SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Locally and nationally, the calls are growing louder for some immigrant detainees to be released. In 2018, Kazakhstan native Satbay Kydyrali, 31, made his way to a local border crossing "He crossed border, turned himself in and asked for asylum," said Almas Irgebayev, Kydyrali's brother.Irgebayev says the asylum claim was denied and is now under appeal, a decision that could be years away. Meanwhile his brother continues to being held at Otay Mesa Detention Center. "Last three days, I was just crying when I think about him," said Irgebayev.Irgebayev says his brother is coughing, and in a cell with 7 other men. They are less than two feet apart, and most of the other men are also coughing. His brother told him none of the staff is wearing masks, and the detainees clean their own cell twice a day. The two brothers talk on the phone every day."He says that he wants to get out. I was crying on the phone. I heard him crying as well," said Irgebayev.Irgebayev is fearful because his brother is at-risk. He contracted tuberculosis as a child and has developed chronic breathing issues."I'm in a panic. I am feeling very bad, because I'm helpless," said Irgebayev. Similar sentiments were on display at a socially distant, vehicle protest near the federal courthouse downtown. Immigrant advocates were asking for at-risk detainees to be released. On the same day, members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus called on Homeland Security officials to release low-priority detainees.In a statement, a DHS spokesperson says they're following CDC guidelines for disease monitoring and management protocols.' The iconic pool was one of the original attractions when the amusement park opened in 1925. However, it had run into hard times in recent years and has been closed for much of the last decade. One management company went bankrupt. The next came up with a renovation plan, only to discover dangerous, corroding conditions inside, leading to the pool's closure in 2014.Thanks to a partnership between the City of San Diego, Fit Athletic, and Pacifica Enterprises, the renovated pool is almost unrecognizable. "This is absolutely special, incredible," said Dr. McQuary, a longtime San Diego resident who is active in the community."What I remember about the Plunge was the issues and concerns about how we can swim and still be safe. When things would fall from the sky, it wasn't rain; it was the plaster from the ceiling!"The Plunge at Fit features floor to wall glass ceilings and a retractable roof. It also incorporates some of the building's original features, replicating the tiling and original archways.Part of the new Fit Athletic Mission Beach gym, the facility also offers beach views throughout. For people needing to renew their license like Debby Herscovitz, they had to plans months in advance, “I went online, booked an appointment, but I had no idea it was going to be in March”. Herscovitz got a notification from the DMV in the mail to renew her license back in December and immediately tried to make an appointment. She tells us the first available time slot was at the end of March, “I absolutely had no idea it was going to take that long”. A DMV representative tells 10News, drivers are trying to avoid the hours long line at the DMV by making an appointment online. Because so many people are scheduling appointments, the appointments are filling up faster than ever before. For Herscovitz, her appointment would have taken a total of 15 minutes to get her Real ID, however she didn’t have all the necessary documents. The DMV tells 10News to help people adjust to the new requirements and be prepared for their appointments they have a video people can watch before they make the trip in. Despite having to plan months in advance, the DMV says it’s still the best idea to schedule an appointment online before heading to a nearby office. Tips to keep in mind that could help with the scheduling process: don’t rule out nearby offices because some might not be as busy as others.
