The survey found that 44% of Americans feel indoor restaurants are unsafe to visit amid a pandemic, compared to 40% who believe they are safe. Women were more likely to say indoor dining is unsafe compared to men.More consumers, however, say getting takeout and dining outdoors is safe. Nearly 67% of respondents felt it’s safe to get takeout, and 58% said eating outdoors is safe.What do experts say?Many experts have said even with the precautions restaurants are taking, there is still a sizeable risk of catching the virus while dining inside. These risks, however, are generally significantly lower for those dining outside.Last month in an interview with MSNBC, Dr. Anthony Fauci pointed toward restaurants being among riskiest places to visit amid the pandemic. Fauci added that bars and gyms also are considered risky in his view.“When you have restaurants indoors in a situation where you have a high degree of infection in the community [and] you're not wearing masks, that's a problem,” Dr. Fauci said.Fauci pointed toward a September 2020 CDC study that found those who visited restaurants in the previous two weeks were two times more likely to test positive for the coronavirus than those who said they had not been inside a restaurant.“Reports of exposures in restaurants have been linked to air circulation,” the CDC said. “Direction, ventilation, and intensity of airflow might affect virus transmission, even if social distancing measures and mask use are implemented according to current guidance. Masks cannot be effectively worn while eating and drinking, whereas shopping and numerous other indoor activities do not preclude mask use.”Economic impact to restaurantsWith many restaurants forced to close indoor operations during the spring, and scale back indoor capacity during the summer, millions were out of work. According to the National Restaurant Association, 8 million restaurant workers, representing nearly half of the industry, were without jobs during the height of the pandemic. There remained over 2 million out-of-work restaurant employees as of the start of October.As of Wednesday, 100,000 restaurants have either closed for good, or for a significant period of time. As a whole, the restaurant industry is expected to lose 0 billion by the end of 2020.In hopes of minimizing spread and regaining customer confidence, the CDC and industry leaders have implemented cleaning procedures. Grand jury recordings of the Breonna Taylor case released on Friday reveal initial interviews police conducted with Taylor's boyfriend, Kenneth Walker."I'm scared. I don't know what to say," Walker told investigators on the same day his girlfriend was shot and killed in their apartment during a drug raid by Louisville Metro Police.Grand jurors listened to a series of interviews police conducted with Walker.Walker said he and Taylor were watching a movie when the first knock on the door happened. As more knocks came, Walker told investigators the repeatedly yelled, 'Who is it?' with no response."She's yelling at the top of her lungs, and I am too at this point. No answer. No response. Nothing," Walker said. "I was scared to death."Knocking continued as they were getting dressed. Walker told investigators he grabbed his gun at that point."It's the middle of the night, [someone is] knocking on the door and not even saying who they are. What are you going to do if you're at home with your family, and somebody is knocking on your door, and you don't know who it is after you've asked?" Walker told them Taylor's record was clean while he had recently done jail time for a DUI. As investigators pressed Walker to answer why he believed police might be at Taylor's apartment that night, he responded that he didn't know. Hospitals and states collecting case data on COVID-19 patients will now be reporting that data directly to the federal government, instead of the CDC's online database.Beginning this week, according to an update on the Health and Human Services website, states and hospitals are being asked to submit data directly to the federal government and task force in an effort to cut down on duplicate requests and minimize the reporting burden on hospitals and facilities.“As of July 15,, 2020, hospitals should no longer report the Covid-19 information in this document to the National Healthcare Safety Network site,” the statement reads. The emphasis was added in the original document.The National Healthcare Safety Network site is the CDC’s site for tracking infectious diseases.The document says the change in reporting will help the White House coronavirus task force to allocate supplies like personal protective gear, ventilators and drugs like remdesivir.Some are worried the change in where the data will be kept means a change in public access to the data.“Historically, C.D.C. has been the place where public health data has been sent, and this raises questions about not just access for researchers but access for reporters, access for the public to try to better understand what is happening with the outbreak," Jen Kates, the director of global health and H.I.V. policy with the nonpartisan Kaiser Family Foundation, told the the New York Times, who first reported on this change.Many researchers, scientific modelers and health officials in municipalities around the country rely on the CDC’s data to make projections and time-sensitive decisions.Michael Caputo, the assistant secretary for public affairs at the department, said in a statement to CNN, a "new faster and complete data system is what our nation needs to defeat the coronavirus and the CDC, an operating division of HHS, will certainly participate in this streamlined all-of-government response.
