SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — The California Senate has voted to expand job protections to more people who take time off to care for a family member. State law allows workers to take up to 12 weeks of leave to care for a family member. But the law only protects the jobs of people who work at companies with at least 50 employees. The Senate voted 21-12 on Thursday to expand those protections to companies with at least five employees. Republicans and some moderate Democrats opposed the bill. They argued it was too hard for small businesses to find short-term replacements for employees. 594

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — New York Attorney General Letitia James is promising to expedite the release of body camera footage in cases of alleged police misconduct that her office investigates. James spoke Sunday in Rochester, which has been in turmoil since the footage of Daniel Prude’s fatal encounter with police was released more than five months after his death. James said her office “will be proactively releasing footage to the public on our own.” It's unclear how many cases will be affected by the policy, since the attorney general’s office does not review all footage of police interactions with the public. 620

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Those body-length receipts from retail stores are here to stay. The California Legislature had been considering banning paper receipts unless requested by a customer. But a legislative committee voted Friday not to send the legislation to the Senate floor for a vote. The move means the bill is unlikely to pass this year.RELATED: Solana Beach moves closer to banning single-use plastic items within city limitsDemocratic Assemblyman Phil Ting had criticized the receipts for harming the environment. An aide dressed as a giant receipt stood beside Ting as he announced the bill at a news conference earlier this year, emphasizing the often absurd lengths of modern receipts.Senate Appropriations Committee chairman Anthony Portantino said the bill did not get out of committee because it had some problems. He said paper receipts have other uses, such as offering coupons to consumers. 918

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom says his children are among those resuming in-person classes after months of distance learning due to the coronavirus pandemic. Newsom says he believes children learn best in the classroom and his administration will support districts with personal protective gear and testing resources so they can safely reopen. Newsom has four children in private school. His administration has approved more than 1,200 requests for waivers to allow for in-person education for elementary school students in counties where coronavirus cases remain widespread. Schools in counties where cases have declined below state-mandated thresholds can broadly reopen. 706
