SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County's unadjusted unemployment rate dipped to 3.5 percent in February, with both farm and nonfarm employment showing gains, the California Employment Development Department announced Friday.The county's adjusted unemployment rate sat at 3.8 percent in January, its highest point since the third quarter of 2017. February's unadjusted rate is the same as its revised 2018 unemployment rate, according to the EDD.Nonfarm industries added 9,700 jobs between January and February, with total nonfarm employment increasing from 1,480,100 to 1,489,800. Total farm jobs increased by 400 from 8,100 in January to 8,500 last month.Multiple nonfarm industries showed job gains in the thousands. The professional and business services industry increased by 4,100 jobs, the most of any industry in the county. The trade, transportation and utilities industry decreased the most of any in the county, falling by 2,600 jobs.Year-over-year nonfarm employment increased by 19,900 jobs, from 1,469,900 in February 2018 to 1,489,800 last month. The educational and health services industry showed the largest year-over-year employment gains at 6,900, pacing multiple industries that showed yearly job gains of more than 3,000.Like the county's month-over-month job market, the trade, transportation and utilities industry had the largest year-over-year decrease in job numbers, falling by the same number of jobs from 223,600 in February 2018 to 221,000 last month. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council rejected an emergency ordinance Tuesday that would have banned motorized scooters on boardwalks in Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, Mission Bay and La Jolla.  State law already bans motorized scooters from sidewalks but doesn't mention boardwalks.   The vehicles have become increasingly common in San Diego since they were introduced in February by scooter-sharing companies Bird and LimeBike. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police searched Thursday for a hit-and-run driver who ran a red light at a Mission Valley intersection and slammed into another car, seriously injuring it's 60-year-old driver.The crash was reported shortly before 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Friars and Frazee roads, San Diego police Officer Robert Heims said.A 60-year-old woman was driving a 2007 Lexus sedan southbound on Frazee Road when a man driving a blue Ford pickup truck westbound on Friars Road ran a red light at Frazee and crashed into the driver's side of the Lexus, Heims said.The pickup driver kept driving, then pulled over a short distance away before he got out and ran away, the officer said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police sought public help Tuesday to identify a pair of suspects who robbed two San Diego State University Students at gunpoint just blocks from campus.The students were walking about 1:35 a.m. Monday at Campanile Drive and Dorothy Drive when two men approached and demanded their belongings, according to the SDSU Police Department. One of the suspects was armed with a handgun.The victims complied with the demands and were not injured, according to police, who said the suspects fled in a white, four-door car heading north on Campanile Drive toward Montezuma Road.Both suspects were described as roughly 170-pound black men, one about 5- foot-7 and the other about 5-foot-10. They both wore dark hooded sweatshirts, saggy pants and sneakers.The San Diego Police Department is investigating the robbery, but university police released information as part of a community safety notification.Anyone with information about the crime was asked to call the SDPD at (619) 531-2000. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The proposed .8 billion budget that San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer unveiled today includes the most infrastructure spending in city history, and prioritizes public safety, street repair and recreation centers, as well as initiatives to fight homelessness and illegal dumping.The spending blueprint also closes a million deficit without significant cuts to major programs, according to the mayor."We're continuing to put neighborhoods first by maintaining the key services we've restored in recent years," Faulconer said. "This balancedbudget will keep our foot on the pedal when it comes to fixing more roads, helping people into stable housing, keeping libraries and rec centers open for children, creating more housing affordability for working families and putting more police officers on the street to protect our communities."The budget proposal includes the largest recruitment and retention package in San Diego Police Department history, the equivalent of 390 miles of street repair and the highest level of library and rec center operating hours in a decade, according to the mayor's office.It also reserves 3 million for initiatives related to the Climate Action Plan, including 1 million to advance the Pure Water San Diego water recycling program.
