SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — This Labor Day, the Little Italy community will celebrate their annual Stickball Tournament, honoring the East Coast past time made popular in several neighborhoods.The sport draws on the area's heritage that began decades ago.Since the 1920s, Little Italy has served as a ethnic business and residential hub. But as the tuna industry declined, about 35% of Little Italy disappeared with it and because of the construction of Interstate 5.But today, locals are working to restore the area to its business and cultural roots. Part of that, is stickball. Little Italy's tournament comes around every Labor Day weekend, giving spectators and players the chance to relive some childhood memories. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego Humane Society launched an investigation into possible animal neglect Monday.  The investigation is focused on the former Carmel Mountain Ranch Country Club.The golf course shut down in July.A spokesman with the Humane Society says someone reported that the declining state of one of the ponds on the course was endangering koi and other wildlife.Homeowners living near the course say they often smell a foul stench coming from the pond.The Humane Society says they’ve they’ve reached out to the owner of the country club and golf course.The Humane Society sent 10News a statement that says in part:"Because it is an open investigation, we cannot discuss details, but we take reports like this very seriously. The office of the county clerk put out a statement Wednesday urging couples wishing to tie the knot to make an appointment. “We are excited to offer walk-in services at our historic downtown office on the waterfront for Valentine’s Day and don’t want couples to miss their chance at Valentine’s Day wedding,” said County Clerk Ernie Dronenburg. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Valley Fire has scorched more than 17,000 acres forcing families and animals out of their homes, but during all the chaos, the Children's Nature Retreat in Alpine was able to find safe homes for most of its 143 animals. It's been a tough last few days says Executive Director Agnes Barrelet, who spotted the fire and a hillside, the minute it sparked."You can't panic. You have to worry, but you have to remain cool. If you panic, your animals are going to sense it, and it's going to be worse," said Barrelet.In all, the nature retreat had to evacuate 118 of their animal which wasn't easy."We evacuated the most fragile animals first, and then the one's that may panic. I evacuated all the horses, then the mini horses mini donkeys," Barrelet says.A majority of the animals were taken by Good Samaritan's and given places to stay at various locations in East County."They were calling us and we were determining what space they had, and how much space. We also needed to know the height of the fences," Barrelet said. "That gave us an indication of who would take which animals where."It's been a tough year for the Children's Nature Retreat, as they were forced to close earlier this year due to COVID-19, and now the fires have temporarily shut them down."The fire of course forced us to close down again. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The race for California's 50th Congressional District is zeroing in on two candidates following Super Tuesday.Former City Councilmember Carl DeMaio conceded Tuesday, leaving the path clear for the March Primary's top two vote-getters Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar and Former Republican Rep. Darrell Issa."While I am disappointed, I am filled with two other emotions: gratitude for supporters like you and pride in the incredible campaign we ran," DeMaio's statement read.
