CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A former Tijuana police officer was handed a two- year state prison sentence today for his role in a planned break-in of a Chula Vista residence, which he and others believed was a stash house containing around million in drug money.Marco Quijas-Castillo, 28, pleaded guilty earlier this year to one count of conspiracy to commit robbery for the attempted January break-in.A fellow Tijuana officer, Jesus Estrada Torres, 35, was also charged in the case and is awaiting trial on a conspiracy charge.According to preliminary hearing testimony, the two officers and four other men believed a shipment of money would be delivered to the three-bedroom residence, which was actually being rented by the FBI. The defendants were informed of the supposed shipment by an undercover FBI agent, according to testimony.According to the criminal complaint, Quijas-Castillo and Torres crossed into the United States from Mexico with Ignacio Martinez-Cruz, 34, and met up in Chula Vista with fellow defendants Nicholas Jeremiah Shaw, 25, Mario Eugene Hall, 35, and Tomas Emmanuel Ramirez, 30, who allegedly traveled to Chula Vista from San Bernardino County.Castillo and Torres ``provided counter-surveillance'' at a Kohl's store in Chula Vista, while the other four men met with the undercover agent, according to the complaint.Castillo and Torres also provided surveillance near the Chula Vista residence while Shaw walked up to the house, and ``entered a code into a lockbox containing a key to enter the house,'' the complaint alleges.According to testimony, the men planned to tie up two people believed to be inside the home, then take the money, but were arrested by law enforcement upon approaching the home. 1733

Christopher Krebs, the former head of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) who was fired on Tuesday evening by President Donald Trump for asserting that the 2020 election was the "most secure in American history" is continuing to defend his agency's work.Krebs, who has headed the CISA since the Trump administration established the agency in 2018, made headlines last week when his agency released a statement refuting Trump's claims that the 2020 election was beset by voter fraud. On Tuesday evening, Trump tweeted that Krebs had been "terminated" from his position, calling his statement "highly inaccurate."In the hours since his firing, Krebs has continued to defend the integrity of the 2020 election on his personal Twitter account. Just moments after Trump's announced Krebs' firing, he tweeted that he felt his administration had "done it right.""Honored to serve. We did it right. Defend Today, Secure Tomorrow. #Protect2020," he tweeted. 980

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The Chula Vista City Council Tuesday approved a number of items to help people struggling during the COVID-19 pandemic. The city’s eviction moratorium was extended until at least July 31, giving renters relief if they cannot make their monthly rent payments. The council also approved a .5 million small business grant program to reimburse businesses for losses caused by the closures during the pandemic. The money comes from the federal government. Businesses can apply for the grant on the city’s website and must meet certain criteria. Some of the requirements include having less than 10 employees, being independently owned and not being an essential business. For businesses along Third Avenue, the relief is welcome. Chula Vista Brewery has moved their business outdoors and continued curbside pick-up to stay afloat during the pandemic. In a move to expand outdoor dining, Chula Vista’s council approved a permitting process to allow businesses on Third Avenue to expand into the public right of way, with social distancing and ADA compliance. This will allow for things like sidewalk and curb cafes. The city also authorized the closure of a portion of Third Avenue to traffic. The closure would only be on weekends during certain hours from now until January to allow for dining outdoors, but so far, there isn’t any plan in place to make that official. In addition to relief for businesses and renters, the city voted to accept nearly 0,000 in emergency aid for the homeless. To find out if you qualify for the city's small business grant click here. 1600

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - A new exhibit at the Chula Vista Library's Heritage Museum is telling the stories of the South Bay's Holocaust Survivors."History repeats itself, and if you don't recall it, then it's going to happen again," says Curator Sandra Scheller. The exhibit, "RUTH: Remember Us The Holocaust," focuses on Scheller's mother, Ruth. She survived three concentration camps before coming to Chula Vista. It also features 11 other survivors who called the area home over the last 70+ years.Scheller says only five survivors are left in the South Bay, and she wants to make sure no one forgets what they went through, or how they made Chula Vista a better place throughout their lives."This was a labor of love," Scheller says. "I've loved every second of it."The exhibit features photos of the survivors, artifacts from Jewish life before, during and after the Holocaust, and personal touches from Scheller's family. It includes replicas of the yellow stars her grandparents wore during World War II, clothing and even a tooth from her grandmother."She had to break this tooth out because it had some gold in it," Scheller explains. "The Nazis would have killed her for this gold."The exhibit opens Sunday, January 12 and will remain on display throughout the year. In addition to the exhibit, the museum plans to host speakers, movies, readings and other events about the Holocaust all year long.Scheller says she'll also give personal tours of the exhibit for schools. For more information on the new exhibit, click here. 1544

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A family in Chula Vista is beefing up security and warning their neighbors after surveillance cameras caught someone breaking in. Video shows a burglar smashing through a door in the house and ransacking the place before the family returned home with their young son with special needs. “It’s almost like TSA after 911. You just gotta not stop living your life; you got to fortify yourself and live your life a little differently right now,” said Dean Riggott. It’s the life Riggott, his wife, and their 9-year-old son say they’re living after surveillance footage from their kitchen captured the incident. “It’s a complete violation, like, right now I’m sleeping downstairs to be the first line of defense.”Riggott is defending his family against a burglar who smashed through a glass door and made his way inside. The family wasn’t home at the time. Their son was the first to notice the home had been burglarized.“He said, 'Dad, there is something wrong with the door, and there’s stuff all over the ground',” said Riggott. The 9-year-old couldn’t see what was wrong with the door because he is mostly blind. He also has autism. “Told my son immediately to get out, grabbed a knife and my club.”Police came minutes after being called but the burglar was long gone. The family was uneasy after seeing iPads, video game systems, and other expensive items untouched. “He’s talking to somebody the whole time on a Bluetooth, and I think that’s a key point.”Other than destroying things, the thief seemed to only target vintage, high-end purses, taking about ,000 worth. “He came in with socks on, he’s in the system; he must be in the system if he’s worried about his fingerprints.”Riggott says he hopes someone will recognize the man's face. Since the incident, Riggott says he has beefed up security and is hoping his neighbors will do the same. “Fortify your house, make sure you’re locking your doors, check your windows, and make sure your family is safe.” 1998
