SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As San Diego’s Pride celebration approaches, a new homeless shelter has opened specifically focusing on members of the LGBTQ community.It’s operated by the Interfaith Shelter Network, which just opened a new branch in Hillcrest after receiving grants from the Pride Foundation and the Cushman Foundation.Abigail Shrestha, the manager of the rotational shelter programs at Interfaith, said they opened the new shelter because they recognized the need.“It’s a population that has quite a bit of discrimination and other issues, so it’s beneficial to have something that supports the community,” said Shrestha.The operation is based out of Hillcrest, but the shelter location will rotate between churches in Interfaith’s network. As of Monday, one week after they opened, they had six clients, though it can hold up to 12 people. Shrestha said she expects it to be full by the end of the week.Interfaith operates shelters around the county which are all LGBTQ friendly, but this is the first one that is targeted for that community. Mainly, said Shrestha, because of the unique circumstances of their housing instability.“Many of the clients, especially the youth, are forced out of their homes. Some families will not recognize positively their choices, and they are kicked out,” she said.Their main goal is to get the residents into permanent housing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Approximately 900,000 San Diegans who pay for sewer services may have had their rights violated.It’s part of what being alleged in a massive new class action lawsuit against the City of San Diego, its Public Utilities Department and the San Diego City Council.The suit calls it an “illegal financing scheme”. Attorneys who brought the suit claim the issue surrounds the city’s million smart water meter system and how it was paid for.  The lawsuit alleges the city knowingly used about million from the city's sewer fund instead of the city's water fund to help pay for that meter system.Subsequently, hundreds of thousands of San Diego sewer ratepayers were allegedly misinformed about what their money was being used for. Attorneys argue sewer ratepayers were quite possibly paying for a system that they did not necessarily benefit from- the smart water meter system. It’s still unknown whether there were any rate hikes directly tied to this.The suit claims the situation was an unconstitutional grab of million in funds.The San Diego City Attorney’s Office is reviewing the complaint and will respond through the court. 1183

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As San Diego sporting associations work to recruit new officials, they're up against abuse from parents and fans.The problem has gotten so bad that one youth soccer referee created a Facebook page to call out the bad behavior, parent shaming in hopes to address the problem nationwide.Kia Dehpanah has been officiating in San Diego for 25 years. While he does hear complaints from the sideline, he says younger referees deal with it the most.RELATED: Eastlake Little League responds to Park View player eligibility complaint"After a while, these young referees say, 'I don't need this aggravation,'" said Dehpanah.Last year, some youth sports like field hockey and lacrosse had to cancel some games due to not enough referees. These sports face additional recruiting challenges like finding officials who can work early games. There's also a misconception you must have prior knowledge of the sport beforehand."It's not the most glorified profession, it's a tough profession, but I think it has a lot of rewards too," said San Diego CIF Commissioner, Jerry Schniepp.Alicia Oswald, on the San Diego Girl's Lacrosse Umpiring Board, uses officiating as a way to give back to the community. She hopes parents and fans will hear this message so that potential recruits aren't too intimidated to go after the job."We are people too, we are humans," said Oswald. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Authorities are searching for a person suspected of starting a trash can fire that scorched the side of a Normal Heights home early Thursday morning.At around 2 a.m., San Diego Fire-Rescue crews were called to the 3300 block of Meade Avenue in response to a trash can on fire next to a house.Some residents told ABC 10News they heard noises at the trash cans and the saw a fire begin to ignite.Screams from residents apparently scared off a person believed to have sparked the blaze.As fire crews arrived, flames from the trash can burned the side of one house. The fire was quickly knocked down before it could engulf the entire home.ABC 10News learned one person was displaced due to the fire; no injuries were reported.A description of the person suspected of starting the fire was not immediately available.Arson investigators are involved in the fire probe. 889

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Businesses in the Gaslamp District were evacuated Saturday due to a natural gas leak. San Diego Fire crews evacuated several business in the area of Fifth Avenue and E Street in the heart of the Gaslamp District. All streets within a one block radius, from F St. to Broadway and Fourth Ave. to Sixth Ave., have been blocked off. Police are asking pedestrians and drivers to avoid the area.No injuries were reported.
