SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Imagine having the power to change your body’s temperature at any time, regardless of how hot or cold it actually is. UC San Diego engineers are on they’re way to doing just that, with a wearable patch.Like a thermostat, it can be changed to a specific temperature, warming or cooling the body, using far less energy than an air conditioning system. “Cooling is a really important issue faced by society today. If you look at news reports there are extreme weather conditions, for example in India, peak temperature could be over 50 degrees Celsius in July," said Renkun Chen, a Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at UC San Diego.The patch is made up of thermoelectric alloys - materials that use electricity to create a temperature difference and vice versa - sandwiched between stretchy elastomer sheets. The device physically cools or heats the skin to a temperature that the wearer chooses. The patch is powered by a flexible battery pack. It is made of an array of coin cells all connected by spring-shaped copper wires and embedded in a stretchable material. The system also includes a stretchable circuit board.By regulating the temperature around an individual person, rather than a large room, the smart fabric could potentially cut the energy use of buildings and homes by at least 15 percent.The technology could also be used for people who work in extreme environments, like firefighters or miners. Eventually, Chen and his team want to integrate the technology into clothing. They hope to sell it commercially in the next few years, along with developing a mobile app to control the temperature. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Jayce Tingler doesn't plan to be a homebody in the San Diego Padres clubhouse."I want to be shagging in the outfield ... If you're out being active, more organic natural moments will arrive," Tingler told reporters, saying that he doesn't plan to sit in his office often.The Padres introduced the former Texas Rangers coach to the media at Petco Park Thursday. In front of a backdrop of brown and gold, general manager A.J. Preller spoke on Tingler's experience and confidence in him managing the team starting in 2020. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- La Mesa residents and local business supporters didn't waste time rebuilding their community Sunday morning following a long night of violent protests that left several cars and buildings destroyed.Good Samaritans armed with brooms and paint brushes worked quickly to restore walls inscribed with graffiti and sweep streets strewn with debris.Only hours earlier, hundreds of rioters descended on the small La Mesa Village business district setting fire to numerous vehicles and buildings including a bank, and looting business."Our small businesses are devastated and many were already on the brink due to COVID19. La Mesa Village has been the heart of small business in the city and is a beautiful place for dining, events and memories," wrote Phil Ortiz on a fundraiser page.Ortiz'a gofundme page has already received over ,000 in donations. The goal is to raise ,000."All proceeds will go directly to small businesses that were destroyed or damaged," Ortiz wrote on the page.Saturday's protests started with a mostly peaceful march that drew over a thousand protesters. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In a move to help shed the mounting costs of a real estate deal gone wrong, the City of San Diego says it is stopping lease payments on the sharply criticized 101 Ash Street building.The city sent a letter to Cisterra Development, which brokered the real estate deal, that it will be "suspending further lease payments for the 1010 Ash Street building," starting with the Sept. 1 payment. The letter adds that the city will not be making any lease payments "until these issues are fairly resolved.""The City has lost use of the building due, in part, to direct physical loss and damage to the premises, including widespread and negligent disturbance of asbestos," the city's letter reads.RELATED: Options and possible consultation costs for vacant buildingThe property at 101 Ash St. has sat vacant in downtown San Diego for most of the last four years. As it remains empty and unused, taxpayers are paying a daily bill to the tune of ,000.The city intended to move 1,100 city employees into the building, but officials soon discovered problem after problem to the site's 19 floors. In December 2019, the city finally moved workers in, only to vacate them a month later when the county detected traces of asbestos.The building was purchased by the city in 2016 in an approved lease-to-own agreement valued at million.RELATED: City leaders vote for updates on 101 Ash Street as costs mountLast month, a letter obtained by ABC 10News showed the city was considering proposals for additional services including bare requirements to reoccupy the building, fire/life/safety recommendations, and potentially demolishing and replacing the existing building. It appears you have documents that are not final and should not be treated as such."In August, City Council leaders voted 5-4 to request monthly updates on the status of the building and costs for several next steps options by Mayor Kevin Faulconer's office, including putting millions of dollars more into the building for the needed repairs, buying out the lease, pursuing a new landlord, trying to renegotiate its lease, or walking away entirely.
