BEIJING, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao will meet with his U.S. counterpart, Barack Obama, at the 19th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Informal Leadership Meeting, said China's Assistant Foreign Minister, Wu Hailong, on Monday.He said the APEC summit will be held from Nov. 12 to 13 in Hawaii, with the theme of "seamless regional economy."According to Wu, speaking at a Foreign Ministry media briefing, Hu will attend the "APEC Leaders' Informal Meeting, Leaders' Dialogue with Representatives from APEC Business Advisory Council, and APEC CEO Summit."China hopes the APEC members will implement the economic growth strategy agreed last year, striving to achieve a balanced, inclusive, sustainable, innovative and safe economic growth, said Wu.China expects the APEC members to comprehensively promote regional trade and investment liberalization, he said, adding that all member states should fulfill their commitments and oppose all forms of trade protectionism.Wu said APEC should strengthen economic and technical cooperation to enhance the development ability of the developing members, and therefore to achieve common prosperity."APEC members generally hold positive attitudes toward U.S. proposals in various fields such as green growth, innovation policy. MOSCOW, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- A Soyuz-2.1B rocket carried a Glonass-M navigation satellite into orbit early Monday after a two-day delay caused by high winds, a Russian Space Forces spokesman said."The launch of the booster rocket is as scheduled. The satellite Glonass-M was put into the orbit under control at 03:55 Moscow time (2355 GMT on Sunday)," said Colonel Alexei Zolotukhin.Zolotukhin told reporters that the rocket was launched at 0:15 Moscow time (2015 GMT, Sunday) from the Plesetsk Space Center in northern Russia.The Russian Space Forces said the launch was initially scheduled for Saturday but was postponed due to high winds.Glonass is the Russian equivalent of the U.S. Global Positioning System (GPS), which is designed for both military and civilian use. The system requires 24 operational and 2-3 reserve satellites in orbit to ensure global coverage.In December 2010, a malfunction of the booster resulted in a loss of three Glonass satellites.

BEIJING, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- Beijing will offer residents 20,000 rental bikes this year to ease the city's notorious traffic jams, according to authorities with the Beijing Municipal Commission of Development and Reform.Five hundred rental kiosks will be set up around the city to offer residents over 20,000 rental bikes, the commission said.Beijing has also proposed creating new bike lanes in some areas, including main streets, historical and cultural conservation areas and some major business districts, from 2011 to 2015, according to the commission.The capital city currently has about 5 million vehicles on its roads, leading to serious traffic congestion that frustrates the city's residents on a daily basis."A lack of bike lanes is the reason why I refuse to ride a bike. Bikes and vehicles are using the same lanes, and that frightens me and makes me feel unsafe," said Beijing resident Song Tao.People often park cars on the city's existing bike lanes, pushing cyclists onto the vehicles' lanes, said Song.To ease traffic congestion, Beijing has made various efforts to encourage people to opt for modes of public transportation.On Dec. 31, Beijing opened three new subway lines, bringing the number of subway lines in Beijing to 15, with a total length of 372 kilometers, said Beijing Metro Spokesman Jia Peng.Beijing will open four more subway lines in 2012, according to information released at a rail transit construction mobilization conference.Amid other measures to ease traffic in 2011, city authorities decided to allow only 240,000 vehicles to be registered annually, slashing the new car registrations by two-thirds from the 2010 level.Meanwhile, vehicles are banned from roads one day each week according to license plate numbers.

BEIJING, Oct. 12 (Xinhuanet) -- Study found that women who took multivitamins may actually be at risk, media reports on Wednsday.Women who took the dietary supplements vitamin B6, folic acid, magnesium, zinc, copper, iron and multivitamins had a higher risk of death than women who did not.The new study, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, examined more than 38,000 women aged 55 and older who took part in the Iowa Women's Health Study, which started in the mid 1980s. Researchers found the vitamins did nothing to reduce the risk of death and that most supplements have no positive effect on women's health.The study did not distinguish if the women in the study took the vitamins to fight diseases or to maintain health.Vitamin experts say the best way to make sure you are getting all necessary vitamins is to eat a well-balanced diet. The vitamins people take do not  depend on personal preference.

BEIJING, Dec. 30 (Xinhua) -- China will push to properly resolve the case of a Chinese skipper indicted by Japan, the Foreign Ministry said Friday.Spokesman Hong Lei said this is a common fishing case, and the Chinese embassy in Japan has dispatched officials to visit the skipper.China requests that Japan ensure the rights of the Chinese skipper, Hong said, and China is communicating closely with Japan in order to properly resolve the case.The Chinese government has been requiring fishermen to fish legally, Hong said, adding that the competent authorities have done a lot in this area, and he promised to promote the management and education of Chinese fishermen.Japanese prosecutors have indicted the captain of a Chinese fishing boat for illegally operating in Japanese waters, a local official said Friday.The Nagasaki District Public Prosecutors Office has finalized its case against Zhong Jinyin, 39, following his December 20 arrest near islands off southwest Japan, according to the official.The prosecutors have not indicated whether the skipper has admitted to the charge.
