LANZHOU, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- Inspectors had found poisonous chemical in the Sanlu infant formula produced by one of its partner producers in northwest China's Gansu Province, an official said on Sunday. Two out of the 12 samples randomly selected from the Sanlu milk powder produced by the Haoniu Dairy Co., Ltd. in Jiuquan City had tested positive for melamine, said Xian Hui, vice-governor of Gansu. "The products of Haoniu have been sealed up," he said. The test was conducted after the Sanlu Group, a leading Chinese dairy producer based in northern Hebei Province, admitted that it had found some of its baby milk powder products were contaminated with melamine, a chemical raw material strictly forbidden by the country to be used in food processing. As of Saturday, a total of 432 babies throughout the nation have been sickened with kidney stones after drinking the contaminated milk powder. Haoniu was founded in 2002 with the registered capital of 51 million yuan (7.45 million U.S. dollars). Its production was in line with the Sanlu standard and its products use the Sanlu trademark. As of Saturday night, Gansu has reported 102 cases of infant kidney stone caused by the Sanlu milk powder. Two babies have died, Xian said. The province has so far seized altogether 164,000 packs of Sanlu milk powder.
BEIJING, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- Premier Wen Jiabao said on Saturday China was confident and fully capable of keeping a good momentum of economic growth this year despite domestic difficulties and a global economic slowdown. Addressing a seminar for the country's ministerial-level official in Beijing, Wen said this year had been the most difficult year as China faced both global challenges and domestic problems in economic operation. Premier Wen Jiabao on Saturday addresses a seminar for the country's ministerial-level official in Beijing. Global financial instability and economic slowdown had exerted a strong influence on the country. In addition, China had to tackle domestic problems, including price increases and regional economic slowdown. However, the country had adopted a series of counter measures and these had proved effective, he said. With huge domestic demand, relatively abundant capital and an improved labor force quality, the country was fully confident and capable of reinforcing the good momentum of economic growth. Wen noted the material wealth collected in the past three decades and accumulated experience would help the country to address problems arising from economic development. Efforts should be made to rein in inflation and ensure macro-economy stability, especially the financial market and the stock market, he stressed. In his speech, Wen urged local governments and officials to put work and food safety at the top of their agendas. The development of enterprises and economy should not be at the cost of people's lives and health, he emphasized. Wen also vowed to beef up efforts to monitor food quality and rectify the food market. All illegal activities should be severely punished to ensure people have safe food. He also championed the balanced development between the rural and urban areas, saying agricultural issues should be the first priority of government work The seminar was presided over Vice Premier Li Keqiang. Vice President Xi Jinping also attended.
BEIJING, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- The financial crisis and other major issues challenging the world will be discussed in the upcoming summit of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM), according to Liu Jieyi, China's assistant foreign minister. "The ASEM summit would be convened under the special international circumstance," said Liu at a press conference here on Tuesday. He added the financial situation was in turbulence and the three major challenges, including food safety, climate change and energy issues, were interwoven. Under the theme of dialogue, cooperation, mutual benefit and common prosperity, the summit would touch upon these issues. The seventh ASEM summit will be held in Beijing from Oct. 24 to25. At present, most foreign members had confirmed their attendance. Liu said all members would focus on disaster-relief cooperation, the promotion of trade and investment, sustainable development and strengthening dialogue. Chinese President Hu Jintao will attend the meeting and Premier Wen Jiabao will preside over the meetings and a welcoming banquet. Leaders from four coordinators, including China, the EU commission, Brunei and France, would hold a joint press conference after the summit, Liu said, adding several bilateral meetings would also be held. "A chairman's statement is expected to be passed to reflect all members' stance on the major issues, outlining the key areas of cooperation in the future." Other documents will also be passed to improve the substantial cooperation on three major areas, including political, economic cooperation as well as social and cultural exchange. "This is another important event for China after the Beijing Olympic Games," Liu said. The 45-member ASEM, established in 1996, is a high-level forum between governments of Asia and Europe. It aims at creating better conditions for cooperation between the two continents through strengthening dialogue and mutual u
