SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - About 30 employees and friends of Hess Brewery will shave their heads Saturday to help raise money for pediatric cancer research.The event is a fundraiser for St. Baldrick's, a foundation that focuses on finding a cure for cancer.Brewery owner Mike Hess says the fundraiser is deeply personal, as his daughter Keely has been fighting Osteosarcoma since last August."Help me get rid of this mop! This is the longest my hair has been since I was a kid," Hess says in a video posted to YouTube.The event will be from 2-6 pm at the Hess Brewery and tasting room in North Park. The public is invited, and people can even decide to shave their own heads if they feel so inspired."It breaks my heart," says Beer-Tender Cassia O'Laughlin. "We need money to research so that kids don't have to go through cancer."Childhood cancer affects 300,000 kids per year, according to St. Baldrick's. Hess says he wants to raise 0,000 to help fund their programs.They have been taking donations at the brewery and online for months, with around ,000 already pledged. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A team led by Scripps Research has yielded positive results in a new research study involving antibodies.Researchers say they've worked to isolate the most potent antibodies in the blood of recovered COVID-19 patients. The study was published in "Science."Dennis Burton, the study's co-author, says once they identified the most potent antibodies, they cloned them."You clone the really good ones, and then you make lots and lots of them in production facilities and then use as a standard to protect and-or treat Covid-19," Burton said.They've tested the cloned antibodies, or monoclonal antibodies, on animals, and they've yielded positive results. They hope to conduct human testing early next year.When asked if it is similar to antibody treatments from convalescent plasma donations, Burton says what they're making is more efficient and can be produced for masses.He says the monoclonal antibodies could be used as a preventive measure given to uninfected but at-risk people before a vaccine is available, and could even be useful for people that may not respond well to a vaccine.He also says the monoclonal antibodies could be used to design better vaccines by giving researchers a better idea of which antibodies are most effective. 1268

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An inmate at R.J. Donovan State Prison has filed a lawsuit against the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.Anand Jon Alexander filed the complaint on Monday, alleging prison officials failed to keep him safe and to provide adequate medical care after he was assaulted behind bars.In the complaint, Alexander claims he was attacked by another inmate while waiting to make a phone call on May 18, 2019. He was allegedly stabbed multiple times in the face and kicked on the ground.After the attack he sustained “five facial fractures, a lower orbital floor blowout, sinus and nasal fractures, a deviated septum, a 50% abrasion to the right cornea, long term impairment of his vision and respiration, serious nerve damage, PTSD” according to the complaint.Alexander is 12 years in to a 59 year sentence after he was convicted of rape in 2008.An up and coming fashion designer, Alexander had been featured on “America’s Next Top Model” and was listed in Newsweek’s “Who’s Next in 2007.”But his career was put on hold after being accused by multiple women of sexual assault.Many of the charges were dropped, but he was convicted on one count of rape and 15 other counts following a trial in Los Angeles. The jury found him not guilty or were hung on several other counts.Alexander has maintained his innocence. In the complaint, his lawyer writes he “has acknowledged the existence of blurred lines between his personal and professional relationships…Nevertheless, he holds steadfast to his innocence.”The American Justice Alliance, a group which seeks to free prisoners who have been wrongfully convicted, submitted an amicus brief to the Federal Central District Court.In it, they wrote Alexander “was targeted by a collusion of disgruntled business associates and some former girlfriends, who have admitted they were out to “bring him down,” and “get revenge,” seeking notoriety and monetary benefits. He was then subject to a prosecution and trial riddled with extraordinary police misconduct.”The lawsuit names CDCR as well as Marcus Pollard, the Warden of R.J. Donovan Correctional Facility and Daniel Paramo, the former Warden.It alleges prison officials failed to protect Alexander from harm and after he was injured gave “deliberate indifference to Mr. Alexander’s medical condition.”They are seeking unspecified monetary damages and a jury trial.So far, no criminal charges have been filed against the assailant. 10News reached out to CDCR for comment but had not heard back before the story was published. 2557

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An Ohio man accused of pepper-spraying 11 San Diego Police officers during a demonstration last month has pleaded not guilty.Denzel Draughn, 28, pleaded not guilty on Wednesday to felony counts of unlawful use of tear gas against a peace officer and 11 felony counts of use of force against a peace officer.On Aug. 28, a group of demonstrators protesting the shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisc., marched through downtown San Diego.See Sky10 video of the demonstration below:Police say that as the group neared 9th and E Streets, a vehicle that was following the group failed to stop at red lights. After police stopped the driver, a crowd began to form near the car and officers who pulled the vehicle over.SDPD says that the group ignored demands to back up from the scene, prompting one officer to pull out pepper spray. Police say one person tried to knock the pepper spray out of the officer's hand, forcing the officer to discharge the spray.Several police officers then tried to arrest the person. As the officers were placing the person in custody, a pepper spray canister fell on the ground. Officers say Draughn picked up the canister and sprayed it twice, hitting 11 officers.SDPD says Draughn fled but was later found and arrested.If convicted, Draughn faces probation to 11 years in jail. He was released on 0,000 bail Wednesday evening."Peaceful protest is a time-honored tradition in our country, and now more than ever it’s critical that we protect an individual’s important First Amendment right. The majority of those protesting in our County are doing so peacefully. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An outage caused by a mylar balloon briefly left 2,000 people without power in several San Diego neighborhoods Tuesday night. According to the San Diego Gas and Electric outage map, 1774 people in Old Town, Mission Hills and Hillcrest were affected by the outage.
