XIAMEN, May 16 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin met people of all circles from both sides of the Taiwan Straits attending the largest-yet unofficial cross-Straits forum Saturday afternoon.     The week-long Straits Forum that kicked off on Saturday evening was attended by more than 8,000 Taiwan guests. It features 18 activities including a centerpiece conference, a trade fair, a cultural week, a tourism forum and a seminar on traditional Chinese medicine. Different from the cross-Straits economic, trade and cultural forum held by the Communist Party of China and Taiwan's ruling Kuomintang (KMT) Party which mainly discusses policy issues, the Straits Forum deals with exchanges among the people.     He hopes the forum could be an important platform promoting cross-Straits exchanges and attract more Taiwan compatriots to attend.     Chu Li-lun, the KMT Party vice chairman, said the forum met the demand of people from both sides and development of cross-Straits relations, and that it included varied economic, cultural and folk custom activities.     The forum is co-hosted by Xiamen and three other cities in Fujian, Fuzhou, Quanzhou and Putian.

DAMASCUS, April 26 (Xinhua) -- During his Middle East tour, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi on Sunday put out a five-point proposal to push forward the Middle East peace process and common development.     Yang, who has visited Egypt, the Palestinian territories, Israel and Syria, said in an exclusive interview with Xinhua that China has been closely following the situation in the Middle East and he has made in-depth exchanges of views with concerned parties on various issues of the region during his Middle East visit. The Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip at the end of 2008 has brought heavy casualties and instability to the region, which shows once again that if the Middle East issue is not been fundamentally solved, there will be no peace and security in this region, he said.     Currently, Israel has formed a new government and the two main Palestinian factions have been holding talks under the mediation of Egypt. Under such circumstances, Yang put the five-point proposal, which includes:     First, the concerned parties should adhere to the peace talks, and firmly promote the peace process on the basis of relevant UN resolutions, the "land for peace" principle, the "Road Map" plan, and the Arab peace initiative, Yang said.     Second, the parties should take positive measures to restore stability and accumulate mutual trust, so as to create conditions for the development of peace process.     Third, China believes the two-state solution should be maintained and calls for an early establishment of an independent Palestinian state and the two countries of Palestine and Israeli live in harmony.     "This is the ultimate way out for the Palestinian issue, which can give guarantee to the Middle East peace and security," Yang said.     Fourth, the international community should continue to pay due attention to the Middle East issue, and deliver its supports to the peace talks, the inner-Palestinian unity and economic growth.     Fifth, the peace negotiations between Palestine and Israel, Syria and Israel, Lebanon and Israel should advance in a coordinated way in order to achieve comprehensive peace across the Middle East region, Yang said.     "As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China will continue to maintain close communication and coordination with parties concerned to play a constructive role in pushing for a comprehensive, just and lasting solution to the Middle East issue," Yang added.     He said he has enunciated China's position on current Middle East issues during the trip. He hoped relevant parties could stick to the peaceful negotiation and accumulate mutual trust in a bid to advance the Middle East peace process.     He said he believes his visits to the four Middle East nations will contribute to the peace process.     Yang left the Syrian capital Damascus on Sunday after meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Mualem. 

BEIJING, July 3 (Xinhua) -- A total of 150 disabled people were honored in Beijing Friday as national models for self-reliance.     They were the fourth batch of such honorees since China began in 1991 to honor disabled citizens for their unyielding spirits in the face of adversity.     "I'm very happy and proud of myself," said 32-year-old Ma Yunli, one of the medal receivers.     A native in Yanan in northwest China's Shaanxi Province, the mentally-challenged girl was winner of several medals of Paralympic Games.     "Through years' efforts, I can basically take care of myself and can even do some simple things for my family members," she said.  Chinese President Hu Jintao (R, front) shakes hands with representatives before a national meeting in Beijing, capital of China, July 3, 2009. I also want them to achieve success."     According to the China Disabled Persons' Federation (CDPF), the honored disabled this year aged from 19 to 72. Some of them are workers, farmers, students, and others come from various sectors including education, medical service, law, culture and science.     Among them, 97 suffer from limb disabilities, 32 are sight-disabled, 18 have hearing problems, two are mentally-impaired, one suffers from more than one kind of disability.     Also at Friday's conference, 200 institutions and 150 individuals were honored for the great help they had given to the disabled.     China has more than 83 million people with various kinds of disabilities, accounting for 6.34 percent of the total population.     Chinese leaders including Hu Jintao, Wen Jiabao, Li Changchun, Xi Jinping, and Li Keqiang met the delegates of the conference before it started.     Vice Premier Hui Liangyu said while addressing the meeting that the government should "speed up the establishment of social security and service systems for the disabled to create equal and better environment for them to participate in social affairs and for their all-round development."     Activities to help this group of people should be "more professional" and "standardized," said Hui, also director of the disabled working committee of the State Council, or Cabinet.     The CDPF's Chairwoman Zhang Haidi, a wheelchair-bound writer, presided over the conference.

BEIJING, April 27 (Xinhua) -- In light of an outbreak of swine flu in Mexico, China's Ministry of Health issued a notice Sunday about disease prevention and detection, warning citizens to be careful.     The notice defines the symptoms of the disease and how it can be transmitted to humans.     Although there is no vaccine yet, the disease is preventable, controllable and treatable, it said.     As of Monday morning, no cases of the illness had been reported in China.     The ministry said so far, there is no evidence that this flu could be spread through food.     It also warned those who travel abroad to be alert for any signs of infection.     Swine influenza A/H1N1 is a respiratory disease that infects pigs and does not normally infect humans. But sporadic cases do occur, usually for people who have had close contact with pigs.     It has killed more than 60 people out of about 1,000 suspected cases in Mexico.     China's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (GAQSIQ) issued an emergency notice Saturday requiring people to report flu-like symptoms at the point of entry when returning from affected regions.     According to the Health Ministry, the ministry is working with the Ministry of Agriculture and GAQSIQ to monitor the disease.     The ministry has contacted scientists who have done viral sequencing on swine flu. It has also stepped up cooperation with the World Health Organization and the U.S. and Mexican governments to obtain updated epidemic information and prepare for a possible outbreak.     China should establish an effective disease prevention and control system it it entry-exit inspection and quarantine process, the ministry added.

HONG KONG, May 18 (Xinhua) -- China will definitely be able to meet the target of achieving eight percent economic growth in 2009, a senior official of the country's top economic planning body said here Monday.     "Judging from the indicators of the first four months, I do believe it is highly possible to achieve an eight percent growth for the full year. In fact, I believe the target will definitely be met," said Xulin, head of the Department of Fiscal and Financial Affairs of the National Development and Reform Commission.     Speaking at a briefing in Hong Kong, Xu said the basic assessment was that there has been consolidation in the recovery momentum and that the minor slowdown in April, normal as it has been when considering the past experiences, did not necessarily signal a second bottom in the ongoing economic downturn.     Economic planners have been monitoring the economy closely and are prepared to put in place additional measures in the coming months if it is necessary, Xu said.     Post-earthquake reconstruction in Sichuan province was being carried out quicker than previously planned. Small and medium enterprises were receiving financing aid from guarantee programs, Xu told local as well as foreign reporters.     The National Development and Reform Commission will approve 600 billion yuan (88 billion U.S. dollars) of corporate bonds this year as the IPO market remained cool, compared with 236 billion (35 billion U.S. dollars) for 2008, Xu said.     The debt of the Chinese government was about 20 percent of gross domestic product, compared with over 190 percent for Japan, close to 100 percent for the United States and 60 percent on average for the European economies.     The Chinese government has planned a budget deficit of 950 billion yuan (139 billion U.S. dollars) for 2009, which represented about 2.8 percent of gross domestic product.     Xu said the ample resources could sustain heavy government investment to stimulate the economy for several years although "it was not necessary. "The Chinese government will spend more resources to develop public housing programs and a pension system and to push forward the health reform, so as to increase the contribution of domestic consumption to economic growth," Xu said.     "I don't think export can still play the roles as they did in past few years in driving the Chinese economy," Xu said, adding that China, as a responsible player, would like to see a moderately stable yuan.
