SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego businessman Doug Manchester has suggestions about how to help the people of the Bahamas recover from Hurricane Dorian. “It's devastation. It's beyond all anything that anybody can imagine. The aerial pictures don't do it justice on how much devastation there really is,” Manchester told 10News Thursday. Manchester loaded his plane with supplies and went to work on the island nation with relief organizers. “When this happened, I wanted to go down there as a private citizen to see all I could do to help,” Manchester said. Rebuilding is going to be a long and expensive process but Manchester believes it will happen. “It's going to cost billions, so every little bit helps,” said Manchester. Manchester, who has a long history in the Bahamas, was nominated to be the ambassador by President Trump. The nomination has been on hold for more than a year. “It's political, but hopefully that will see itself through in the next couple months because I can do a lot more as an ambassador than I can as a private citizen." Manchester hopes San Diegans will be generous in their donations to the Bahamas whether it’s through his charitable foundation or another aid group. 1205

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Residents in one City Heights neighborhood say they're upset their streets have become a constant "demolition derby."In the Ring video, a loud crashing sound is heard at night, before a frantic Yesenia Zepeda goes outside her home in late April. A hit-and run driver struck her girlfriend's car parked on Dwight Street near 47th Street. It is the second time her girlfriend's car has been struck outside the home in a 4-month period. "It's ridiculous and it's dangerous," said Zepeda. Last week, that danger played out again on her Ring camera, as a car collided with an SUV carrying a mother and a one-month-old baby, who appeared to be okay. "It was heartbreaking to see," said Zepeda. Zepeda fears more heartbreak may be just around the corner. "I hear screeching all the time," said Zepeda. She and other neighbors say crashes and close calls are a constant. "You really can't see anything at night," said Zepeda. Zepenia points to the dark street, speeding cars, a sharp turn, and one very narrow street. Other videos show just how tight that squeeze is. Sometimes, two-way traffic is not possible. Zepeda has contacted city officials, asking for streetlights, signage to help slow speeds, and turning a section of 47th Street into a one-way street. A city spokesperson issued the following statement: “In April 2017, a 24 hour traffic study was conducted and the data concluded that this location does not qualify for traffic calming measures. Although the data did not warrant traffic calming measures, in May 2017, the City installed 2 speed limit signs on Dwight and 47th Streets and painted a yellow centerline at the intersection of 47th and Dwight. The City will open a new case to re-evaluate this street segment for traffic calming and evaluate for street lights.” Corinne Wilson, Communications Manager for City Council President Georgette Gomez, issued the following statement: “Our office has been working with Yesenia. The corner was referred for a traffic study in 2017. Recently, we have requested that it also be specifically evaluated for additional signage and are requesting data from the SD Police Department regarding collisions. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Fire-Rescue responded after a man reportedly got his hand stuck in an industrial tortilla press Thursday night.According to the department, the incident happened just after 5:30 at Tortillera La Perla on the 3100 block of National Avenue in San Diego.The man has been carried out of the factory, but a piece of the equipment is reportedly still stuck to the man's hand. His condition is unclear at this time. Also unclear is how the man got his hand stuck in the press. 507

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County recorded its first death of the flu season this week, a 52-year-old woman.County health officials say the woman had underlying medical conditions and it's not known if she had been vaccinated or not."Any death is tragic. Our condolences go out to the individual’s family," Wilma Wooten, County public health officer, said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego and National City police departments announced several arrests Friday in violent crime cases over about two years in central San Diego and the South Bay.Police said in a release the crimes occurred between April 2018 and February 2020 in the Bay Terraces, Mountain View, and Shelltown neighborhoods, and the National City area.Many cases appeared to be linked to the same suspects, police added, and a gang allegation was attached to each crime:John Orozco, 26, of El Cajon, was arrested on Nov. 11, 2020, for the murder of Joaquin Ruiz on July 12, 2019, the attempted murder of Julio Martull on July 24, 2019, and other related crimes.Ethan Apan, 28, of National City, was arrested on Nov. 17, 2020, for the murder of Joaquin Ruiz on July 12, 2019, the attempted murder of Julio Martull on July 24, 2019, and conspiracy to commit the murder of Marco Magana on Aug. 1, 2019. Apan was also arrested for other related charges.Kevin Herrera, 26, of National City, was arrested on Nov. 17, 2020, for the murder of Joaquin Ruiz on July 12, 2019, and other related charges.Ismael Betancourt, 20, of National City, was arrested on Nov. 19, 2020, for the murder of Lowry Rivers on April 8, 2018. Jorge Sanchez, 18, of San Diego, had previously been arrested for the murder of Emily Cortez on July 15, 2020.
