While Democrats are projected to take control of the US House, the party hoped that a blue wave would include winning a number of major gubernatorial seats. But in two larger states, Republican candidates hung on and won in Florida and Ohio. This came as some polls showed Democrats leading in those states heading into Tuesday's Election Day. In Florida, Republican Ron DeSantis held off Andrew Gillum, the Democrat who is the mayor of Tallahassee. DeSantis held a 1-percent advantage with more than 99 percent reporting. In Ohio, Republican state Attorneys General Mike DeWine defeated Democrat Richard Cordray. Cordray was previously appointed to the Consumer Protection Finance Board by President Barack Obama. DeWine had previously defeated Cordray in 2010 for the state's AG position. In a fierce battle in Georgia, Democrat Stacey Abrams said she is vowing to continue her fight despite trailing Republican Brian Kemp by a 51 to 48 margin late on Tuesday. The only county with outstanding votes remaining is the Democratic stronghold of Fulton County, which includes the city of Atlanta. If Kemp falls below the 50-percent threshold, the race will go to a runoff. Kemp has come under fire from Abrams' campaign for administering the election as secretary of state while running for governor. Abrams' campaign added that they expect that there are still nearly 45,000 uncounted votes in Democratic-leaning counties from paper ballots.In Iowa, Republican Kim Reynolds, who was previously the lieutenant governor of the state, defeated Democrat Fred Hubbell in a tight race. Although the results were disappointing for Democrats in Florida in Ohio, the Democrats have turned over at least four governor's seats on Tuesday. While President Donald Trump has pushed hardline immigration policies and vilified undocumented immigrants, his private club in New Jersey has employed people who managers allegedly knew were in the country illegally, The New York Times reported Thursday.The Times found two women who say they entered the United States unlawfully but were employed at the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey.Victorina Morales, a native of Guatemala, told the newspaper she had crossed into the US illegally in 1999 and was hired at the club in 2013 as a housekeeper using phony documentation.Another woman, Sandra Diaz, who's from Costa Rica and is now a legal resident of the US, said she was also undocumented when she worked at Bedminster between 2010 and 2013, the Times reported."We have tens of thousands of employees across our properties and have very strict hiring practices," Amanda Miller, a spokeswoman for the Trump Organization, said in a statement provided to CNN. "If any employee submitted false documentation in an attempt to circumvent the law, they will be terminated immediately."The Times noted there is no evidence that Trump or Trump Organization executives knew of the two women's immigration status.However, the women told the newspaper that at least two supervisors at the club were aware and took steps to help them avoid detection and hold on to their jobs.Diaz claimed to The Times that "there are many people without papers" and said she had witnessed several others hired though they were also undocumented.The attorney for the two women accused their supervisor at Bedminster of not only knowing about their undocumented status but also abusing them and threatening to have them deported."While working at Donald Trump's estate in Bedminster and interacting with the President and his immediate family, my clients and others were repeatedly subjected to abuse, called racial epithets and threatened with deportation," said Anibal Romero in a statement Thursday."Ironically, the threats often came from the same supervisor who had employed them despite knowing their undocumented status and even provided them with forged documents," she added. "This toxic environment was designed to intimidate these women, leaving them fearful for their safety and the safety of their families."Morales told The Times that she understood she could be fired or deported by going public with her story. According to the Times, Morales has applied for protection under asylum laws and is exploring a lawsuit claiming workplace abuse and discrimination. She also claimed to the newspaper that a housekeeping supervisor at Bedminster made insulting comments about her intelligence and undocumented status.The Trump Organization "did not comment specifically" on Morales or Diaz when asked by the Times.Trump's campaign was buoyed by his harsh stance on illegal immigration and promises of a border wall paid for by Mexico. But with COVID-19 still a concern, families all over the United States are wondering if it's safe to go trick-or-treating this year.WFTS took those concerns to medical experts with Baycare Health, who say with some added safety precautions, your family can still take part in trick-or-treating, handing out candy and other Halloween festivities.If you plan to welcome trick-or-treaters to your home, instead of handing out candy at your door, consider arranging individual treat bags on a table in your driveway or near the front door for a contact-less hand-off."Instead of having it all in a bucket, where everyone is putting their hands in, lay out a row so that when they come up, they can just grab one and go," said Michelle Sterling, the children's wellness and safety specialist with St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital. "Then, you can refill that row after the little trick-or-treaters leave your house."When it comes to going home-to-home for trick-or-treating, Sterling said be sure to wear a mask when around people who are not part of your household.Also, doctors say Halloween costume masks are not a substitute for a cloth mask unless it is made of two or more layers of fabric and fits snugly around your mouth and nose.Additionally, medical experts say wearing a costume mask over a protective cloth mask can make it difficult to breathe. Instead, they say to consider using a Halloween-themed cloth mask.Doctors also recommend keeping a physical distance of at least six feet from people who are not in your immediate household, using hand sanitizer often, and waiting to eat candy until you are at home and can wash your hands with soap and water.Keep in mind though, updated safety guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention discourages families from taking part in traditional trick-or-treating.Sterling is also offering the following tricks for keeping Halloween a treat for your family during the pandemic:Go all out with the Halloween decorations. Keep it budget-friendly by having your kids help create decorations to hang from windows, trees, mailbox, etc. You could even turn one of your bedrooms into a kid-friendly haunted house.Decorate doors inside your house and let your little ones go trick-or-treating indoors. Get the whole family involved with mom or dad behind one door, an older sibling behind another and grandparents behind yet another door.Set up a Halloween-themed scavenger hunt in and around your house. Provide clues and leave treats along the route.Turn up your spooky Halloween music and have a dance party with your children. White House senior adviser Jared Kushner called for unity Monday at the opening of the United States' new embassy in Jerusalem, according to excerpts of his speech released by the White House."We believe, it is possible for both sides to gain more than they give -- so that all people can live in peace -- safe from danger, free from fear, and able to pursue their dreams."Jerusalem must remain a city that brings people of all faiths together," Kushner said.The senior adviser's speech comes after at least 41 people were killed during clashes earlier in the day along the border fence between Israel and Gaza, the most fatalities suffered in a single day since the latest round of demonstrations began more than six weeks ago.Kushner also praised to praise President Donald Trump's efforts to move the US embassy to Jerusalem."While presidents before him have backed down from their pledge to move the American Embassy once they were in office, this President delivered.
