Even though Serena Williams won just ,000 in prize money during the last 12 months the tennis great has still topped Forbes' list of the world's highest-earning female athletes. The .1 million the 23-time grand slam champion earned in endorsements was enough for her to top the list for a third straight year despite not playing competitively for 14 months after revealing in January 2017 that she was pregnant with her first child. The 36-year-old made twice as much off the court than any other female athlete, while only 16 male athletes have earned more than Williams over the past 12 months from sponsorships. The top 10 females earned a combined 5 million from June 2017 to June 2018 -- down 4% from last year and 28% from five years ago.In comparison, the combined earnings of the world's top 10 highest-paid sports stars, who are all male, tops a billion dollars.Forbes' rankings of the world's top 100 highest earning athletes of 2018 did not feature a woman after Williams' earnings fell as she went on maternity leave. The company attributes the downturn in the total earnings of the highest-paid women to the retirement of popular tennis players Li Na?and Ana Ivanovic and race car driver Danica Patrick, who is ranked ninth on the list.Maria Sharapova's off-the-court income, meanwhile, is still 50% down as the fallout from her 16-month suspension for doping continues.Eight of the top 10 are tennis players, with Indian badminton player PV Sindhu and Patrick the others on the list.Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki is second with total earnings of million, while reigning US Open champion Sloane Stephens (.7 million) is third. 1687

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- An Escondido-based avocado grower is voluntarily recalling avocados sold in bulk due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. Henry Avocado Corporation issued the recall Saturday due to positive test results on environmental samples taken during routine inspection of its packaging facility. So far, there are no reports of illness. The recalled products were packaged at Henry Avocado’s packaging facility and distributed to Arizona, California, Florida, New Hampshire, North Carolina and Wisconsin. Customers can identify the recalled fruit by the “Bravocado” stickers. Henry Avocado organic products do not carry the “Bravocado” label on the sticker. Instead those products are labeled “organic” and include “California” on the sticker. All shipments from the facility are subject to the recall. According to the company, avocados imported from Mexico and distributed by Henry Avocado are not part of the recall. The company said in a news release that it’s contacting all affected customers to make sure the products are removed from shelves. Anyone who purchased the recalled product are urged to discard or return the items for a full refund. Listeria monocytogenes can cause high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. 1303

ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) — Dr. Pat Davis stood atop the bluffs at Grandview Beach in Encinitas on Friday, holding back tears."Bear with me, please," he says. "This is only the second time I've been near the beach since the accident."That accident, on Aug. 2, 2019. His wife, Julie, daughter Annie, and sister-in-law Elizabeth were on Grandview Beach, when the bluff above them crumbled and fell, killing them.RELATED: Lawmakers hope 0K federal grant will help prevent future bluff collapse in Encinitas"Believe you me," Davis says, "It'd be a lot easier to not come down here. I came down here about a week ago for the first time in six months and it was difficult."But Davis made sure he would be there Friday, to help announce the first significant federal money devoted to help make the bluffs safer.Congressman Mike Levin announced 0,000 to start the engineering phase of the project to help prevent the tragedy from occurring again.RELATED: Community, husband of victim push for Encinitas bluff stabilization"The primary purpose of the project is to stabilize tall bluffs that erode due to high-energy storm swells and rising sea levels, posing threats to life, property and critical infrastructure," Levin said. There's still a ways to go.The project needs another roughly .5 million dollars for engineering, and it's estimated to cost million to carry out every five to 10 years. Levin said he'd continue to fight for the funds.RELATED: Geologist Dr. Pat Abbott assesses bluff damage in EncinitasIt's also unclear what the project will entail beyond sand replenishment.Davis says it's a start, but there's more to be done. He says he'd like to see more education about staying 40 feet from the bluffs; more blunt warning signs saying people have died at the beach; beach closures to families at high tide or when there is no safe are away from the bluffs, and 100-foot safe zones where parents know it is safe for their kids to play."I'd like to be able to at least say that I tried to do something," Davis says. 2038

ESTERO, Fla. — A Florida man saved his dog from certain death after he wrestled an alligator that snatched the puppy and dragged the pooch into a pond."He just came out like a missile," 74-year-old Richard Wilbanks of Estero said of the gator that attacked Gunner, his cavalier King Charles spaniel.Wilbanks jumped into the water, pried open the gator's mouth and freed Gunner from the gator's jaws. The rescue was caught on camera by the Florida Wildlife Federation.Wilbanks told CNN that his hands were "just chewed up," but Gunner is doing OK."We live on a shared landscape," Florida Wildlife Federation spokeswoman Meredith Budd told WINK-TV in Fort Myers. "We don't just want to tolerate wildlife, but, rather, we want to thrive with wildlife on a shared landscape."Gunner now takes walks on a leash and away from the water's edge. This story was originally published by Peter Burke on WPTV in West Palm Beach, Florida 929
