SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Trips to the grocery store can be tough on the wallets of families trying to make it in San Diego.According to the USDA, a family of four can spend anywhere between 0 and ,300 a month on groceries alone. The bigger the family, the more you spend. San Marcos resident Melanie Anderson says the grocery bill for her family of six was around ,500 a month.“I went to the store with no plan. She focuses on creating dishes around the food she already has and only buying meat, bread, and produce that are marked down or on clearance.One of her biggest tips is calling the grocery stores in advance.RELATED: How to budget when you're on an inconsistent income“First, call the grocery store and ask them what time do you clearance whatever item you’re looking for. Whether it’s the meat department, ask to speak to the meat department. If you’re specifically looking for organic produce, ask that. Her followers are now posting their grocery store victories. “They send me pictures of everything in their grocery cart. They’ll say I used to spend 0, now I spend 0. She also says you should double check the 'sell by', 'use by', and 'best by' dates because you usually have a few days to use certain items before they go bad. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — U.S. Customs and Border Protection says officers seized more than 43,000 pounds of drugs at California ports of entry in June.Across six ports of entry along California's border with Mexico, CBP says officers stopped attempts to smuggle 34,685 lbs. of marijuana, 7,661 lbs. of methamphetamine, 635 lbs. of cocaine, 166 lbs. of heroin, and 165 lbs. of fentanyl in June. The total street value of the narcotics is more than million.The narcotics were found strapped to individuals' bodies and hidden in areas of vehicles, like gas tanks, trunks, seats, and quarter panels, according to CBP."These are impressive results and no matter what is occurring in the country, CBP officers remain vigilant," said San Diego CBP Director of Field Operations, Pete Flores. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local Marine's dreams are close to becoming a reality in the form of a massive property in Dulzura. It is not just for Kalani Creutzberg. His efforts to help others prompted an Animal Planet star to join the cause. Nate Schoemer was also a Marine. He was fresh out of high school with his blood type on his boots when he joined the invasion of Iraq.  "The first group was out there for three days and when they came back you could tell that they've just been through hell," Schoemer said. "This is hard for me to talk about," he said with tears in his eyes. It is especially hard to him to discuss it with civilians who often cannot comprehend the horrors of war. He lost some friends on that deployment in 2003."I could hear it from where I was," he started. "I mean I could hear them screaming," It haunted his heart on home soil., but he said his dog's love lifted his spirits. "I need to continue on this mission and helping others the way she helped me," he added.When he got out of the service he became a master dog trainer. He went on to host an Animal Planet show called "Rescue Dog to Super Dog". In it, he saved shelter dogs and turned them into service dogs for people in need. In episode one, he trained Bas for Creutzberg, which is how the two met. Creutzberg survived chilling deployments, but the fight for his life followed him home. "Before I knew it I was homeless," Creutzberg explained. "It was embarrassing, it was shameful," Bas gave him a sense of purpose. "When I was going there to rescue him he was actually the one rescuing me," Creutzberg added. Now, he is on a mission to give homeless vets a home. He plans to buy a property that is nearly 300 acres in Dulzura. "We're going to run our day to day operations very much like when we were back in the service," he explained. "There will be structure, we will work together…… the very things that a lot of us miss."It does not end there.  They will also rescue homeless dogs  about to be euthanized."[We'll] allow both the veterans and the dogs to grow relationships and start anew," he said. Schoemer believed in the Cammies and Canines Sanctuary so much, he joined the efforts. He plans to turn some of the dogs on death row into service dogs for vets. "Just being around Marines and veterans is a great thing,"  Schoemer said with a big grin. Their goal is to get back to tackling battles together. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Traumatic brain injury (TBI) survivors live with an invisible injury, and its effects can be debilitating."I was not happy with myself, I was unhealthy, I was seeking all sorts of excitement and danger, I was drinking a whole heck of a lot, very angered, always in pain, migraines, physically and emotionally drained, unhealthy in so many ways," said Jimmy Works, a retired Marine Corps veteran.While his last deployment was in 2010, Works was only diagnosed with TBI this year despite suffering multiple head injuries in combat."It's part of life, it's a new reality," said Works. Works and other TBI survivors are now finding healing through LoveYourBrain Yoga, an evidence-based program now in dozens of states. "What's unique about the LoveYourBrain series is it's specifically for survivors of traumatic brain injuries and their caregivers," said Nancine Decherd, a facilitator for the program.
