WASHINGTON -- A veteran who lost his genitals due to a blast in Afghanistan has received the world’s most extensive penis transplant, according to the Associated Press.Surgeons at John Hopkins University said they wanted to address “an unspoken injury of war” by rebuilding the man’s entire pelvic region, transplanting a penis, scrotum and part of an abdominal wall from a deceased donor. In total, officials with the hospital said the surgery took 14 hours.Such transplants "can help those warriors with missing genitalia just as hand and arm transplant transformed the lives of amputees," Dr. W.P. Andrew Lee, Hopkins' chairman of plastic and reconstructive surgery. The patient, who asked to keep his identity hidden, is expected to regain urinary and sexual function. The scrotum transplant didn’t include the donor’s testicles, so reproduction won’t be possible.Three other successful penis transplants have been performed. Two in South Africa and one at Massachusetts General Hospital. For functionality, surgeons had to connect nerves and blood vessels. Hopkins is now screening additional veterans to see if any are good candidates for this type of reconstructive transplant. In a statement, Hopkins says the patient was quoted as saying: "When I first woke up, I felt finally more normal." 1302

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump is going to keep people in suspense about how he'll respond to the election. The Republican president is refusing to publicly commit to accepting the results in November. Trump made a similar threat weeks before the 2016 vote. Trump told Chris Wallace on Fox News Channel this weekend it's too early to make such an ironclad guarantee and scoffed at polls showing him lagging behind Democrat Joe Biden. The Biden campaign says the American people will decide the election and the government “is perfectly capable of escorting trespassers out of the White House.” Trump also is hammering the Pentagon brass for favoring renaming bases that honor Confederate military leaders.During the interview with Wallace, the president also reiterated there will not be a nationwide mask mandate. He said he is "a believer in masks," but the decision to require face coverings is up to the states to decide. 939

VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Did you know Vista was once the Strawberry Capital of the World? The North San Diego County city invites you to celebrate its history this Sunday at the annual Vista Strawberry Festival. In the 1960s and 1970s, strawberries from Vista were shipped around the world. The crates were so popular, strawberries in the Netherlands became known as “vistas”, according to the festival’s website. The community celebration, to be held May 26, brings events including a run, Little Ms. Strawberry Shortcake pageant, and contests for pie eating and beer stein-holding. Visitors can also enjoy bands, a wine and beer garden, vendors, and carnival rides. The festival runs from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Main Street and Hanes Place in downtown Vista. Organizers encourage you to take a free shuttle from Vista Village and Main Street (in front of Five Guys) or Citrus and Eucalyptus.See video of last year's event: 927

Wall Street is worried about a trade war.The Dow dropped 420 points on Thursday after President Trump said his administration will impose tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. The Nasdaq and the S&P 500 declined 1.3% apiece.Trump's controversial tariff announcement caught investors off guard and immediately raised concerns about retaliation from China or other major U.S. trading partners."This is the first shot across the bow over a trade war," said Art Hogan, chief market strategist at B. Riley FBR. "And nobody wins a trade war."Trump said his administration would impose a 25% tariff on steel imports and a 10% tariff on aluminum. It was not immediately clear whether Trump would exempt some countries from the tariffs, as his national security advisers have urged him to do to avoid hurting U.S. allies.Corporate America has warned Trump that tariffs could backfire. Last month, the Business Roundtable warned of the risk of "foreign retaliation" that would "harm the U.S. economy."Investors will be looking to see how U.S. trading partners react to the tariffs.Beyond worries about retaliation, the tariff news drove concerns about rising costs for companies that rely heavily on aluminum and steel, like auto and plane makers. Imports make up about a third of the steel American businesses use every year, and more than 90% of aluminum used here. Shares of Boeing fell 3% General Motors dipped 4%, and Ford dropped 3%.Related: NY Fed chief: Tariffs risk 'trade war'If the tariffs result in higher prices on steel and aluminum, companies that rely on those products may pass on some of the costs to consumers. That raises the specter of creeping inflation."This clearly will [lead to] higher prices in the production chain, which is part of the inflation path," said Quincy Krosby, chief market strategist at Prudential Financial. The timing of the tariff news surprised Wall Street. A formal announcement was expected at some point Thursday, but then it was called off. Later, Trump mentioned his tariff plans in a hastily arranged listening session with steel and aluminum executives. And he didn't provide crucial details, such as whether certain countries will be exempted.Concerns about trade come at an already shaky time on Wall Street. The S&P 500 and Dow fell about 4% in February, their worst month in two years. Fears about inflation and soaring bond yields caused a surge in volatility, including two 1,000-point plunges for the Dow.The market had come back as investors focused on the strong economy and booming corporate profits. But stocks fell sharply again on Tuesday and Wednesday, putting the Dow is back in negative territory for the year.Turbulence has picked up as well. The VIX volatility index spiked 15% on Thursday. Selling pressure will climb as volatility increases, Krosby said.At least two corners of the stock market cheered Trump's tariff announcement. U.S. Steel and AK Steel soared 6% and 10%, respectively.Century Aluminum also spiked 7%. Another major aluminum maker, Alcoa, gained 1%.Trump's tariff moves could force investors to confront another trade issue: NAFTA. Trump has repeatedly threatened to tear up this major trade deal with Canada and Mexico. Talks to renegotiate NAFTA, a major piece of the U.S. economy, have so far failed to produce a solution."It sets off the protectionist fears that had been lying dormant," said Hogan.— CNN's Jeremy Diamond contributed to this report.The-CNN-Wire? & ? 2018 Cable News Network, Inc., a Time Warner Company. VISTA (CNS) - A Vista vodka distillery that shifted its operations to producing hand sanitizer during the coronavirus pandemic announced Tuesday that it will donate a portion of the proceeds to fund COVID-19 research.Misadventure & Co. said 15% of profits generated by its hand sanitizer sales will go to "scientific research institutions, including The National Institutes of Health Foundation, John Hopkins Medical Foundation and University of California San Diego Health Foundation in the name of COVID-19 research and response."In March, the company pivoted operations to manufacturing hand sanitizer after pandemic restrictions prevented patrons from visiting its distillery or tasting room."We are so thankful that we were able to pivot our business and save jobs when the coronavirus first struck. We want to give back by donating to institutions that will help find a vaccine," said co-founder Sam Chereskin."Now just like our sustainable vodka, consumers can feel good about purchasing their hand sanitizer through our website because they know they will support efforts to end this pandemic," he said. ``We call on more companies to join this movement and help donate a portion of their proceeds in a similar manner." 1239
