Both deputies are in critical condition, the department said.Video shows the suspect approaching the deputies from behind the vehicle before walking along the passenger side, raising a pistol, and opening on fire.The shooting also sparked a protest outside the hospital where the deputies were taken. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It was a chilly dilemma for a Pacific Beach restaurant: outdoor dining this winter without any patio heaters.The owners changed their outlook by appealing to their customers for help.After shutting down several times since the pandemic began, Break Point restaurant and bar, reopened in September. With the purple tier restrictions putting a halt to indoor dining, the owners turned to their new parklet to host their outdoor dining. But they had a problem."Keeping customers warm is a concern," said co-owner Amy Lee.Lee says when the winter temps arrive, they would need gas patio heaters to warm up customers, and they didn't have any."We found that they were pretty much sold out everywhere, and where they weren't sold out, prices were inflated to the point, that they were unaffordable," said Lee.One local supplier recently told ABC 10News they had a backlog of 200 orders.So Lee turned to social media, making an appeal for patio heaters on the Nextdoor app and community pages on Facebook.One of those appeals was seen by the Rynearson family. They had a backyard heater they hadn't used in awhile. Chance Rynearson, 14, says it was an easy call to lend the heater to Lee for as long as she needs it."COVID has really hit businesses hard. Just to help out is a good thing ... People should be helping each other during these times ... difficult but we should be able to get through it together," said Rynearson.In all, 17 people offered to either donate or lend a heater to Break Point, far more than Lee needed."It's like Christmas. It makes you wanna believe in Santa again ... It was that heartwarming," said Lee.Heartwarming and customer warming. Lee says this gives them a chance at survival this winter."I think it shows we should still have a lot of faith in our neighbors, in our community, and in humanity in general ... and that there's still a lot of good people out there. We are so grateful," said Lee.Lee says she offered many of the donors meals, but many didn't accept, saying that's 'not the reason' they wanted to help out. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Long wait times have always been a problem at the DMV, the way to avoid that was to make an appointment online to skip the long lines. For people needing to renew their license like Debby Herscovitz, they had to plans months in advance, “I went online, booked an appointment, but I had no idea it was going to be in March”. Herscovitz got a notification from the DMV in the mail to renew her license back in December and immediately tried to make an appointment. She tells us the first available time slot was at the end of March, “I absolutely had no idea it was going to take that long”. A DMV representative tells 10News, drivers are trying to avoid the hours long line at the DMV by making an appointment online. Because so many people are scheduling appointments, the appointments are filling up faster than ever before. For Herscovitz, her appointment would have taken a total of 15 minutes to get her Real ID, however she didn’t have all the necessary documents. The DMV tells 10News to help people adjust to the new requirements and be prepared for their appointments they have a video people can watch before they make the trip in. Despite having to plan months in advance, the DMV says it’s still the best idea to schedule an appointment online before heading to a nearby office. Tips to keep in mind that could help with the scheduling process: don’t rule out nearby offices because some might not be as busy as others. Also, continue to check back online to see if any cancellations were made. Here in San Diego, there are also a few offices with extended hours and that are open on Saturdays. The Chula Vista DMV opens an hour earlier on certain days of the week. Poway, San Marcos, Chula Vista and Clairemont have Saturday appointments available. 1788

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Iconic TV host Regis Philbin, who has roots in San Diego television history, has died at the age of 88, multiple news outlets report.According to a family statement obtained by PEOPLE, Philbin passed away from natural causes Friday night.Philbin returned to his roots in 2018 with a visit to 10News.After a stint in the United States Navy, he moved to San Diego where he launched a career in broadcast. The icon was briefly a news anchor in San Diego when Channel 10, at the time known as KOGO, approached him about taking over as an anchor of the evening news.PHOTOS: Former 10News anchor Regis Philbin visits the 10News crew"This was the beginning of it all," Philbin said upon beginning his tour. "It really was."Shortly after, Philbin landed his first talk show, "The Regis Philbin Show," which was filmed in the ABC 10News studios where the current newscasts are produced.Philbin acted as his own writer, producer, and show guest booker. He was able to book many top celebrities including Jerry Lewis, Ronald Reagan, Danny Thomas, and Liberace.His talk show, which was produced at the now KGTV studios from 1961 to 1965, aired live from 11:30 p.m. - 1:00 a.m. every Saturday night."The show became a big hit so it was time to go to Hollywood, I guess, so I did," said Philbin.Philbin moved his show to Los Angeles, before being hired in 1967 as the sidekick for a national talk show, "The Joey Bishop Show." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Local family members are reacting to the news that the bodies of two San Diegans who went missing in Mexico have reportedly been found in a well in Baja, California.According to the Associated Press, the Baja California state prosecutor’s office said in a statement that 78-year-old Ian Hirschsohn and 73-year-old Kathy Harvey were discovered in a well, south of Ensenada, Mexico.On Tuesday, the U.S. State Department sent ABC10 News the following statement: “The U.S. Department of State's top priority is the safety and security of U.S. citizens. We are aware of reports that local authorities have discovered the remains of two people near San Quintin and are closely monitoring their ongoing investigation.”On Tuesday, ABC10 News spoke to Hirschsohn's son-in-law over the phone. He said that family members are not yet ready to go on-camera but they want viewers to know what a senseless tragedy this is. They’re trying to accept the reality that Hirschsohn and Harvey may have been murdered but they’re yet entirely convinced that the bodies found are those of the retired couple. However, San Diego Police confirmed Tuesday that positive identification was made.“He went to Mexico a lot. I'd say he went down at least every couple of months,” Hirschsohn’s Solana Beach neighbor and friend Jim Dietz told ABC10 News on Tuesday. He described Hirschsohn has a highly-intelligent, active and well-traveled man. Those words were echoed by his son-in-law.“He was a real gentleman. He wouldn't say an unkind word about anybody,” said Dietz who added, “I feel very bad for [his kids] because they lost their mother a few years ago and now they lose their father in this kind of a tragic way.
