TUCSON, Ariz. — A team of researchers at the University of Arizona believe they've found an important clue in the fight against an aggressive form of brain cancer.Glioblastoma is the cancer that killed Sen. John McCain in August and Sen. Ted Kennedy in 2009.People are diagnosed with glioblastoma live, on average, for another 11 to 15 months. Very few survive the disease, so the group of researchers wanted to know why some patients live longer than others.Professor of Radiation Oncology, Dr. Baldassarre Stea, says the clue lies in the RNA of short and long-term patients. The team looked at the genetic variation in about three dozen patients. What they found is a gene called WIF1 is distinctly higher in patients who survive longer, according to Dr. Stea. Those who lack the gene succumb to the disease much quicker. 849

VALLEY CENTER, Calif. (KGTV) - Family members are mourning the loss of Roland Escarcega Jr., a father of five and an apparent victim of those deadly blue pills. When Shonta Chaloux last saw his cousin, Escarcega was his usual jovial self."We were joking. I gave him a hard time, and he gave me a hard time," said Chaloux. Two months later, Chaloux got the news."Devastated, sad ... it was a family member who found him at his home," said Chaloux.Escarcega, 39, was found dead in his bed in late July at his home on the San Pasqual Indian Reservation after Escarcega, who worked for the tribe's water department, hadn't shown up for work. Chaloux doesn't know all the details, but says his cousin is one of the victims of the deadly pills mentioned in a sheriff's department warning."Assuming whoever went into his room and what was recovered matches what was found in the other victim's homes," said Chaloux. In late July, deputies said blue counterfeit Oxycodone pills, likely laced with Fentanyl, caused four overdose deaths in 36 hours. Chaloux says his cousin was among those who died during those 36 hours. Chaloux did not know his cousin was taking painkillers or who may have supplied them. "Whoever cut those pills, they deserve to go to prison. They are killing people," said Chaloux.Chaloux is hoping by sharing Escarcega's story, he can help other families."Listen to family members if they are struggling and see what they're struggling with," said Chaloux. For those who turn to the streets for pain relief, he has this message. "Don't do it. You're playing Russian Roulette with your own life," said Chaloux.Escarcega's funeral will be held Tuesday. When 10news asked the sheriff's department about arrests in the case, a spokesperson said in a statement, "Due to the sensitive nature of the investigation, they aren't releasing any information at this time. As soon as we have something to release, we will let you know." 1941

VALLEJO, Calif. (KGTV) -- The woman who was abducted and raped in 2015 spoke to ABC News after authorities dismissed her kidnapping as a hoax."I don't know how to describe what it's like to sit back silently and watch the world have a conversation ... on the most horrific thing that you've lived through," Denise Huskins said in an interview with ABC News.Huskins was kidnapped from her boyfriend's bed before being drugged, bound and raped. She was released two days later.RELATED: Couple in bizarre kidnapping case settle with city of Vallejo for .5M?Following the kidnapping, the Vallejo Police Department said: “none of the claims has been substantiated.”Police then accused the couple of taking valuable resources away from the community in the case that would become known as the “Gone Girl” kidnapping.A later attempted kidnapping led to the arrest of Matthew Muller, 38.Muller is serving a 40-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to the kidnapping. He is also facing new charges, including rape.Last week, Huskins and her now fiancé, Aaron Quinn, settled a civil lawsuit with the department for .5 million. 1133
