes a day will have read less than 2 percent of that amount. And "Student C" who only reads a minute a day is severely limited in vocabulary and literacy. "You just need to read and talk with your kids," says Cherissa Kreider-Beck. She is unwavering in her claim that literacy starts at home and has recommended book lists. "At the state, we're about 50 percent, so the county outperforms the state a little bit, but those numbers aren't okay. We can't be okay with those results." "If a child is not reading at grade level by age 8 or 9, the odds of them catching up are 3-1 against them," adds Cruz. With the help of the San Diego Council on Literacy, Amelia has learned to read. "It's very emotional," says Sandoval, unable to hold back tears. "So, it's made me really happy in life."Amelia graduated from high school in February and is now studying for her certification test to enter the field of cyber security."It's amazing because I always thought I would be in prison," says Sandoval. "I never saw a brighter future. I didn't think I would make it this far. I always thought I would end up dead. Or like I said, forever in prison. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A successful regular season could mean some end-of-the-year award hardware for members of the San Diego Padres.On Monday, the Baseball Writers’ Association of America (BBWAA) revealed the finalists for National League Most Valuable Player, Rookie of the Year, and Manager of the Year.Manny Machado is among the finalists for National League MVP. The Padres’ star third baseman, Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts, and Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman are all in the running for the award.Noticeably absent from the finalists list is Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr., who was considered among the favorites for the MVP award throughout the season.The last Padres player to be named NL MVP was Ken Caminiti in 1996.The NL Rookie of the Year finalists include Padres second baseman Jake Cronenworth, Alec Bohm of the Phillies, and Devin Williams of the Brewers.If Cronenworth wins the award, he would be the first Padres ROY winner since catcher Benito Santiago in 1987.The Padres’ first-year manager, Jayce Tingler, was named a finalist for the NL’s Manager of the Year award. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego pastor is reflecting Wednesday on his special personal connection with Reverend Billy Graham, who passed away at his home in North Carolina from natural causes at the age of 99.Early in his career in 1949, Graham delivered a sermon at the Forest Home Christian Camp in the San Bernardino Mountains.  Bob Botsford's father ran the camp. Nearly two decades later during one of Graham's return visits to the camp - an excited, 5-year-old Bob interrupted his sermon."I remember yelling out 'Hi Billy!' And he yelled back, 'Hi Bobby,'" said Botsford.By then, Graham had become a family friend."I recall bigger-than-life charisma.  He was the most gentle soul and most humble man I've ever met in my life.  He was bold yet caring," said Botsford.Botsford says Graham inspired him to become a pastor at age 24."His invitation was for a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and that's what I longed for," said Botsford.Later, it was Botsford who flew to a revival in Kentucky to personally invite Graham to return to San Diego. His last revival was in San Diego almost 30 years before. "He said, 'Let's see if we can make that happen," said Botsford.It did.  In May 2003, a record-breaking crowd packed Qualcomm Stadium to hear him speak."It was electric and just filled with hope," said Botsford.After the event, there was a surprise in the mail.  Botsford received a bible from Graham in the mail, which included a message: "Bob Botsford. God Bless You and Keep You.  Amen.  Billy Graham.""Definitely one of my most treasured possessions," said Botsford.A decade and a half later, he must say goodbye to his friend."I'm sad for the world because we lost the greatest communicator of the gospel, but I'm happy for heaven because Billy is finally home," said Botsford.Botsford is also remembering a legacy.  At Qualcomm Stadium that day, his own son met Graham."I saw my son's eyes light up," said Botsford.The meeting inspired his son, who is now a youth pastor at Botsford's church, Horizon Christian Fellowship in Rancho Santa Fe."Third generation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A young woman was hit by an egg while walking to her car in Carmel Valley and could lose sight in her left eye permanently due to the prank, according to what her doctor told her.Meghan Campbell, 25, was visiting friends on Sunday the 19th, at their home near Torrey Pines High School. Around 9:45 p.m. she was walking ahead of her friends to her car when a dark SUV drove by and someone inside hurled an egg at her."It was freaking terrifying," she said Wednesday, still shaken by the incident. "Soon as it hit me I kneeled down to figure out what was going on." Her thoughts were racing, "I can't see, there's something gooey on my face right now."It can sound like a funny prank, and Campbell chooses to find the humor in it now, but what doctors told her at the hospital was life-altering.She said doctors told her that her left cornea was scratched and orbital bones were fractured."I think the most scary thing for me was my vision went out... and I couldn't start seeing light or anything until the next day," Campbell said.She saw an Ophthalmologist Tuesday and she said he told her it will take six weeks to find out if her vision will come back. He said there are no options for surgery or medication because of the level of trauma to her eye. Her left pupil has remained dilated more than a week after the incident.She said she's still having trouble with light sensitivity, depth perception, and overall vision. "Someone with 20/20 vision can stand 200 feet away from something and see it clear, I have to stand 20 feet away to see the same thing," she said.She was visiting her friends from Orange County when the incident happened. Wednesday she was at the airport waiting for a flight back to Kentucky where she's studying to become an ER doctor. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An arrest has been made in connection with a fatal hit-and-run Sunday in Sherman Heights, San Diego Police have confirmed to 10News.On Sunday, a silver SUV was traveling eastbound in the 1800 block of Market Street at about 2 a.m. when the vehicle hit a pedestrian. Family members have identified the victim as 41-year-old Jason Gordon.It's still not clear if Gordon was standing in the street or crossing lanes, police said. The driver fled the scene after fatally hitting the man.Police Tuesday released photos of the man they believed to be the suspect of the crash visiting Humberto’s Taco Shop on the corner of Broadway and 25th Street, where he ordered food. The cashier who took the man's order said it appeared that the man had been drinking that night.RELATED: Pedestrian struck, killed by hit-and-run motorist in San DiegoPolice say the photos from the taco shop and photos from Smart Street Lights near the crash scene led them to the home of 28-year-old Christopher Nunez, where they also located the suspected vehicle, a 2008 GMC Envoy.
